I grow them because they're way better freshly harvested, in stores they're typically imported and older and way more fiberous. We eat the seeds too, and use the flower petals and stamens as tea.
Great advise on NOT trying to turn these over alone! I can barely lift mine, even when the soil is dry... but okay, I'm a girl with not much strengh in her arms (and a bad back) anyhow, lol. That's why I build a rolling board for it, so I can at least move it easily. It's a 120lbs mortar tub, where I currently grow two tomato plants in - first tomato is almost ready to be picked, can't wait to do a taste test. The tub was full of all kinds of lilies last summer. Just wonderful for planting all kinds of things. Definitely a cheap alternative, compared to buying planters of a similar size. Will try zucchini in it next year - just need to find a climbing zucchini - for lack of ground space on my balcony.
Good morning, Todd. Where do you buy your tubers? We are putting in a new fishpond and I want another lotus. I cannot remember where I got the first one because it has been years ago. I could possibly divide the one I have, but I have never attempted to do anything with it. It really grew this year! And it is in one of those pond bags. I have to do another pond though. My son moved and needed to get rid of his fish and he put his KOI in my tiny goldfish pond! It stayed green all summer... So we are going to do bog filters and 2 ponds. hoping that solves the problem! That is a beautiful flower! I wonder if it would be too large for my 120 gal. fishpond though?
Do you keep part of the tubers to start up again or just start with fresh seeds (I was pretty disappointed when my seeds all failed but water lilies are pretty as well 😁
You can do that with tubers but I'm not with this variety or the other since all of them are edible. I got seeds from mine this season three from the giant pink and two from the smaller red one, I'll sprout them this February.
The color is just gorgeous! Can’t believe how tall the leaves are
Lotus can get up to 7 foot tall and leaves up to 36 inches in diameter.
Mercy they've grown!! 😅
Are you collecting seeds as well? Interesting seeing the process of collecting the tubers. 👍🏻
Thanks Todd....😋
Five seeds so far...
I use Lotus root sliced -so pretty, like a flower-in homemade Asian soup, yum…a bit like water chestnuts. I get the fat tubers linked together! 😋

Black Forest zucchini and Trombetta are climbing types.

There's smaller red varieties of lotus too, I get my tubers from Ten Mile Creek Nursery. Just Google them and they'll pop right up.
Tedious and hard work for you but you will be rewarded with great food 😊
Thanks, absolutely, they're very good eating!
I’m so fortunate to be able to get lotus root at a local Asian market…I bet yours taste fresher ! 😋
