- Edit: it can also be fun to plug in a noise TOP before the second input of the displace top for some extra line control.
Download the project files and more here.
I usually add some extra spice to the Patreon files.

Today we are using the techniques from the pointclouds tutorial and bringing it into a more abstract space. We are making a generative particle cloud from scratch and connect the points into a plexus-like pattern.

Incredible what you've shown us. Thank you so much
This is incredible, thank you so much for putting this together.. a labor of love fr.
Great tutorial and the music in the back also great choice! Thanks!
Love your tutorials 💎💎💎💎
Amazing! Thank you.
Very awesome!
thanks, this helps a lot in understanding TOP to 3D world :)
The voice reminds me of f*society's messages in Mr. Robot. Really gives the tutorial a lovely sinister and futuristic touch. Love that!
Awesome, thx 🤩
Thankkkk youuuu!!!!❤
Keep going bro ❤
Good stuff!
The audio filter makes it sound so mysterious...
My god very cool ! Thanks
thanks for tutorial
broo nice!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Is there an way to simply speed up movement of those particles in moment of noise seed change? The make them move faster in that particular moment of time ?
Not an easy way that I can think of. If you increase the multiplication on the math (after the noise in the feedback loop) the particles will move faster.
If you just want them to speed up only when the change happens you could get creative and connect a trigger chop (that creates a little adsr envelope) to the same button that triggers the change and use it to modulate the multiplication value (probably a very small amount). It’s difficult to describe in writing.
I really love the look you get at 10:52 but cannot seem to achieve this at all even from adjusting camera and all sorts of parameters - do you have any advice on how you achieved this effect with almost 2 floors and lines flowing in between? great tutorial thanks as ever
wow, you might get me to you TD again!
Hello :) This is super nice! Is it possible to apply motion tracking via webcam input so that the cloud adapts the person's body shape?
Great tutorial! Is it possible to make it hand tracked so that it creates points on my tacked data for example using Mediapipe? If yes then what would I need to change ?
Just started playing with that. I don’t have a good answer, but play around with it, and maybe I’ll return with a tut in the future.
Great tutorial thank you very much ! I'm new to this software but I can't figure out why, to about 5:50 to your tutorial, I can't reset the noise when I plug the over, is there a common problem to it because I can't find out ? Thank you again
It’s more of a sprinkler than a hard reset. It’s difficult to know what your problem is. Make sure that the multiply is plugged into the first input of the over TOP.
Quick question for the feedback loop at 3:11.
How did you come up with the ingenious idea of using the Noise in the Feedback TOP as the 2 Inputs of another Noise in a Feedback loop?
As far as I understand, using a Noise as the Coordinate Map of another Noise in a Feedback Loop would cause a completely chaotic system.
So the idea is, that the chaotic system is then multiplied by 0.02 and added to the particles to let them fly around randomly, right?
If so, HOW would you know that they converge to these beautiful lines?
Thank you very much for the tutorial its mesmerizing.
Think of a feedback loop as something happening every frame.
We are displacing the point position with a noise by a very small amount (0.002) every frame. Therefore, it doesn’t blow up into insanity. And the coordinate map input makes sure that the noise looks at the position from the previous frames before it displaces the noise again the next frame.
Also, Perlin and simplex noises are not completely “random” they are actually pretty structured. So the movement of the particle follow the “vector feild” described by the rgb-perlin noise.
But as an answer to how I came up with it, honestly, I just tried a bunch of ways until it looked cool, and the I tried to understand why it was pretty.
Feedback loops are usually important to create chaotic systems. And chaos is not the same as “disorder.” Chaos actually a pretty beautiful and organic system of organization. :)
Super cool! Only issue is at 8:00 when adding a displace. No line appears really. Only slight flickerings whever settin I am changing. Any idea? Thanks!
im getting this too, did you figure it out?
🤩
How could one add a kinect camera to this? I have been trying to make it interactive with a video device in, but it turns out "wrong" making a small square and choking fps. Hmmm :)
Nice tutorial!!
Try Udine the Kinect chop. I dont have a Kinect so I’m not sure how you’re thinking
Excellent tutorial! Learning to use TD with this one.
I encounter an issue when I put the constant over the geo, nothing happens, the geometry doesnt seem to be able to render ? on your video when you put the constant over the geo, a small white dot appears, but it doesnt on my end. How can I fix it ? Thank you !!!
I have the same issue.
make sure that in the addSOP "Add Points" is ON
heyy. i have a slight issue exporting the video through 'export movie' the null doesnt show thr particle view instead only the noise view. is there way to adjust the setting in the export so we can see the noise particles themselves?
Hey, yeah you can’t export a video like that. That’s why you need the instancing network that we start building at 8:50 in the video.
I am not getting lines when I plug the limit into the displace top, just a small sputtering shooting start looking thing. Any tips?
Thx a lot,
why do you have to recreate the cam at the very end? mine seems blocked sometimes, can't move it... especially if i deactivate autohommin in geo...
I don’t know, not sure how to fix it. Only fix I’ve found is replacing it :/ but I haven’t really looked into it.
@@supermarketsallad is it kind of a bug from TD? did you report it?
@attracteuretrange2543 I haven’t looked into it enough to know if it’s a bug. Could be, for example, if you press down a key when while in viewer active it locks the cam.. idk
But it might be a bug
Amazing tutorial but I have a problem at the very beginning. I press V at the null1 to see the noise in points and I see nothing just one point in the middle. What am I doing wrong?
I think you just forgot to turn monochrome off. So they all arrange in a line.
Or you didn’t set your resolution in the noise up properly.
Or maybe the amp of your noise is really small.
Does any of those fix your issue?
I tried everything you said but no still the same ..just one point in the center !@@supermarketsallad
could it be an issue of my GPU?
@@supermarketsallad
Thank you so much for this video!! I got a problem, When I add the displace everything just gets corrupted!! it doesn't work as yours
It’s difficult to say without seeing it. Try playing around with the values in the displace top and see what happens.
same problem, everything disappear@@supermarketsallad
Loving your tutorials! But on this one, every time I drag the fbend to feedback nothing happens. Could you help?
Hmm, I’m not sure. make sure the timeline is playing (at the bottom of the screen)
Otherwise, try rebuilding it
@@supermarketsallad thx!
same here nothing's happening, did you solve the problem @rising4787 ?
Okay forgot to turn the first noise to 32-bit float, in case somebody have the same issue
im also having this issue did you get it to work? timeline is playing, and i have the float set correctly the arrow with the little plus just refuses to show up
Beutiful
Can this be audio reactive?
So when I do what you say at 3:49 all my particles fly off and never come back. What did I do wrong?
Probably forgot to set the offset in the noise to zero
@@supermarketsallad no, that I did. any other option?
11:20 what command do u use?
can someone explain me at 7:25 why the 0 k2 change to 1 k2 ? im new on this software :)
Yeah, that’s a keyboard in Chop. So I’m using my keyboard to pressing down the 2 key. And then the chop gives a value of 0 if it’s not pressed down and 1 when I’m pressing it down.
@@supermarketsallad ohhh i understand ok thank you a lot!
pc dies when I try to render this but good stuff xD
Optimization is not my strength lol :) try decreasing the resolution
Do you know why i cant render the two geometries??
jajaja i figured it out Great tutorial by the way
Thank you! How did you figure it out. (In case someone else has the same problem)
@@supermarketsallad I had the display dot that is in the bottom of the box turned off
@@supermarketsallad I can't render the geometries but is not a problem of the display dot. I don't know what is it
how can i connect this to optical flow op?
Hmm.. I’ll think about it and get back to you. My first thought is to just add the optical flow output to the feedback loop (with an add top) and see what happens. I haven’t tried it though.
Thanks só muuuuch!
i cant wrap my head around as to why displacing it with itself draws the lines
Full disclosure.
Me neither. It just does lol.
I think it has to do with the linear interpolation that the displace top creates for the pixels that are “outside of frame”
But this is one of those “I wonder what happen an if I put down a displace top here” moments.
@@supermarketsallad i see. thanks for the reply
