But it is traditional! A lot of songwriters today aren't working from a living tradition. The Johns are, and the fact they haven't died yet doesn't change that.
I had the exact same experience with Four Hours. They're brilliant artists, but I can usually distinguish between your traditional, centuries old shanties and folk songs and their originals. But Four Hours completely flew under my radar for months. RIP Josh, you beautiful man.
Imagine if Olympic had been made into a museum ship instead of being torn down. Imagine how many people would come to see her. I know I would. I love the Olympic class ocean liners. They are so beautiful
She would be the prize exhibit of the Belfast Titanic museum and visitors would flock to her by the thousands if not millions every year. The trade from performing weddings on her bow alone would net the city a tidy profit.
Well, before she was scrapped, there were actually plans to turn her into a floating hotel in France, but it never came into fruition. Which if you ask me is a good thing because ww2 was a few years away

a song about olympic i did nearly cry one of the most famous and beloved ocean liner of her time finally being shown some of respect she deserved but weve only forgotten in the times
@@thelongestjohns I've loved this song ever since you guys released the video of you singing it on a set of stairs, and immediately decided to listen to it a bunch more times so I could memorize it. You guys are awesome and I can't wait to hear more.
It's a really wonderful song and my grandson was singing it at the top of his voice during his "nap" last week. We let him carry on instead of chiding him to nap, since he has such great taste in music.
Well done lads! Love that each of you has a stanza. Great song Robbie! These Made Of Ale Sessions are such a joy to listen to. My wife & I are in our late 70’s so we can’t stand on our feet that long to see your Seattle concert so these RUclips videos are our only contact for your wonderful harmonies.

Gerry I second Kobayashi, contact the venue and ask about their disability access. You might not me disabled but they may allow you and the wife to use the accessible seating. I do hope you can get to experience TLJ live, their RUclips and albums are great but live is just at another level!
Got this on loop preparing for when we have breakfast in the Olympic's dining room, re-constructed in an Alnwick hotel from materials salvaged from the Jarrow yard where she was scrapped.
I love this! What a wonderful tribute to Olympic and her sisters, and the other dozens of ships owned and managed by the White Star Line until their downfall in 1935 with the Cunard merger. Thank you!
I really love being a Titanic nerd, beacuse through this obsession I got to other ships and Masterpieces like this one. This is the first RMS Olympic song I have seen, amazing Job! I will be sure to check out your other songs.
I just realized what ship you're singing about! Learned her story recently, and considering I hadn't heard of her until recently, it's fair to assume that the press prefers a "good" tragedy
This has to be by far my favorite song that was ever performed by The Longest Johns. I first saw the title thinking it was about the Titanic, though it was a very pleasant surprise to see that it was actually telling the story of one of her sister ships, the Olympic. Great work, guys!
Two things: one that sounds amazing! I would totally support that endeavor. And two… Is your user name from Bismarck by Sabaton? If not, you should probably check that song out. Warning that it’s Heavy Rock/Metal, nothing like the Johns Herr, but still epic.

One of my all time favourite songs of yours, Johns! The final chord progression, so crunchy and interesting, just to end with that perfect, satisfying resolution- Gives me such chills! Thank you so much for the amazing music you bring! :)
I just discovered this yesterday, and it's a damned good song. I've been fascinated by Titanic and the rest of the White Star liners since I was a little kid, so I have to nitpick just one thing. Olympic never sailed from Portsmouth, but rather Southampton, along with all of the other White Star liners on the transatlantic run.
This got stuck in my head around the time you first sang it on stream, and I was singing it while filling my freshly cleaned water bottle then I,,, dropped it and water spilled everywhere and I had to clean everything up (including the bottle again). But the song is so good I just kept singing before/during/after fixing my disastrous mistake. ANyway I sing this whenever I mess up now. Good stuff good stuff

They are truly great songwriters. If you do a little more digging, you'll find that they have at least one original song on every album of theirs.
But it is traditional!
A lot of songwriters today aren't working from a living tradition. The Johns are, and the fact they haven't died yet doesn't change that.

@@thefidgetspinner2007 That may be true

@@Bald_Cat2007 Very true
When I first heard this, I assumed it would be about the Titanic. Boy was I pleasantly surprised (and I might have cried like a baby)
I suspect that's the intent of the title.
It is about the Titanic. Olympic sank in her place after their names were swapped.
@@MrRicehard What? There’s no good evidence for this claim.
@@MrRicehard No

I remember JD saying (in either a steam or at the album launch) that people would still be singing in 100 years. He's right! Adequate!
Lyrics :
In the Belfast yard where she was made of Harland-Wolff design
The plan was struck to build three ships that funds would not define
The gantry raised up in '08, a nameless liner rose
To make the journeys to New York in record time and so
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Olympic soon became her stamp, no finer ship did sail
Smoking rooms and Turkish baths and palm trees rail to rail
As sleek and striking as could be, and speed second to none
She sailed from Portsmouth Dock and showed the world how it was done
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
The Hawke was running 'long her side around the Isle of Wight
A swing to starboard up and took the helmsman by surprise
Two holes were punched into her side and water flooded in
She staggered back to Portsmouth Dock and lived to sail again
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Titanic sank into the depths, Britannic joined her too
Through the wars, Olympic kept on sailing sure and true
Missions out in open sea with U-boats in her stead
Damn near cut them clean in two and sank them to the bed
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Now, every dog must have its day and all good things must pass
Shipyards forged much bigger crafts that dwarfed her in her class
The trips were few and fares declined, the world marched on ahead
They pulled her down in Jarrow town, still striking to 'til end
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Thanks for your work. 😊
Olympic getting the respect she deserves and not forgotten
