@@buddahlovers What he said was that when you put the plants into darkness you deprive the plants of the ability to use the photosynthetic engine to build any thing. The terpenes are the most volatile cannabinoid component in the plant. That wonderful stinky fruity funk that you get when entering a greenhouse or grow chamber when its 30C is the terpenes vaporizing off into the ether. By keeping your plants in 12 hours of light right until harvest you allow the plant to continue to make more terpenes to replace those flying off your plants. I've done the same, two runs with 48 hours of light. Light intensity from 850-900 PPFD, running a Spider Farmer SE- 7000, and dropped the Temps to mid 60's for the duration. I watched your original podcast when you first talked about light before harvest about a year or so ago, I really think it changed the end result of the plants. They all have been fire. I currently have a run thats 7 weeks into flower, 3 ATF, and 1 grape pie from seed in my 4x4, and 3 monster cropped clones in my 4x8 of 2 grape ape, and 1 alpha blue. I will be doing light before harvest on them all.
I’ve done this with Bambino OG. I’m no longer doing outs out. I’ve always felt it makes sense. Since the plant is resting at night and the light is fueling it up. It makes sense that trichomes would go into overdrive if you leave lights on…. Dude. ALOT of things are clicking and making MUCH MUCH more sense. I legitimately hit that zen zone this entire video confirmed what I already believed and what I started playing around with
Yea I tried a 48 hour of light with 4 plants in my 4x8 tent. I was hitting them with 900-950 ppfd, using a SE 7000 spider farmer, depending on the height of the canopy. Two plants went 48 hours and two I left I another 24 hours, so they got 72. I was questioning my decision, but it was a very noticeable difference. And the buds were taller, or elongated I thought. I've been doing 48 hours of light on all my other runs after that. No flush, don't need it, running organic down to earth ingredients. And to be honest, I don't think I watered during the 48 hours. Just before and never opened the tent. I wanted the surprise to see the difference.
Im about to put my ladies into flower tomorrow im so glad i ran into this MRGROWIT. Thank you for everything you have taught us in our community. I also love FROM THE STASH podcast you all are perfect for information.
Cant remember who explained it but i understood it as, trichomes are like the plants sunscreen. Thats why we intensify the lights and bring them closer. The plant creates trichs in order to keep itself from burning.
Im a bit confused, in my understanding the whole reason for 48h darkness is to speed up the process to reduce Chlorophyll, which will ofc make the taste and smoke better + reducing temp to keep the terpenes in a good state
But in the video it’s about performance of trychomes so light would be better for that reason but we want to determine chlorophyll before harvest so in my opinion we should keep the darkness and not go for 48 hours of light, which is better for potential of trychomes but will not decrease chlorophyll amount

Going off the interview with Bugbee and Shane from Migro. I started experimenting with high par on seedlings a month ago. First group were under 450-550 PAR for the first week, second group were started under 550 to 700. After one week the second group were as tall and had thicker stems than group one, after week 2 they surpassed the first group. Since I increased the lighting, I also increased how much I would feed by 50%. I started feeding both groups at the same time group one on day 13 and group 2 on day 6. In addition I took 4 clones 2 weeks ago ran 1st week at 350-450 PAR and 2nd week at 650-700 PAR. They were fed starting day 7 and out of the dome by 12 days. All survived and have put on new growth. Clones were struck in soil with amendments. No additional CO2 was added to environment. Wondering if anyone is working with these kind of numbers and what your results were.

I'm hesitant to run it with controls, I don't have room nor does anyone want plants that are less than the rest?
Totally makes sense the plants use light for photosynthesis to grow. Next harvest 24hrs light before harvest. Too bad I don’t have 2 tents to test side by side.
Pretty much the same as when I did 48 hrs darkness…or when I just chop before the light comes on….or mid day… in my experience when she ready to be chopped she ready day or night. But I don’t have a side by side of a clone run so I guess I’m just guessing 🤣
So I just tried this. I had seen a video with Dr. Bugs Bunny before about 48 hrs of light. Did it work? Who knows. Did not seem to hurt. Buds so sticky its hard to handle.
For decades I've noticed that the plants get really smelly and juice right before the light cycle because they know they are about to get blasted with light so that is my cut time. I've tried all the other things.
I use to do the 48 hrs of dark at end but stopped after I realized it wasn’t helping at all & my soil would immediately start growing mold which would make my buds get a moldy terp taste, it was beyond harsh!!
12/12 is fine. I had a nice frosting happen after adding a bunch of extra cool white CFLS to my grow room. 150w of the blue CFLS and put them close to the flowers. In pots, sunlight through the window glass, or UV a week before harvest worked best for me. I was giving both sunlight through the window glass and grow lights.
I think realistic timeframes to achieve any level of terpene development or preservation during the life cycle of this plant is to start from the beginning stages of you plant. I treat my tent like a typical lifecycle that this plant would experience in its natural environment. The last 3-4 weeks of flower I stop feeding and use just regular tap(no chlorine). I also never defoliate in the last 4 weeks also. I also dial back light intensity from 100% to 80% and from 18 hours of light to 14-16 depending on the cultivar and closely watching how it handled said conditions throughout. If posssible I dial back the temp to 70-75 degrees F.
I do 24 hours of light immediately following up with 48 hours of darkness. I also Stab the bottom stems with toothpicks before 24 hours of light. I also reduce the temperature 🌡
I would think more then half the things advertised online is incorrect about this trade and a lot of things that have not changed for thousands of years as well.
Hardly conclusive, but glad to hear another opinion. Colder temps seem to create a frostier bud. It doesn't make sense based on the science he is aware of, but such is the case from what I have seen.
in nature the nights get cooler as the flowers develop. keep them warm in the day and cool at night in the grow room seems to make sense. changing the light at the last minute would confuse the plant , not sure it makes any sense
true there r even some people that say how the moon/sun r located to the earth differ on the terp % but i cant tell u if thats true but i mean it could be possible but sometimes u cant just wait another 2 weeks for harvest
He's right, fresh plant oils are less toxic and plants detoxify/respire at night. Watching this because of citrus fruit such as orange peel's terpenes. They were used to cure ailments in other countries where people look younger and healthier than people of the same ages elsewhere.
I grew my plants outside,..au natural, sunshine/heat and water, lots of water, with the occasional feeding...so thats how I do it, and I dont have any light after the sun drops,..fingers crossed, as there is amber and white hairs, but the bud is so heavy at the ends...I still continue to let them go do whatever they are going to,...I hope I harvest them in time..
So its not a matter of whats fact and whats fiction? The argument is: Is it better to preserve terpenes? Or to allow the plant to create new terpenes? At the end of its life, that is. I see so many people quoting this video without actually understanding the point hes making.
No, he is clearly saying there is no hard facts to prove that dark is better. He’s saying either 24 hours of light or cold or both pretty much. 100% dark is not the way.
Interesting... I'd agree with temperature.. Not sold on the light part... plants create sugars and energy through photosynthesis, yes, but they also use a respiration cycle. Might have to try this!
Best regards. Thanks for your information. Any thoughts on using a combination of LED light s pectrum with a 450 Watt Metal Halide for Veg. Then HPS for Bloom.? Transformer has dimmer capacity. Or would you think a full out LED set up would bring better results? Once again best regards and appreciate your thoughts on this combination?
They say sugars go down to the roots at night to feed beneficial bacteria... less sugar in bud is smoother smoke so harvest in dark, right before lights should come on.
@@talboyovGY the whole reason for 48h darkness is to speed up the process to reduce Chlorophyll, which will ofc make the taste and smoke better + reducing temp to keep the terpenes in a good state, if you want to believe the Doctor you can do it. I run a perpetual and change the lights back to 18/6 when I put the next round in, it usually takes me 3 days because I take the tops first then the mids and lowers on the last day. I've seen a difference in the size of the next level overnight, it actually surprised me the first time. Didn't think anything of it though because I do it out of necessity. The only thing is most cultivars will start putting out bananas, but they have no time to mature so it has never caused me to get seeds.
@@boriskogan7903 Yes, yes, three days is pushing your luck in 18/6, if you want to give the mids and lowers more time to fatten up I would keep it in 12/12 or 11/13 until you are satisfied with their development. Partial harvests make the plant react as if there is a predator and can make it panic so to speak. Remember the plant's primary goal is to mate and make seeds, if it thinks death is near it will try to self pollinate out of desperation. I wouldn't try this unless you have a very long veg, like 50-60 days, more root = better ability to respond to stressors.
@@boriskogan7903 No problem, happy to share. I also trim below the net, but only the bud sites. I leave the fan leaves because they still produce sugars the plant can take advantage of and provide dump sites for the plant to deposit waste it takes up by accident. If I were to do a study to gather evidence over quite literally any topic as an amateur , and asked as many others to participate in it as I can for a corroborative study, no matter what we find people wouldn't call it "evidence" even though by definition that's exactly what it would be. We could literally write our findings in a report and send it to scholarly publishers and be nothing but denied given we aren't directly involved with said publishers. We live in a world where the only evidence we are allowed to have is what the people that control the markets want us to have.
The most important aspect of the scientific method is the final step - repetition. If you think these guys are blowing hot air, you can re-perform their experiment. That's why they publish methodology and provide citations. That being said, they do have years upon years of training in how to design experiments specifically so when retested the results are the same. This is why they have respect in the community. @@mikethegreat4296 I don't remember what I was referring to specifically from this video but I wasn't denying any information shown in the video, just more so pointing out that academic research is very controlled. I have harvested both ways, I still like the way it comes out with Darkness I only do about 24 hours to 48 hours max also the cold and darkness I think makes the terpenes stronger for some reason
I've found 48hrs of darkness makes the purples and reds more prominent than running 12/12 up to harvest, even the hairs on the buds are noticeably more vibrant looking. After curing you'd think it was two separate strains. I believe this is a matter of contrast due to the buds being a lighter shade of green as a result of less chlorophyl. This is with cuts from the same mother grown, dried and cured under identical conditions. The smell, flavor and effect seems identical to me though.
@@magnumxlpi If you let a plant sit in complete darkness or even inadequate light the chlorophyl slowly begins to decay, the leaves progressively turn lighter shades of green until eventually turning yellow and dying. This is why lower leaves on a plant which are shaded by the upper canopy turn yellow and fall off. The dark purples and faint reds simply stand out more against a lighter green background than they do a darker green one. The purple and red plant matter itself contains chlorophyl, it's possible that reducing the chlorophyl content within it makes the colors bolder. So, professor of botany. Tell me what doesn't make sense here.
@@WDYUE Yeah, I run about 75F during the day cycle and 55-60F during the night cycle for roughly the last 4 weeks of flower. Regardless, 48 hours of darkness does make a difference in how vibrant the bud looks. The strain I've been running is a nice pheno of Black Domina crossed with C99. Solid genetics.
When I harvest my plants they are done with producing terpenes or trichomes. I switch off the lights 48 hours before cutting to pre-cure the plants. If the plant is getting no more light she can’t do no mir photosynthesis and won’t produce any more chlorophyll, what I don’t want to have in my flowers
Precision Stress Training= more terps more oil more weight. Too much stress for too long =seeds. Light stress, dark stress, ph stress, temperature of room and water . Stress your plants for the last 4-7 days, then chop down before pollination. I have not tried 48 hours of light yet but will try next run. But 48-72 hrs of darkness I see a noticeable bigger sized trichome and few more pistols per bud, and I can tell by smell, the terps have increased. Stressing with lowered ph I have literally had oil spewing/oozing out of bud and stems. Stress is the key to unleashing this plants potential. Easily add 10% overall across the board. I wait for milky tichomes, 5-10% amber, then stress her until I see nut sacks and nanners then chop her down and hang her. Depending on genetics 4-7 days of stress before she pollinates and starts producing seeds.
dude thats pure bro science bullshit coincidence. i did darkness too, didnt help jackshit, in fact there were trichomes that became more clear. it boosts terps, thats it. it COSTS thc content.
Makes sense as we want to give the plant as much light as possible for more growth and development. We flip to 12/12 because we need to trigger flowering, and compensate for the fewer hours of light by moving the fixture closer and/or turning them up towards the 1000ppfd range. This is one of the reasons autos are so good. I've got a Wedding Glue auto 6 weeks into flower on an 18/6 cycle, and the extra light really makes a difference, imo.
Of course the plants must be resilient I’m relying on humidity levels in My Home had no issues recently with eight moved it under my electric sky 300 es in a 2.4 Taking up most of the space sure the heck beats running my mega light pro for one plant took down 7/ Experimental that’s what it’s all about Giving my last gelato on week eight going on straight filtered water molasses and then I will chop week 11 Feeding organics I could probably just give straight water more colors and density Each day East Coast humidity levels are below 60 which is efficient I try different things and each time they work out very well I do use TPS billions a couple times a week just to give that beneficial Health Last stages excellent for veg Thank you for the input
The darkness before harvest THC increase isn't just bro science, it comes from a University of Illinois study back in the 90s, using gas chromatography. Mel Frank knows the study, It's in one of his books. Bruce never tested that, he said. Leave it at that. I agree with Bruce that nothing grows without photosynthesis.
I always reduce temps even in veg, i go no more go then 73 degrees even in flower. I get high potent buds. Last time i checked the thc levels it was in the high 20s.
how do u lower ur temps especially in hot summers? cuz i grow in the basement where its alr a bit more cold but with the big LED etc its still a bit too hot and i dont rly have the money to buy an AC (and i wouldnt even need it for another reason except of the grow so it would be pretty stupid)
@untermRadar710 I have an ac. But you can go do the boot leg edition and do a d.i.y. with a fan, a cooler box, and a lot of ice and cold water. That'd if you can't afford the extra on the light bill.
The cold sprebemtd it from evaporating if u did a good job your turpentine is there and slow dry is natural dry which is what u need for perfect flavors 60 °f 60rh% 60 day cure only I had it dry ten days full taste smooth smoke after a week of curing it was the cold that did it
I just harvest a run, my lights started at 12/12 for the first 4weeks , then 10/14 from weeks 5-6 then 8 hours on 16 hours off and increased my light. The plants smelled more and made way more trichomes plus finished faster then my other tent on a regular 12/12 cycle. Just saying. Cannabis is a short day long night flowering plant. I veg with a 13 hour on light cycles. 5 hours on 2 hours off 5 on 6 hours off 3 hours on 2 hours off and repeat. The plants grow a little leggy in the early stages but when they hit teen/adult stage they have a growth boost and create really nice structure and grow really fast. Because they’re searching for light and stretching. I think there’s more to this then we are talking about and both ends of the spectrum are needed.
I thought the logic behind it was the dark period helps give it a proper flush bc the plant doesn't absorb nutes like it does with lights on. Two days of darkness doesn't seem like alot of time to do much to terps. I chop mine down with lights on sometime and can't tell a difference.
@Chris I have chopped during lights on and a 48-72 hour period dozens of times. I tend to follow the lights out rule more but really can't tell the difference. Just chopped my flowering girls a month ago during lighs on and I cannot tell a difference between them and their mothers. My senses probably aren't the best indicator though bc olfactory fatigue aka getting used to the terps.
Yes it is fact that temperature is one of the keys. Plants have had to deal with temp swings throughout the entire genetic code, all the way back to the very first cannabis plants. This has embedded a genetic physical response. Nobody has taken the sun away or stoped the earth from turning. I dont think the plant has had enough evolutionary development with round the clock light or darkness. So in my opinion we should really be looking for these 1 in 200 that show increased reaction to light dep or the other. If it does indeed influence a desired reaction from the plant then the breeder's have another fun project to potentially coax out of our wonderful lady's. Just an additional thought. What if this isn't creating new terpenes but the low temps are preserving more of them that would otherwise off gas. That would seem as if more developed but wouldn't actually be the case. You've just preserved more already existing terps. Kinda like topping creates more tops. 🤔 Nope, those two nodes already existed topping didn't "create" new anything. It just got the top foliage out of the way so those existing 2 nodes are now in direct light. LST and bending the top down to a horizontal orientation expose these nodes just as topping would. However, you dont endure 2 or 3 days of stunted growth. Outdoor is the only method I see to be efficient for topping. It doesn't cost anything to keep the sun on, accumulate all the days of stunted growth depending on how many times you top, it can add up. Indoor especially commercial this can get costly over a course of time, every minute she doesn't grow she's just pushing your harvest date further. This is a reoccurring and accumulative deficit of time which is an expense. I'm personally intrigued about what possibilities may await concerning common allergies to pollen ect. Very exciting future ahead nonetheless!
Topping or bending of the main stem isn't about getting more light to the other branches, it's about breaking "Apical dominance" i.e the stronger hormone signalling (auxin) in that main stem that causes it to stretch toward the light. On most varieties topping once at the 5th node gives results that more than make up for 1 or 2 days slower growth.
what about the increased degredation of chlorophyll? if there's no more light to drive photosynthesis, wouldnt a plant use its remaining resources to make new roots? using the many nitrogens tied up with carbons and the 1 magnesium atom to make up chlorophyll? id say thats desirable for cleaner smoke if youre going to consume the flower
Dr Bruce always keeping it real. Cheers.
Cheers!

@@TriStateTrichomes there is harmless uv light that does only increase your growth, there however is uv-b and uv-c cathodes avaible. those for 10minutes for uvc and 1 hour for uvb WILL raise the trichome and resin level. its damn proven, its just not that in general uv is helpfull.
Definitely trying lights on this harvest. I have always did lights off for 48hrs.
same cutting tomorrow lights on now
The Great Doctor always gives great info.👍🏾💯
I legitimately hit that zen zone this entire video confirmed what I already believed and what I started playing around with
the atf has their own strain.
So you just left the lights on the last 2 days correct?
I wanted the surprise to see the difference.
damn so my plants gon love the 1870µmol/s on full go for the last 50h👀
When I did my first grow I didn't do any darkness and buds came out great, I'm on my 2nd grow
Same here .
How many grows under your belt now (a year later)?
Freestyle genius.
Makes sense i always knew that was a myth. I always use light until harvest with amazing results lowering temps in the last couple weeks
Im a bit confused, in my understanding the whole reason for 48h darkness is to speed up the process to reduce Chlorophyll, which will ofc make the taste and smoke better + reducing temp to keep the terpenes in a good state
Yes and there is studies that you should even do 72 hours of darkness
But in the video it’s about performance of trychomes so light would be better for that reason but we want to determine chlorophyll before harvest so in my opinion we should keep the darkness and not go for 48 hours of light, which is better for potential of trychomes but will not decrease chlorophyll amount
@@TurnZzPsnwell if its only about chlorophyll then who cares cuz just dry with the right temp and air moisture u loose all the chlorophyll too
@@untermRadar710A guy cut his plants down after 24, 48, and 72 hours. Then sent them away to labs for testing. The ones cut down after 48 hours of darkness had more THC.

I know of 2 growers that feed high numbers. 1 of them sets his lights 100% out the cloner, both have monster grows

@@willkiker6892 you're a 100% right brother, I wasn't really planning on experimenting. But after I saw the results from the first group, I just had to try pushing the 2nd group. I'm hesitant to run it with controls, I don't have room nor does anyone want plants that are less than the rest?
yeah i sprout outdoor seeds in full sun and never have any problems so i say they can handle it and they always look very happy
Totally makes sense the plants use light for photosynthesis to grow. Next harvest 24hrs light before harvest. Too bad I don’t have 2 tents to test side by side.
I’m curious, how did it turn out ?
Pretty much the same as when I did 48 hrs darkness…or when I just chop before the light comes on….or mid day… in my experience when she ready to be chopped she ready day or night. But I don’t have a side by side of a clone run so I guess I’m just guessing 🤣
Dont need another tent, just put one plant in the closet next time for the last 24 hours :D
thanks again Chris
Oh Man 🥺 I was hoping for a new batch of AWESOME information. THIS WAS GREAT FOR those about to harvest 🤜🌟🤛🪴🪴🪴
I ,we can all learn from Dr.Bruce. this guy is Awesome
Don't water at all before harvest for atleast 2 days or more
12/12 is fine.
I think this man is spot on. Great subject to touch on.
Makes sense for sure.
Make sense because they make the terpenes and all that fun stuff while the lights are on
true and especially the THC is the sunscreen of the plant so 100% the thc goes up too
I think realistic timeframes to achieve any level of terpene development or preservation during the life cycle of this plant is to start from the beginning stages of you plant.
Good shit my dude, keep it coming
Makes sense
Yes 60 degree in the end
I would think more then half the things advertised online is incorrect about this trade and a lot of things that have not changed for thousands of years as well.
He’s right
Just do the best u can from start too harvest, dont expect a “hack” like turning of your lights too turn your harvest into topshelf❤
What do you think about harvesting before the lights Turn on ? something about sugars and stuff That go down into the soil at night.
Hardly conclusive, but glad to hear another opinion. Colder temps seem to create a frostier bud. It doesn't make sense based on the science he is aware of, but such is the case from what I have seen.
Dr Bugbee is living Legend! 🔥 thanks for this video
I do this with my autoflowers and it seems to help with some extra last minute resin production
in nature the nights get cooler as the flowers develop. keep them warm in the day and cool at night in the grow room seems to make sense. changing the light at the last minute would confuse the plant , not sure it makes any sense
About 2 hours into lights on is the cut time.
Remember light decreases from either side of the day and temperature reduction is natural.
true there r even some people that say how the moon/sun r located to the earth differ on the terp % but i cant tell u if thats true but i mean it could be possible but sometimes u cant just wait another 2 weeks for harvest
I'm just going to stick with 12 on 12 off until harvest. I live in CO so I will water up until harvest for a slower cure.
I see Mr.grow doing this fornhis nxt experiment
Ok thanks i will try
Just like in nature, dropping temps plenty of light
So its not a matter of whats fact and whats fiction? The argument is: Is it better to preserve terpenes? Or to allow the plant to create new terpenes? At the end of its life, that is. I see so many people quoting this video without actually understanding the point hes making.
No, he is clearly saying there is no hard facts to prove that dark is better. He’s saying either 24 hours of light or cold or both pretty much. 100% dark is not the way.
@@EAster33 cool
Interesting... I'd agree with temperature.. Not sold on the light part... plants create sugars and energy through photosynthesis, yes, but they also use a respiration cycle. Might have to try this!
in the respiration cycle they do nothing than to produce terps, and that costs a tiny tiny amount of thc.
true but some people grow automatics on 24/7 light and the plants r good too so id fs try it and if there is no difference then at least u know

They say sugars go down to the roots at night to feed beneficial bacteria... less sugar in bud is smoother smoke so harvest in dark, right before lights should come on.

The plant will discard them when they are no longer beneficial.

It's not blind.
I think it's a pretty dark day for humanity when we can practice something for years, such as experimental design, and not get better at it than amateurs.
@@mikethegreat4296 I don't remember what I was referring to specifically from this video but I wasn't denying any information shown in the video, just more so pointing out that academic research is very controlled. Like I very much had it in mind that whatever evidence from a study would've been heavily repeated before sending any findings, and then repeated there after (I think that's what I was referring to when I said "and asked as many others to participate in it as I can for a corroborative study")
That makes absolutely zero sense from a science point of view
@@magnumxlpi
If you let a plant sit in complete darkness or even inadequate light the chlorophyl slowly begins to decay, the leaves progressively turn lighter shades of green until eventually turning yellow and dying.
Tell me what doesn't make sense here.
they get purple or reds cause of cold temp .. esp when its not in their dna to get purple or red.
@@WDYUE Yeah, I run about 75F during the day cycle and 55-60F during the night cycle for roughly the last 4 weeks of flower.

Just a thought.. what if you do lower temperature, 48hrs lights on then 24hrs off b4 harvest?
then nanners n seeds, dont overstress.

May I ask, are you running an indica dom variety or you do this for Sat dom too ? Thanks.
@@englishsteve1465 I did for both, the sativas kind of finish faster and it helps with keeping them nice and squat.
I thought the logic behind it was the dark period helps give it a proper flush bc the plant doesn't absorb nutes like it does with lights on. Two days of darkness doesn't seem like alot of time to do much to terps. I chop mine down with lights on sometime and can't tell a difference.
ive always heard that the 24-72 hours of dark allows for the breakdown of chlorophyll before harvest
@@Shade_91 chlorophyll literally has a halftime of weeks, yet you try to break it down by 48 hours of darkness, bro science dudes are funny.
