I echo that sentiment...wish the reunion could of lasted forever. Look how much (we)the GFR fans LOVE these guys TOGETHER! Great addition John...Great!
I think this is the best version of Grand Funk's version I've heard yet (including other live versions), and possibly the best version of this song ever.
it was great.. funking out on the front porch... no shirt on and the Windows open and front door wide open... Drinking Miller high life beer and smoking some good Grass.... and Kicking a Old Hog.... damn it's was some good times...
I saw them in concert in Clearwater,Fl the same year(97) Front row left, ears were ringing for 2 days I was a happy boy Thanks for post, brings back memories
beautiful song....I luv both versions of stones and gfr are but my God....GFR ROCKS!!!!!!! I'm still having goosebumps after hearing them 40 years ago!!!! \m/
I saw them on this tour and they were better than any of the three previous times I saw them...more refined, sounding cleaner, perfect vocals, great sound system, and great playing from all three of them. Had they stayed together they would have sold out many, many concerts. Everyone in the audience was screaming after every tune.
Too bad GFR never get mentioned in all the populist articles about The beggings rock n roll or Mark’s lack of credit as an artist. The guy sang, wrote, played guitar, keyboards, harmonica and percussion but because they were scorned by the press and Dj’s there place in rock history gets glazed over in favor of darling bands. Grand Funk were the originators of arena Rock as we know it. Give’m there due!!
You are damn right Walter! The critics hated them. A power trio playing 10 minute jams!! The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame won't even recognize them. Idiots!!!
Waaaaay back when, in 1971 I then thought this was a GFR original then I found out it was a Stones tune. I have to agree GFR has the best version even though it's a Cover. In 1971 I was in the Military in Germany and a little "Out of Touch".
Can anybody give me an answer as to why other guitarists dis Mark Farner? I don’t get it. He never claimed to be Hendrix so why all the bs that he was a crappy guitarist? I think he’s got all the talent he needs and more. He’s multi-talented and a charismatic performer. I❤️Mark Farner.
I followed Mark for a long time and I am not aware of other guitarist dising him. The Band was disliked in general by the Music Press. They never apprreciated them. Still don't . The fact that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame says it all !
i would say tamara its a touch of the green eyed monsters with other male guitarists.Mark had it all and still does.Youre right about charisma, there is something about that man that nobody else can touch, his style his stage presence, personality, looks,he had it ALL.loved his sheer funky attitude. This band were special together, pure brilliance.Mark never professed to be Hendrix he just wanted to give us a message and boy he did! Sooo sad they treated him so cruelly, this overshadowed the pure talent don and mel had.... Mark has aged so gracefully, still beautiful and STILL rockin his ass off!! love him so much....
I have the "Caught in the Act" album and have to agree with those who say this version is better than the Stones'. The two are in completely different styles. The Stones take a much bluesier approach and GFR a driving rock approach. Both versions are great, but it all comes down to personal preference. As long as different people have different taste the debate as to which is best will go on with no side being right.
thanks for this vid .What a brilliant band .Got the album Survival brought back from the States when I was 11,years old. no body had it in the Uk then It still Rocks now..What a tight band, haunting vocals at the start, mindblowing . Anybody got any more rare footage?
Just a comment here, To me Mark is an excellent solo artist no doubt he is. However seems like to me he really gels when he was with Don and Mel. Just an opinion its sad these guys are no more.
GFR is the best..& so awesome they're doing this Stones tune. Mark is so great on guitar & Mel on drums. Where is Don? These guys still Rock the house down !!!
One of the rare cover versions, which is better than the original ... but the Stones version comes immediate after the Grand Funk version. Other versions are a nice to hear in an elevator but miss the power of Grand Funk or Stones.
What a shame, grand funk went from rock royalty to a cover band, thanks to Don the destroyer screwing Mark out of the band. Don is a superb drummer, and Mel is an exceptional bassist, but without the key ingredient, MARK, they are a cover band. The music they play now was 98% written by MARK, who also played lead guitar, keyboards, harmonica, and most lead vocals, as a trio. MARK was and will always be Grand Funk, without him, they are now a cover band playing MARKS music! Saw them in 1971, 74, and 76, they were awesome even when Craig joined on keyboards, but without Mark I wouldn't waste my money.
Their live version of this on Caught in the Act is the best version, Stones version is great, but lacks the energy, GFR studio version is ok, they were always a better live Band, than a studio band.
Plus they were not at Woodstock, or Woodstock 99(disaster) not at Isle Of Wight Festival, they missed the majority of the bigger festivals(at least the ones that they recorded.
I never got to see all 3 together but did catch GFR in Columbia, SC in 2004, unfortunately w/o Mark. It was a fantastic experience.however. Never dreamed I'd get back stage passes from Don through Shock, and they later invited myself and a friend over to the Adam's Mark for drinks. When I was introduced to Don Brewer, he rose from his chair, walked across the room, and offered his hand. Don paid for food and drinks. He did mot have to do that. Most Funker's know they had problems, but Mark had withdrawn by choice for many reasons. What can you do? Ego's? What famous person in show biz does not have one? It is a prerequesit. Don has showmanship, Mark had the soul, yes, and Mel is still my favorite base player. Life's too short not to bury the hatchet at some point. I know Mark would say the real reward is in heaven anyway.
hmmmm not sure thats right.i was under the impression he was, asked to sighn papers whilst pissed,(drunk) after reunion gig which effectively voted him out of the corporation!!! don just happened to have the papers in his room that night so the story goes.Im sure don and mel have their story to tell, personally i would bang their heads together! That said don has done some shitty things.I think you will find Mark has more support!
It's sad the REAL GFR is no more thanks to that Greedy, egotistical, Don Brewer who wanted the spotlight more than Mel or Mark. Oh yeah, Don still advertises and plays as GFR but it's NOT the same without Mark and they REALLY SUCK (2015). As far as I'm concerned, there is no GFR!! Don STOLE Marks music and trademark right under Marks nose. Don't support ANY GFR without Mark!!!!
Ray Ramirez Sorry Ray, Don always has sung many of GFRR songs and is an outstanding drummer, Mel is the original God of Thunder before Gene Simmons probably picked up a bass, Mark is a good guitar player and front man but GFRR is still as strong as ever even though Mark parted ways.........No they don't suck in any way or form
Mike Wachowiak Sorry too, Mike, but listening to GFR w/o Mark is like listening to a band with No Soul. Mark WAS the talent and SOUL in that band and what they did to him (Mark, check out the facts), along with Terry Knight was horrendous. Besides, if you don't know what I mean about "SOUL" then you will never get it. There are always folks, like yourselves, that will listen to them without Mark because they haven't captured the real essence of the Soul in his music, which the current GFR Doesn't have. Also, there wouldn't be any GFR had it not been for Mark's songs which were stolen by Don & Mel....I have NO respect for white collar or any other types of Thieves!
@@rayrocker5150 I agree Mark is the SOUL, but MEL is the FUNK in GFR. Ie,"All you've got is money" (before it turns into HEAVY bass Rock-Blues). PS "Survival" (1971) is my fav. GFR album, and it seems they didn't play songs from it in concert too often (Gimme Shelter is the exception). Found just a couple of those tracks on very low-fi boots...
this is a great version of the Stones classic and a better one....my band is doing this version.....the best take of this is on the "caught in the act live" album i believe from 1971 tour...that is longer and more intense.....i appreciate the video posted but it is awful and the camerman had the shakes and a lotta heads in there
Grand funk has ALWAYS ruled,,,will ALWAYS rule TRUTH

Just as good as The Rolling Stones, or even better !
Not enough female vocals!

They always sound better than stones version to me.
Mothers Finest played with them that nite.
Saw them in 71 Bloodrock played with them
I love Mark’s Michigan accent. It’s gotten thicker over the years.
They’re totally killin it with this cover. It’s always been a fav of mine🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Mark Farner IS Grand Funk Railroad!!
Absolutely!

sunking2001 well they would sound better than and now since equipment had gotten so much better
Yeh...but my main point is they were a much better band musically and vocally than in the past...better than ever.
I loved the Survival album. What a mood.
