    I got a garage closed as a result of it having a "new" MOT. Having had some non-related work done it was being road tested it suffered a total brake failure due to rotted out brake pipes and, and , and. The nice men from VOSA and trading standards took the supplying garage to the cleaners via court.

      @@GooseWaffe It was a hard slog, but it right was done in the end.
      An amusing little follow-up event: A few weeks after the final court case I was "pulled" at a VOSA check point. Needless to say this is always a bit of a worry. As an MOT tester myself, you tend to see ‘ I’m selling the car see what you can do‘ way too often…
    While nothing I’ve tested has been this bad, all we can do as a tester is go with what the car tells us. Okay some items (NOT ON THIS MG) could perhaps be marked as advisories depending on tester. But if it’s marked on the sheet then the owner / purchaser can get a rough idea of what to expect…
    I always recommend people looking into purchasing a vehicle that they look a few years back on the MOT history ( easy enough to do online) which gives a broader image of said vehicle and not just ‘ I’m selling the car can you make it as clean as possible’.
    Yes people get annoyed when you fail / put advisors on a vehicle however it’s for the safety of YOU AND OTHERS AROUND YOU…

    • @lmm
      @lmm  2 года назад +3

      I'm sure you get alot of here mate, just get it through.
      There are a mix of fails and advisories on the car. The problem is that there was nothing on the MOT at all. No advisories, no notes, nothing.
      I checked back through the history, and the faults it has were recorded on a previous mot, but assumed all fixed at this point...
      Precisely, people don't understand why there is an MOT. People also get annoyed that something breaks - oh its just had an MOT, and now it's stopped running.
      That's different things...

      Most definitely. VOSA (or whatever they are called this week) work hard to get such people into court and when they present evidence it sticks better than **** to a blanket.
      Trading Standards can b a bit of a mixed bag, even in areas where they very proactive some of their staff are only good(?) at polishing the chair they are sitting on, others enjoy getting out there and really getting stuck into rouge dealers. I guess I was lucky and landed on a very proactive one.

    Thank you for this video, Lawrie. I was unfortunately in a similar situation a few years ago in 2016. In the US we have state inspections, which are similar to MOTs, but there are far too many shady garages that will pass vehicles with illegal modifications or that don't pass emissions and safety checks (especially for family members or friends). I bought a 2003 Dodge Dakota a few years ago, and as it was my first vehicle, I didn't take the time to check it, and of course it was dark out. I later found out that the exhaust manifold was completely rusted through, the tailpipe was rusted through and eventually fell off entirely, the whole steering assembly was bad and leaked all over the place, there were a lot of electrical faults and the whole frame was VERY rusty, especially in the front behind the bumper. It still passed state inspection, but towards the end I had to stop driving it because it was so unsafe and every time I drove it, something else broke. So NEVER take the seller's word for it, NEVER take the garage's word for it, and ALWAYS look for yourself before you buy.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  2 года назад +2

      Yeah, lots of dodgy people out there. The MOT in the UK is a safety check, making sure the car is safe to be on the road, which is very useful. I'm amazed at what can be driven in some parts of the US!

    The biggest issue with the MOT system seems to be that any garage can issue an MOT cert (except in NI). Maybe the system may be safer if, like in NI, only DVA test centres could issue certs.

    • @18robsmith
      @18robsmith 2 года назад +2

      On the mainland all MOT testing garages have to have one or more certified testers and all the "paperwork" has to be signed by that person. But I agree that the NI system presents a much fairer system to us, the trusting customer.

    This is a nice thing about Northern Ireland, we still have government/council/whoever run specialist MOT centres, bundled in with driving test centres, not a lift in a garage. It may have taken 3 months for me to get my car through the earliest slot I could get as a result of backlogs from all the vehicle lifts breaking at the start of 2020 then Covid, but at least the system prevents MOTs from being bought, so when buying a Northern Ireland car you can have more confidence in the MOT.
    You're randomly appointed a lane to go to, 1 of 4 per centre, and I think testers are moved around centres so you can't get friendly with one to get an easy pass. You need to book a slot 2 weeks prior under normal circumstances too to further hinder attempts to get a certain tester, with the exception of cancellations, but they're still random lanes, etc.

    Not sure that a UK spec MGTF had a passenger airbag.None of the three I've owned has had one. The central locking doesn't work because it appears to be a base 1600 and doesnt have central locking? The passenger side door having a key slot is the clue. The third rail back on the roof will jam the roof if you don't keep it back. If you mean the duct tape over the holes in the rear subframe was actually over corroded holes, then that's an issue, but if you mean the oval holes in the front rear member's of the subframe, that's factory to keep the road grit out of the holes.

      @@eze8970 It's a long drawn out list of reasons as to what causes them. The development of the engine only went as far as 40,000 miles, and the head gasket was fine. Head gasket issues started to become an issue at 60,000 miles when engines experienced overheating events (suffering low coolant as an example), and the polymer barriers on the gaskets would move, mixing the coolant and the oil and starting the whole sorry process. The through bolts weren't exactly strong enough either, so they couldn't squeeze the gasket in place either. Land Rover came up with the multi-layer steel gasket which solved some of it, but I think their positioning of the thermostat to be on the entry to the engine (not the exit) really did save the engine. But it was really SAIC who did the biggest improvements to the K-Series when they brought out the MG 6 with the N-Series engine. Stronger through bolts, MLS gasket, thermostat positioning, even replacing the plastic dowels used in the engine with steel/aluminium (Can't remember which). There isn't that much meat on the head though to skim, so while yours has been done once it won't be done again, so if yours goes again you would be looking at a new head or one of those head saver shims that are available. Worth noting too that Ford (for example) didn't get close to the weight and power out put of the K Series until at least 2004.

Upon sending it for a wheel alignment (one of the first things I wanted doing) they said the corrosion was so bad that one good bump would likely knock out the rear axle and that the seat belt mounting points were so corroded, if I had an accident, those too would probably rip out. I told them about the MOT and they showed me there had in fact been welding work done but the rest of the corrosion was completely ignored. It looks like I'm going to have to scrap it. One such car was a very cheap 2003-2004 Mercedes S Class with a MOT which seemed a great car especially as it had all of the optional extra's including the fridge, but they decided to take it to a independent Mercedes specialist to get his opinion on it and the list of faults both mechanical and electrical was extremely long and one surprising thing the garage owner who was inspecting the car found was the previous owners had patch welded the exhaust (badly) where it had rusted away which is a complete no, no as the exhaust gases can easily leak through the bad welds and if the rest of the exhaust rots around the patch the patch itself would have been a lovely projectile that could endanger other drivers. Safe to say the repair cost of their Mercedes would have been well over what it was worth.

    People rely too much on the MOT when buying a car. The MOT is literally a snapshot of that car in a year. I know of cars that have passed an MOT, driven off the ramp and snapped a spring. Things like wheels are easily swapped to avoid getting fails/advisories for worn tyres then swapped back after.
    While looking at the recent MOT history is a good place to start when buying a car you should still do all the usual checks.
    Obviously it's slightly different if a car has a dodgy MOT but even so surely a test drive would have highlighted some of the issues that would have been picked up on a proper inspection?
    Unfortunately with prices of used cars going up I can see dodgy MOTs getting more common as a £100 scrapper with a £100 dodgy MOT will suddenly be worth an easy £1000 to someone in need of a cheap car.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  2 года назад

      The MOT is a snapshot of a cars road worthiness at the point in time that it was given.
      The MOT history was good, showed issues which had then I assumed had been taken care of to receive a clean MOT.
      The test drive was within a city, so really struggled to get a feel for it.

  • @BurpleRX7
    @BurpleRX7 2 года назад

    The MOT system is massively flawed, easily bypassed by those in the know and usually handled by the apprentice who couldn’t give a damn,
    The biggest flaw is the not being able to explore for faults, if something is covered (say with tape) they can not investigate, I once brought a mk3 Toyota supra, the rear seats were getting wet and it had brand new MOT. I lifted the seat to be greeted with next to no metal, I could see the road and that went from seatbelt mount to seat belt mount,
    The rule is no corrosion within a inch or so of a structural point like a seatbelt mount but because they couldn’t lift the seat and because the seller had covered the underneath with plastic trims to hide the damage it passed.
    We should have a equivalent system to the German system where the car is truly inspected even down to the quality of your brake fluid, not just is there some in there.
    As for classics and exempt, there should be a rolling scale,
    My 1993 RX7 will obviously not pass modern emissions tests, it’s impossible BUT there should be a category to say for example, the emissions are within a tolerance of what they were when new,
    Maybe a IVA test or something similar to custom builds and kit cars,
    I am sure genuine car fans would welcome a test that was fair and sensible and protecting them as owners,
    Ok I’m sure the stance nation 2012 pop and bang map slam it on its arse brigade would argue that its “not fair” but safety is safety,
    Even those that think they are doing a good job sometimes get it wrong, the amount of cars I see running seat harnesses that are fitted wrong is terrifying, they would be better off with no restraint at all as submarining is certain death.
    Unfortunately Britain is very set in its ways and people don’t like change

    To be fair I'm guessing most people have made this sort of mistake at some point but I have to say, having once been a certified mot inspector, all be it for motorcycles, I'd never advise a recent ticket be taken as a guide to condition or mechanical safety. There are areas that cannot, even by a conscientious inspector, be examined such as areas covered by plastic protectors etc.
    On the subject of whether you might be prosecuted if caught driving, the law states that the driver is responsible for the condition of the vehicle. I imagine it might be at the discretion of the copper who pulls you but listening to you describe how obvious some of the faults were you might struggle with the 'sorry I've only just bought it' excuse. More to the point, in the event of an collision, things almost certainly would get tricky.

    Don’t knock the MG TF. I’ve have had and still have many really expensive super cars and the MG TF is up there with the best of them. Much maligned, unfairly in my estimation. I bought one on a whim on eBay one Sunday morning whilst in bed with my wife and she asked, why? Because I could I replied. It turned out to be a great little car. Easy to work on like my Boxster. So it will be a great car when you have finished fettling. 😁

      A couple of years ago I picked up a very cheap Audi A4 Cabriolet, with 11 months MOT it sounded great. Mainly due to parts of the exhaust being 'Bluetooth'.
      Top tip, do not buy a V6 2.4 sport A4 Cabriolet needing a new exhaust. I had one custom made costing £800, and that was £3200 less than a national exhaust company quoted. 😱
