Olympic getting the respect she deserves and not forgotten
When I first heard it I assumed it was a classic, so I searched up the lyrics so I could sing along, let me tell you all the surprise, the instant respect and admiration I gained for you guys, keep doing what you're doing lads. You'll go far.
Ok
They are truly great songwriters. If you do a little more digging, you'll find that they have at least one original song on every album of theirs.
But it is traditional!
A lot of songwriters today aren't working from a living tradition. The Johns are, and the fact they haven't died yet doesn't change that.
I had the exact same experience with Four Hours. They're brilliant artists, but I can usually distinguish between your traditional, centuries old shanties and folk songs and their originals. But Four Hours completely flew under my radar for months. RIP Josh, you beautiful man.
RIP Josh?
Imagine if Olympic had been made into a museum ship instead of being torn down. Imagine how many people would come to see her. I know I would. I love the Olympic class ocean liners. They are so beautiful
She would be the prize exhibit of the Belfast Titanic museum and visitors would flock to her by the thousands if not millions every year. The trade from performing weddings on her bow alone would net the city a tidy profit.
I get the feeling if she didn’t get scrapped then they’d have tried to destroy her in WW2 unless they parked her in a neutral country
@@thefidgetspinner2007 That may be true
Well, before she was scrapped, there were actually plans to turn her into a floating hotel in France, but it never came into fruition. Which if you ask me is a good thing because ww2 was a few years away
@@Bald_Cat2007 Very true
it's been two years and yet no one has left a thumbs down. Shows how loved this one is. (Don't be the guy who does leave a thumbs down because i said this)
RUclips no longer has thumbs down
@@samuellawrencesbookclub8250 You can bring it back with a google extension!
Lyrics :
In the Belfast yard where she was made of Harland-Wolff design
The plan was struck to build three ships that funds would not define
The gantry raised up in '08, a nameless liner rose
To make the journeys to New York in record time and so
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Olympic soon became her stamp, no finer ship did sail
Smoking rooms and Turkish baths and palm trees rail to rail
As sleek and striking as could be, and speed second to none
She sailed from Portsmouth Dock and showed the world how it was done
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
The Hawke was running 'long her side around the Isle of Wight
A swing to starboard up and took the helmsman by surprise
Two holes were punched into her side and water flooded in
She staggered back to Portsmouth Dock and lived to sail again
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Titanic sank into the depths, Britannic joined her too
Through the wars, Olympic kept on sailing sure and true
Missions out in open sea with U-boats in her stead
Damn near cut them clean in two and sank them to the bed
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Now, every dog must have its day and all good things must pass
Shipyards forged much bigger crafts that dwarfed her in her class
The trips were few and fares declined, the world marched on ahead
They pulled her down in Jarrow town, still striking to 'til end
She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
She'll run for decades more
Thanks for your work. 😊
When I first heard this, I assumed it would be about the Titanic. Boy was I pleasantly surprised (and I might have cried like a baby)
I suspect that's the intent of the title.
It is about the Titanic. Olympic sank in her place after their names were swapped.
@@MrRicehard What? There’s no good evidence for this claim.
@@MrRicehard No
@@MrRicehard It literally doesn't matter if the "names were swapped" during construction because it was ultimately entered into the shipping register as RMS Titanic; and thus, it was RMS Titanic that sank that cold night in April, 1912.
Wow! My Great Grandfather immigrated to the US from Russia (Ukraine actually) and arrived at Ellis Island aboard the Olympic in 1911. Didn't know there was a song about her.
There wasn't. They wrote it :)
@@Krageesh Well, cool. There is one now, and it is amazing that it is about that ship ;)
They made sure it had a song
Wow, that’s super early in her career too! He would have been one for the comparative few to see her before her post-Titanic disaster upgrades
I'm not sure how much you know about Olympic but if you don't know much you should have a look, that ship had one hell of a legacy!
a song about olympic i did nearly cry one of the most famous and beloved ocean liner of her time finally being shown some of respect she deserved but weve only forgotten in the times
Olympic is the most forgotten of her sisters
the Most successful sibling is often forgotten when it comes to the other 2 of her class sinking but what can you do@@MasterBritannicJess
I remember JD saying (in either a steam or at the album launch) that people would still be singing in 100 years. He's right! Adequate!
THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY 0 BAD SONGS. THEY'RE ALL MASTERPIECES.
Agreed
SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!!
I was born on December 16th 1990. On December 16th 1908, the RMS Olympic's keel was laid in Belfast. This song fills me with great pride to share dates with this vessel. I will play it on every birthday going forward.
Hearing this while studying is actually a vibe, another special song on heart.
Wonderful to hear, thank you
My Great Grandad served on the Olymic. Thank you so much for this 😊🙏
I never though much about the Olympic until this song, and now I'm really proud of her. Very nice!
Coming from a ship building family this just makes my hair stand on end. Beautiful.
Great song to belt out on a bike ride, while cooking, cleaning up, working... Probably best that I don't sing in my sleep.
You never know… :)
@@thelongestjohns I've loved this song ever since you guys released the video of you singing it on a set of stairs, and immediately decided to listen to it a bunch more times so I could memorize it. You guys are awesome and I can't wait to hear more.
I've sung some of The Longest Johns' songs with a few buddies from my choir. Still really want to do this one. (-:
It's a really wonderful song and my grandson was singing it at the top of his voice during his "nap" last week. We let him carry on instead of chiding him to nap, since he has such great taste in music.
This is one of my favorites so far! Something about the raw performance makes it super magical. Perfect is an understatement. Wind in your sails!
Thanks so much mate :)
I really love being a Titanic nerd, beacuse through this obsession I got to other ships and Masterpieces like this one. This is the first RMS Olympic song I have seen, amazing Job! I will be sure to check out your other songs.
I love this! What a wonderful tribute to Olympic and her sisters, and the other dozens of ships owned and managed by the White Star Line until their downfall in 1935 with the Cunard merger. Thank you!
I just love the harmonies of that closing chorus (along with the rest of the song).
Got this on loop preparing for when we have breakfast in the Olympic's dining room, re-constructed in an Alnwick hotel from materials salvaged from the Jarrow yard where she was scrapped.
Well done lads! Love that each of you has a stanza. Great song Robbie! These Made Of Ale Sessions are such a joy to listen to. My wife & I are in our late 70’s so we can’t stand on our feet that long to see your Seattle concert so these RUclips videos are our only contact for your wonderful harmonies.
If you haven't already, Gerry, maybe try and call the venue? Most places I've been to are able to make some basic accommodations. You might not be front and center but I'm sure they could set you up with some chairs somewhere! Everyone should be able to enjoy awesome live music if they so wish!
Gerry I second Kobayashi, contact the venue and ask about their disability access. You might not me disabled but they may allow you and the wife to use the accessible seating. I do hope you can get to experience TLJ live, their RUclips and albums are great but live is just at another level!
A sea shanty about my favourite oceanliner! That's awesome!
I will never get sick of this band
This has to be by far my favorite song that was ever performed by The Longest Johns. I first saw the title thinking it was about the Titanic, though it was a very pleasant surprise to see that it was actually telling the story of one of her sister ships, the Olympic. Great work, guys!
Beautiful song for such a pretty ship
You lads are fantastic, my missis introduced me to your music last year, took a little getting used to but now I can't stop listening, up there with steeleye span and maddy prior as the greatest in British folk music
Im homesick for a ship that was destroyed before i was even born
RMS Olympic... My all-time favourite ❤️❤️❤️
I love this song, it's beautifully crafted and the story it tells is great! One of the highlights on an excellent album!
Hallo Jungs
Wieder ein Song von euch grossartig performt
Vielen Dank für dafür
Viele Grüße Frank
I got goosebumps during JDs verse and they didn't go away the rest of the song. That ending is great. Nice one lads 💪🏻
This has to be my favourite song that you guys have done. I go around the house singing this one all the time.
Lovely, supremely adequate ❤️
I'll never stop listening you guys, y'all have revitalized the community of us shanty lovers and that alone has earned my eternal respect.
I just realized what ship you're singing about! Learned her story recently, and considering I hadn't heard of her until recently, it's fair to assume that the press prefers a "good" tragedy
Fist thing I'm doing when time travel is invented is make the Olympic a museum ship.
Two things: one that sounds amazing! I would totally support that endeavor. And two… Is your user name from Bismarck by Sabaton? If not, you should probably check that song out. Warning that it’s Heavy Rock/Metal, nothing like the Johns Herr, but still epic.
@@bwaychick20 it's most definitely from Sabaton Bismarck
One of my favorite songs on Smoke and Oakum!
I've listened to this song the first time, and now I can't stop listen. This song is a masterpiece
Finest ship ever to sail!
Sleek and striking as could be.
This kind of thing gives us hope for the art of shanty going forward. You’re excellent songwriters and performers alike!
One of my all time favourite songs of yours, Johns! The final chord progression, so crunchy and interesting, just to end with that perfect, satisfying resolution- Gives me such chills! Thank you so much for the amazing music you bring! :)
This got stuck in my head around the time you first sang it on stream, and I was singing it while filling my freshly cleaned water bottle then I,,, dropped it and water spilled everywhere and I had to clean everything up (including the bottle again). But the song is so good I just kept singing before/during/after fixing my disastrous mistake. ANyway I sing this whenever I mess up now. Good stuff good stuff
Wonderfully adequate, chaps!
Coming to see you in Broadstairs 😎
Man I moved on from Sea shanties a while ago but I don't think I'll ever move on from you guys, keep it up 👍
So glad I found you guys, your music is a staple in this house. ❤️🏴☠️
❤️
My grandfather emigrated on the ship that picked up survivors from the Titanic; he never spoke of it and we learned about it after his death, so we never got to ask him about it.
The Made of Ale sessions have been extremely adequate renditions of your songs, long may they continue!
May literally be my favourite song you guys have done so far
My favorite original song!
brilliant song, the video production was great too
I just discovered this yesterday, and it's a damned good song. I've been fascinated by Titanic and the rest of the White Star liners since I was a little kid, so I have to nitpick just one thing. Olympic never sailed from Portsmouth, but rather Southampton, along with all of the other White Star liners on the transatlantic run.
Great song, great harmonies.
I'm excited for the Dallas TX date later this year. Sure to be a good time!
Can’t wait! :D
Longest John’s song amazing as always
This is such a beautifully uplifting song, a very quick favourite! ❤️❤️
The harmonies are so good in this one
From one Robbie to another, well done. And I now must find you to take your power.
i heard portsmouth get mentioned and knew i would love the song lol. great job lads!
I love this song ^^
I missed the premier but this is great… much love 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This takes me back to a glorious Sunday at Croissant Neuf! I was so glad to catch you guys at Glastonbury, honestly the highlight of my weekend
Wow, this is... genuinely beautiful. Hell of a job, guys!
I can't wait to play this song while sailing the seas in SOT
I'm delighted that you look so normal again. :) My favourite Johns.
Lovely blending!
Love the harmonies on this one and the recording here is so crisp! Super-adequate!
love it
My wife surprised me with tickets to see you guys in Tucson in November. Needless to say I am excited!
I think we should have another Olympic class liners the classic 3 again with a peice of the the old ships to hold the honor of the old ships
Loved this one!
I just caught the big coof, and I am kinda roughing jt in quarantine right now. But you're music makes me feel super happy and makes me wanna keep fighting the sicknes. You guys are super awesome and I wish you the best of luck. Especially Dave with the whole Bristol Flu thing.
I was lookin for sturgill's 'long white line' and came across this❤😮
Firmly adequate as usual! Love those harmonies, and this one's going right in the shanties playlist. Let's hope I can catch yall next time a tour hits the states!
Check gigs October/November this year
This has to be the next group project!
This song is so great
Sounds great
1483 likes and not a single dislike. Faith in humanity slightly restored.
I know this tune as the sick note, i have to wonder what the genesis is, great lyrics
hey this is a good song
Thank you :)
Adequately adequate 😄😄
This was so awesome!!
Beautiful as always, I'm just hoping one day you'll do a tour in Ohio so I can see you guys live
Wonderfully done lads, as ever :D
One day I will hear you sing, from a live concert. :)
I do hope that you managed it! They're an outstanding live show.
oof, chills
Nice
olympic is a very overlooked ocean liner
Just seen "sea beasts" on netflix, you lads have to cover "captain crow" it would be amazing!
Is no one doing to talk about the little okay symbol at 0:44, it's like they're saying good job my guy you hit that note just right
May TLJ run more than a decade more.
Only issue with the lyrics is that the Olympic class ships were never built for speed. The Olympic and Titanic were never close to setting the record time between South Hampton and New York.
Great song lads from someone the next town along from jarrow 😂
WHY!!, WHY DID WE HAVE TO SCARP HER AHHHHH 😭😭😭😭
Did you guys know about the ss nomadic it was also apart of the white star line
Wwo is cool
🔥🔥
I don't know if the last line "still striking till the end" references the time when she ram another one on her last voyage. Probably not.
👌🏻
👍
brilliant. finally seeing Olympic get the credit she deserved rather then being famous for sinking
Olympic didn't sink
@@pancytryna9378 he knows that, but he meant Olympic is being recognized for a good career rather than being famous for sinking like her sisters were
cant believe her sisters died from burger mine 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
(in truth i know it is berg and mine, but burger mine is funnier for me. Regardless, a damn great song. Adequate, dare I say.)
