As a teenager I watched in shock as the punk ass 11 year old alto player in our combo asked Brubek if he might play with him later in the day- to our shock he said yes and they tore down the house on this song
Brubeck would hold Rodrigo y Gabriela in the highest esteem - he would have enjoyed your brilliant take on Desmond’s TAKE FIVE. An inspired choice. Muchas gracias. 🌹
These two took Ireland by storm around the turn of the century. They started off busking on Dublin's Grafton St and very quickly grew to playing some big venues. I was the lighting engineer for them ca. 2002/2003/2004 at The Half Moon club in Cork and saw them a few times around that period. Incredible musicians.
I was visiting Ireland, Dublin and Cork, and was amazed at the level the street musicians play at. There are these two for example and one I bought a beer after listening to him for an hour. He had played back up guitar for a bunch of big names. And, side bar, I worked in technical theater for 30 years here in the states. . . Lighting, T.D. Carpenter. . . But this woman in this video "Plays with the blood", as Rodrigo De Souza says in Mozart in the Jungle.
There's an interview with Dave Brubeck where he talks about the composition of Take Five. Apparently, Brubeck wrote the chord sequence and Desmond jammed over the top to try to work out a melody; eventually, Desmond hit on the tune we all know. When it came to attributing composition, however, Desmond was insistent that it should be to him alone, and Brubeck let him have it! (I believe Desmond was a difficult man, and the relationship between him and Brubeck was often strained.) Of course, the tune is the really great thing about it, so perhaps it's fair enough.
Brubeck has notoriety for "odd" time signatures. Especially like in Blue Rondo a La Turk and take five was technically released/recorded as a Dave brubeck quartet song (of which Paul Desmond was part of the quartet)
@@MrBarney2107 The version I heard Dave tell was that he had asked Paul to write a tune in 5 and Paul said he had a couple of themes but could get no further. Dave then helped him to organise the themes into the number we know today. Dave let him have the composer's rights as he (Dave) had written the other stuff on Time Out. Incidentally there are tapes of the rehearsals of T5 for the album where they were having all sorts of difficulties playing it for some while until the mastered it - see Philip Clark's biography.
because it is way too rushed. Take 5 means in essence to take a break, to calm down a bit. The way they did it, while impressive is more like, take 3 minutes to snort cocaine and speed the shit out of whatever we need to do
I sadly never got to see him play and I'm not sure why considering he was very much still active when I was an aspiring jazz musician back in school. I also think he would be absolutely thrilled to know that probably one of the first charts that high school bands across the country/world play is "Take Five". It's a very accessible odd-meter tune to play and good for learning (albeit probably at a much slower tempo than intended).
Excuse me, not timeless but 5 / 4 time. Also ironical that this song, “Take 5” first appeared in the Dave Brubeck Quartet album titled: TIME OUT haha 😊
I met these two many years ago in Brixton when they were supporting David Gray. They absolutely stole the show but were such lovely, humble people to chat to afterwards. I'll always remember them and the music.
I first listened to "take-five" in 1961 while in high school in san francisco ca I became a complete fan of all Brubeck music! this cover is exemplary in all ways possible. the joyous laughing at its finale is so refreshing during these awful current times we must all endure.
I love the "less polished" version! Right now, with so many of us separated from each other, informal and honest wins the day. Thank you so much for sharing this!
OK, this is what can happen when 2 exceptional musicians are so in tune with each other(no pun intended)! And I'm a kit drummer who played this song in a band back in 1966, just before I got drafted. I also enjoy their "deceptive endings", a common trait of theirs. It makes their music even more intriguing! If THAT'S even possible!!!!!
Proof there still is a God in Brazil allowing beautiful people to express themselves through talented music safe inspired and forever Brazilian beautiful.
I came in for a few seconds just to check out this guitar version of drawbacks Brubak’s famous piece ... and I was glued to the screen to the end. Awesome!
I search "Flamenco Take Five", and this gem comes up first result. I saw these two on Jools Holland back in either '06 or '07, then live at V Fest in '07. They were THE first artists I saw at a festival. Never fail to amaze me with their playing.
You are the reason why we’ll have a celebration this Mother’s Day Sunday. There is no end to what our Mother’s would do to make sure they’re children are safe doing well. Coming from a family of musicians (me included) I understand how the love of music has always somehow been apart of our coming together. Music heals and makes rough times better. God Bless
One of my favorite tunes. I had serious doubts about two guitars doing it justice, but WOW! That was excellent!!! Dave Brubeck’s still King, but wow! Thank you for sharing,

Just wonderful, and done differently from any other version. Dave Brubeck is smiling down upon you and the new harmonies that he would not have thought of for the most iconic piece of his life's work.

😃🥰They're in such rapport. When they play it's like they're mackin, just in complete sync and harmonious. I like it as much as the original. Awesomeness. Simoon.
Ahhh siempre es un gustazo escucharlos, tengo mi boleto en mano para el metropolitan, ojalá los pueda escuchar en vivo, Gaby, buenísimo tu comentario al final, son extraordinarios.
What a great song and an amazing version of this song. What a great way to start my Sunday morning. Love the camera work as well. Thank you for the healing music
One of those rare occasions where I can say 'Because we always need another version of Take 5' without irony or snarkasm.
As a teenager I watched in shock as the punk ass 11 year old alto player in our combo asked Brubek if he might play with him later in the day- to our shock he said yes and they tore down the house on this song

Well said. And the way they laughed at her clam on the final chord of the song made me like this version even more. 😊
Beautiful rendition of an iconic jazz piece!
Great term "snarkasm" a keeper 👍

Well done. A lot of mentions of Brubeck here, but let’s not forget Paul Desmond wrote this beautiful piece.
That's good too know. I Love the piece, and an outstanding job done here.

Yes. That was my first thought, too!
the little piece of paper that says “trust the process” in the back really nails it
2:50 the sweetness of the sound...
Wow, her right hand technique is amazing.
Her right hand technique? You are a dirty, dirty boy!
I remember them from Grafton Street, Dublin. You brought latin sunshine to Ireland, we miss you!♥️
I was just thinking to myself, she must be Irish because she's wearing a paddy cap.
Flamenco music is beautiful but please to mix it with jazz.
How could anyone have downvoted this? Brubeck himself would be astounded!
Brubeck himself 😂😂😂 Full Metal Jacket fan??
So would Desmond
I wish YT would just do away with down voting
They have to be accidental downvotes. That was epic! Words like awesome and incredible get thrown around a lot, but they genuinely apply here.

The brilliance in artistry and creativity is almost horrifying.
First time I am hearing a guitar version of this jazz piece, it is astounding! Thank you for playing it.
I started scrolling. But the drum solo on the guitar was stunning! I haven't seen this before. A worthy echo to what Joe Morello did!
De la grande cuisine ! Merci à tous les deux !

She's literally a genius. Many life times it will take us to understand.
Yoda like, you speak. So true. 👍
I saw them live just once, thus far: in Manchester England. They were outstanding!

Very nice.... interesting interpretation and well worth listening to
Love this song and ecstatic over this version. Saw them in Buffalo in 1968ish. They would love it, too! Innovation is a language they lived!
Thats so badass. I love it when others know this great song from 1955. Haha. Number Jazz Hit of that year. Too legit. A1
I’ve never heard a better version than one played by Brubeck... until now. Wow!
Creo que mis sentidos se están volviendo adictos a Rodrigo y Gabriela. Solo espero el siguiente dia para escuchar lo nuevo.
And they surprise me yet again... These two are just so damn good!
Dave Brubeck would be proud. Extremely proud.... ;-)

My second favorite jazz tune! ("So What" comes first.)
Interesting watching Gabriela do those big bends while strumming.
Such a joy to listen and watch these two
I grew up listening to the original. My dad was a huge jazz lover. I just love how she reacts at the end!
Your music gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and is a reminder there is such beauty in this world, no matter how dark it can get.
Absolutely BRILLIANT, May the both both of you and yours be blessed in this horrible time. Thank you for sharing your artistry.
I love the little pots on the shelf behind them. Trust the Process.
