I've also propagated comfrey with about a 90% success rate from flower stem cuttings! Each piece about 2 inches, planted vertically with the "up" end "up", half in and half out of the soil.
I like doing this during bolting season, because I'm hacking back the flower stalks anyway. 😊

Love all your videos...I place armloads of leaves between rows to keep down weeds and get the deep minerals you mentioned into the soil as it decays and dries...but one can easily get a comfrey farm as you can never dig it up entirely and move it.... One grower told me the roots can go down 30 feet so make sure you plant it only where you're sure you want it forever.....it is an amazing healing plant as allantoin makes skin cells regenerate FAST. in poultises and salves as you mentioned.

I've used comfrey tea for years. I also chop and drop it as mulch. I use Russian Bocking 14 with an NPK of 1.8-0.5-7.0. I brew it in a 32 gallon black garbage can. Let it sit for 3 months to a year. I don't strain it, I just take the sprinkler off the can so I don't clog up the cans. I also use fermented plant juice made from comfrey which I foliar spray. I use only 1/4 teaspoon for 5 gallons. It's very powerful stuff. I also make lacto microorganisms which is also fermented. I combine it with the fermented plant juice and spray it every two weeks. It works pretty well. The only other addition I use for supplemental fertilization is some fast acting bone meal . I will use it when I start to see flowers forming on my tomatoes and peppers. Love it! Blessings to you. This was a wonderful video.

Another great video, thank you. I have planted comfrey around all of my fruit trees here in NZ and have had great success simply dividing the plants as you have shown. Entertaining and informative video. Thanks. I grow comfrey and I'm impressed both by its prolific production and the amount of (laboratory analyzed) nutrients deliver in the foliage. However, I'm not convinced that making and applying comfrey tea adds anything of value to my garden. But the extra effort does no harm. I get at least five "crops" a year to add as a mulch and addition to my compost. That's the bit value to me as comfrey seems to be quite prolific in my semi-desert type of soil. Cheers and thanks again for posting.

Thank you so much. I have several five foot tall comfrey mounds. Twice each summer it grows so high that the wind blows it out in a circle. I cut it at the ground level and within a week it starts over. I have given lots of it to friend but have never really understood how to handle it. Last year I kept it up with stakes and rope but felt that was no solution to keeping it safe till I could figure out what to do with it. I've known for decades how wonderful it could be but just didn't know what to do. [always have too many projects going on]. I heard it made good compost, I've known for decades that it made a good salve [which is why I was so glad to receive some from a friend so many years ago]. I love to look at the healthy leaves and flowers. Somewhere I read that it was toxic to eat or drink so I settled for just enjoying how it looked and grew. I'm am so thrilled to find your video. I will follow you directions and search for more of your videos. THANK YOU SO MUCH. And I too am amazed at your bare feet. How brave you are. I have chickens and although I clean up after them CONSTANTLY, I still would not be brave enough to walk barefoot. I have a jungle of weeds that I am sure could be useful and delicious but have yet to learn them all. I will watch all of your videos.

A friend of mine had a wrenched shoulder which she was told would take weeks to heal, I suggested she research comfrey as a treatment and I gave her some bruised comfrey to use as a poultice, she may have left it on too long though as she got a burning rash (she has very pale, sensitive skin), the rash cleared up quickly after removing the poultice and rinsing it, and the pain was gone the next morning. She also suffers from varicose veins which are quite pronounced and had erupted with excema which was very sore and she had suffered with for years despite severel courses of steroids which didn’t agree with her, she tried the poultice on the veins and excema and within a couple of days both had almost completely disappeared. She was amazed and so was I. I am now in the process of making some comfrey salve as it is a lot less messy and more convenient than the poultice.

Wow! I have similar issues - torn rotor cuff (cup?) and my fiancee and I both have eczema. Do we just put the leaves on our eczema? Or make a salve? Perhaps I ll order that as I don't have comfrey in my garden yet.

Barbi Button Yes gather up the leaves in a bunch, maybe fold them and smash or bruise them with the back of a heavy knife on a board, then place them on the affected area. Or you can fold them between a cotton sheet or muslin to hold it all together and apply. It is quite messy so you can put a plastic bag or cling film over it and secure with a bandage. You can also put the made up poultice in the freezer. Try a test patch first and let us know how you got on.

Hello Morag thank you for sharing your experience.
I have an edible forest and I planted comfrey under some of my fruit trees.
I love the plant and use it 3 ways. In order of favorite use - chop and drop, comfrey tea, composting. I am also going to try making a salve.
I am starting to worry they are taking over some of my garden space as I keep finding little baby plants here and there where I have done chop and drop from the previous season.
I have a few questions I hope you can answer for me.
When you chop and drop the plant have you experienced it rooting from doing this. I feel like it has done this to me a few times. I love the idea of chop and drop and want to continue to do so but I don't want it sprouting everywhere.
I have 6 or 7 very well established plants and I don't need any more for what I use them for.
3 of them are a Russian variety but not sterile and I always chop these ones down before they flower as I know the seeds can sprout new plants. The others are a bocking 14 variety, but since seeing new plants pop up over the years I have begun practicing the same strategy as the others by cutting them down before the flowers, or if they do flower, I cut them down and make sure the seed heads all go into a batch of comfrey tea.
I can't tell if they are sprouting new plants from the seeds or just rooting from leaf and stem residues. What is your experience with this?
Should I be concerned about composting the seeds and them sprouting once the compost is applied to my gardens?
I have been thinking about letting the plant rot down in a barrel (batch of tea) over a growing season then adding to my compost pile to be extra safe with the seeds, will the seeds still sprout after rotting in the barrel?
Will the seeds die in the compost at a certain temperature if so how hot and for how long does the compost need to be?
I love the idea and use of this powerful plant, but I want to keep it under control. It is so prolific!
Thanks again for sharing all of your knowledge.
Hope you can help me on my comfrey journey.
    Greetings from Ontario, Canada.
    Happy gardening!

I wonder if you have a bit of the root on the end of the leaves that you spread around. If you pull the leaves out this could happen - best to cut

Seeds best put into the liquid fertiliser rather than try in compost - although the decomposed sludge from the bottom of the liquid fertiliser bucket can be added to your compost
