I did something similar with a kid trailer.... it has neumatic tires, the last modification I did was a solid axle from wheel to wheel, a 1/2" black pipe is just about perfect, just to keep from the wheels from pulling apart under the frame. I kept the sides as well used a plastic bread rack as the base, its like your expanded metal but lighter.
@MakingNoise45 yes! I drilled the pipe so that the wheels go through the frame and into the pipe, so you have to line everything up, but it removed any doubt that it would stay together down the trail
@MakingNoise45 I used the trailer for a season, making upgrades as I went along finding the weak points.... my inlaws just bought me a quite kat two wheel trailer for Christmas, almost identical setup, but the quite kat has really nice fat tires and some suspension to absorb the bumps... I kinda like the bread rack on my old one though, because it had unlimited spots to tie things down. And I wasn't afraid of my stand chafing a hole in it

Can you still remove your wheels easily?
