- "Criticize" is a song written by Alexander O'Neal and Jellybean Johnson and recorded by American recording artist Alexander O'Neal. It was the second single from O'Neal's second solo album, Hearsay (1987). The song's distinctive backing vocals were performed by Lisa Keith. Following the successful chart performances of the Hearsay single "Fake", "Criticize" was released as the album's second single.
The song peaked at No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming his biggest hit in that region. In O'Neal's native United States, it peaked at No. 4 on the R&B chart, and No. 70 on the main Billboard Hot 100. It was also one of his only two hits to chart in the Republic of Ireland (reaching No. 14). - Shared for historical purposes. I do not own the rights.
Alexander O'Neal (born November 15, 1953) is an American R&B singer, songwriter and arranger from Natchez, Mississippi.
In a music career spanning more than 40 years, O'Neal is an accomplished R&B and soul singer. O'Neal came to prominence in the middle of the 1980s as a solo artist, releasing fourteen singles that entered the Top 40 charts in the US during the 1980s and 1990s. His solo singles, sometimes dealing with lost love include "If You Were Here Tonight", "Fake", "Criticize", "The Lovers", "(What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me", "The Christmas Song", "All True Man", "Love Makes No Sense" and "In the Middle". He is also known for duets with fellow R&B singer and Tabu labelmate Cherrelle such as "Saturday Love" and "Never Knew Love Like This". AllMusic has described O'Neal as having a "tough voice [that] has the same grain and range as that of Otis Redding." - Wikipedia

Imagine dancing in a night club in 1987 everyone on the dance floor having a good time to criticize.

Me too!
And I saw him at the Royal Albert Hall supported by The Pasadenas in April 91.
One of the best concerts of my life ever!
Alexander was on it back in those 80s! 'Aint nuthin but Hearsay'. Whoo!
💯💯💯💯💯💯
'Come here girlfriend....'
Why is it that so many Black American artists find so much appreciation and especially continued appreciation in the UK than in the U.S.? I believe Alexander O'Neal now lives full-time in the UK. Many of the better R&B/Soul websites are out of the UK.
I live in London. Its a fact. All the soul greats are treated like royalty when they come here for live engagements. Its been like that since the 60s.
@@bolder2009 Yes, I have to find out what many veteran Black American musicians are doing by through UK outlets. And, most of so-called Black radio in the U.S. doesn't play anything by these artists aside from their most well known songs. It's sickening and is part of the cultural rot that is unfortunately permeating a sizable segment of Black America.
@@kamala80 The oldest R&B magazine still in print is Blues & Soul, which is a UK publication. I believe in France there are two statues of Miles Davis. To my knowledge there isn't a statue of Miles in his home state. I hope I'm proven wrong. But think about all the Jazz documentaries, which are mostly filled with footage from European tours. Quincy has also spoken about the difference he experienced when he first went to France with his big band. Sad that the radio stations and personalities don't care about the rich history and tradition of black american music. Where are the black Giles Peterson's?! The less said about Hot 97 the better.
Chaka Khan lives there full time, too.

i miss the 90s
You are right but this was late 80s - He WAS BRILLIANT!
My husband was at this gig and he's still talking about it 33 years later!.
I would be too! ha
You can’t sit still to this - dance man Alex one of a kind.
He was one of the greatest male vocalists in the game back in the 1980s & early 1990s. Alcohol has severely effected his live performances today as seen recently on the Soul Train Awards.
Sad but true!! Heartbreaking!!! He has such an amazing voice!!!
He was one of the all time great soul singers. He sold out Wembley Stadium 6 nights in a row; unbelievable accomplishment.
@@haydnplaysgames I really believe if he cleans up, his voice will be preserved and his looks will return to favor the Alex of old. He is just 66 years old...still young and sounds good. RnB needs him.
It's not just alcohol. He had a huge coke addiction. He and Cherelle both had a battle with coke.
Yess and Cocaine
Excellent performance xx
Still the JAM!
This is on my playlist. LOVE IT!
this song is awesome to dance to takes me back to the 80s 👀yeah thanx 4this gr8 stuff 🇬🇧💯🔥🤘🎶🎸😜😁👀

Alexander O'Neal was the hottest shit out at one time.
I miss those days. The only black artist you hear now are rappers. Which is not my thing
Amen !! the R and B is so much better
Rappers with a capital 'C'
This single came out right after Bizarre Love Triangle and that free-floating ecstatic thing was SO similar I've never been able to separate them... its SUCH a gorgeous song, production and performance... absolutely thrilling!!!
Sold out the Wembley 3 nights straight. Bigger than Gillette stadium in Foxboro. Alex U.K.'s "Lord of bedroom soul". But to put it truthfully , Mr Avant " the black Godfather " picked Alex off the floor of his "sunken place" quite often.
What do you mean, "his sunken floor"
The best song and R&B funk album of the 80s!
Another Jellybean Johnson classic
So glad you put this up!!! Alexander O'Neal is one of my favorite singers of ALL TIME!!! Criticize is my favorite song from him!!! Though he has had his personal issues, he will always be a favorite of mine! Lisa Keith brought life to the Hook of the song!!! Long live Mr. Alexander O'Neal!
#LivingLegend....#AlexanderOneal..baddest band ever!

Love Alex this whole album was bad but this wasn't good here the band & backup carried this performance
The Criticize album and single was huge in the UK. Also they appreciate R&B music more than a lot of black Americans
My black best friend got into my car and put the Hearsay cassette in my deck and said, check this out! I was an instant mega fan. America here. ha We boozed and cruised with this blasting all the time.
