- Johnathan Thurston has lashed out at NRL authorities, accusing them of being part of a conspiracy to get an all-Sydney Grand Final.
North Queensland co-captain Jonathan Thurston claims Queensland's State of Origin dominance was behind the refereeing howler which helped knock the Cowboys out of the NRL finals.
In a bizarre rant sure to attract some sort of sanction from the NRL, Thurston took conspiracy theories over the seven-tackle try awarded to the Sharks to a whole new level in Brisbane on Sunday.
The Test and Queensland pivot claimed NSW's lack of success was filtering through to retribution in NRL games, with the Cowboys on the receiving end of poor refereeing decision in two consecutive years in finals.
"You can see it, I'm not the only one that can see it, it's there for everyone to see," Thurston told reporters.
"While Queensland dominate at State of Origin level, NSW is crying out for something and they seem to be getting it.
"State of Origin is killing the game, no doubt.
"It's what the media wants, and fans in NSW want - South Sydney and Roosters grand final.
"That's what the game needs, they're crying out for it.
"If you're playing for a team outside of Sydney you're fighting up against it, no doubt about it.
"The boys feel it, we all feel it, it's tough."
Neil Henry suggested conspiracy theories against non-Sydney teams during Saturday night's press conference, with NRL head of football Todd Greenberg indicating he was unlikely to be fined for the comments.

usually the losing team will always find some fault with the ref, but a seventh tackle try can't be argued against cowboys got screwed plain and simple. I don't blame JT for being upset about losing that way

yeah, and melbourne get it too, its almost like for some games, the nrl tells the refs that one of the teams should win, its fucked and bias and you can see it in origin too, i've even seen games where QLD have won, but nsw got every leg up possible

Also keep in mind the NRL refs didn't have to, and hadn't been doing so, verbalise each tackle count so that's even more reason why the players should have been keeping their own track. Hell this wasn't the first miscount this season, back in April the Cowboys themselves had a 8-tackle set against Broncos due to a miscount. Given this fact that the refs are not infallible, and that players can potentially miss calls from the ref, it is only smart for players to keep some kind of track themselves
Nah it is true. With the hype of the current ladder in the game at the moment. There is a hype about the Souths winning the grand final with Manly or even Sydney meeting them at the end. I'm a Newcastle boy but seeing the Rabbits win is something I want to see

Just how much concentration do you think it bloody takes to keep track of the tackles? And keep in mind these are meant to be professional players who have likely played the game since they were kids having certainly played at times without having someone call out the count for them. It's their job to play the game and knowing the tackle count is an important factor for both teams, and not just for the last tackle either.

Seemed they counted when Feki (Winger) bumped off a player as a completed tackle, but he got up and ran again :S
Naa it wasnt 2 times because there was a run before that tackle but they didnt show it haha. At the start of the video you can see a guy push a couple of guys off then play the ball and then it went to the winger

Yes I expect them to know how many tackles are in the set themselves, relying solely on the ref is quite frankly stupid as the player may miss the ref's count due to the distance between them and/or background noise in the stadium (crowds aren't exactly silent you know). Hell since they are the ones actually playing, and are apparently professionals, they should be able to tell how many there have been since the start of the set, we're not talking rocket science here.
Instead of admitting they were wrong they changed the rules....

Seriously, you are expecting the players to count how many tackles they have made? What's the point of having referees than if your wanting the players to count the number of tackles. It is not the players job to count, it is the officials. The players should be able to rely on the officials to correctly count the amount of tackles instead of having to rely on themselves as well as playing the game!
You say the players must keep in mind what plays are going to happen, does the tackle count not affect this? Do teams not typically attempt a kick late in the tackle count to avoid a turnover? Does the fullback not need to field kicks from the opposition? Knowing the tackle count doesn't take any deep concentration.
And not once did I say the refs weren't at fault, but some of the blame is shared with the players for not appealing the try at the time as they try to do every other time.
Its worth having a sook about. A really bad mistake cost them a possible grand final, its totally worth a rant.
One good reason? How about the fact that they have to defend and the contribution of counting the number of tackles would be stupid on the behalf of referees. Honestly, this is the big league and players are running hard and fast, it is their main priority as a player to focus on tackling and allowing few metres as possible. Additional counting, would not allow the players to excel in defending as their focus would not principally be focusing on tackling.
As much as it’s wrong it’s also not the whole reason they lost it was six minutes in and there was plenty of time to turn it around

I remember that 2014, semi.. When at 30all with less than ten to go.. The roosters strip penalty when SBW loses the ball.. Then that BULLSHIT knock on call with a min to go... Would have been the biggest comeback in history after being 30-0 down... And don't forget when the cows got screwed over in the 2004 GF qualifier..

I have a lot of respect for JT, even though I go for nsw I don't agree with what he's saying about match fixing I just think the refs are fucking stupid sometimes+don't call him shit just because you don't agree with what he said once.
Oh please that is far from a good reason. The refs run throughout the entire game all whilst trying to keep a close eye on the ball and players themselves, hell you could argue they have more to concentrate on than a player and yet they still count the tackles. Since this is big league the players are obviously experienced which makes it far easier for them to keep track themselves which doesn't take much focus, especially since only a few typically get actively involved in a play anyway.
All I have to say is money talks, and Queensland seem to like slipping theirs into pockets. They won 6 fair and square in my books, we were outplayed; but, the last two years we had the deciding game ripped out our fucking hands by the referees and it's a disgrace to the game. Queensland is a disgrace to the game. We were the better team, but I guess we need deeper pockets.

Well then Cowboys must be in on the rigging, 13 of them on the field and not one of them appealed the try which shows they didn't even keep track of the count. Seriously 13 bloody "professional" players who can't keep track of something so basic and important as the tackle count themselves, how can you explain this? The Cowboys need to stop bitching about everyone else and just accept their share of responsibility in the count going unchecked as they could have taken to the ref when it happened.

Because obviously the refs can get things wrong, players know this better than anyone, and because a player can quite possibly miss a ref's call. You talk as if it takes some kind of extraneous mental concentration to keep track of the count, it does not and gets much easier with experience of which these players should have plenty of so really it should come as second nature to them, not to mention that only a few of the 14 players will typically actually take an active part in a single play.
At the end of the day , you should of scored more points on the board then complaining about the refs decision. Plus State of origin has nothing to do with this argument .
Wut. At the end of the day they DID score more LEGIT points than the opposition. The refs "decision" wasnt a decision it was a bona fide mistake that cost the refs their jobs the following week. There are refereeing decisions that you can apply your logic to such as the finals loss to the Roosters this year, what happened last year with the 7 tackles and the Manly game the year previously are an embarassment to the code and undermines the wins. The SoO comment wasn't smart though.
