I always have a medium and a light rod when pier fishing. I catch more fish on light tackle. It’s a better fight too. Not practical for the “keep-all” fishermen, but it’s the best method to catch finicky fish.
I've been using your product and have had some good results. A longer rod with more backbone and a heavier mainline and leader will help with those pilings.
Longer rod help keep the fish away from the pilings and heavyer line can take more damage rubbing against the pilings. My favorite rods were a 12 ft heavy action, a 10 ft. Medium action, and a 8 ft medium light action for the pier. And 12 and 15 ft medium /heavy action for surf fishing.
I've never understood why people use such small pound test. I use 10 lb on bluegill ect. 15-20 for bass, minimum of 20 for saltwater. People say oh well you won't catch that many fish because the fish can see/feel your line... I always catch as much or more than anyone who has ever told me that. Debunked I am proof that is just bs
Saltwater i use 10lb braid 20lb leader, I have 3 different rod one with 10, 1 with 20, 1 with 60. It all about what you are going for. Also lighter line equal better casting distance. Since I use mainly artificial
I am from nm. Went out to newport and went fishing on the peir. Thinking like you john. Took my catfish gear. Everyone was using light stuff. A lot of the fish are small. I cought something that weighed about 5 pounds and many people around acted like it was large. I have it to an older guy there. But i dont really know, been peir fishing twice in my life.
It may not be the style knot that you're tying, but that you're not getting enough loops in the UNI-KNOT and not leaving the tag end long enough. Plus - you have to test it. It should never fail with a whiting or any other surf fish. I use a uni-knot all the time and it never fails. I also use 12 lb. fluorocarbon leader (instead of 8 lb.) for pomps and whiting.
I use a proper fig8 knot or sometimes a uniknot, with minimum 3 coils formed in my knots; more coils with lighter lines! With lighter lines, I double line to tie my knots! Have to be careful in tying knots with doubled line, as coils must be together! My knots don't break unless I am hooked up into rocks etc! "Use suitable tackle to do the battle!" 🎣 Penn
Classic pier fishing. We take 20+ kids out every Wednesday on our local pier and around 50+ one Sunday a month. I've seen it all. I myself use 12lb line on an 8ft beefy rod but have crab traps out for bringing them up. I use a clinch or Palomar knot depending on what lure or bait I'm using. You lost some fish out there but bottom line....it's all in fun. Good day.
I never took aultra light rigs to a pier. Always had an 8 ft or larger rod and 15 or heavyer line at night i used 80 to 100 lbs line with steel leaders because of the possibility of catching sharks. I caught 6 blue sharks off the pier in Huntington beach calif. Give them to a Japanese man that made fish sticks and cakes out of them he gave me 4 lbs of fish cakes and sticks one night after get three sharks from me. He remembered geting the 6 from me before and some from my dad at the same time. He or his sons came by once an hour from 9:00pm until 2:00am collecting all kinds of sharks. We usually caught blue or black tip around 3 to 5 ft. long.
I fish 4lb test tied to 40-50lb leader with an Albright. I double the 4lb test to tie the knot. Then I double the 4lb line again and tie an improved clinch knot to the hook. I've caught 30lb snook on it and have never had a knot break. Ultra light should always be doubled when tying a knot. I dont consider 8lb ultralight. Fished 8lb mono all my life until braid got good. I fish 10lb braid and 20lb pink ande mono for leader unless I'm targeting snook or big reds..then 40lb leader..
Just use a uni to uni line to line knot instead of a swivel. Less metal is always good. I always struggle breaking off 12 pound Fluorocarbon when I get snagged.
I noticed you use those special long cast spools, I’m intrigued! What would be the best setup (rod, reel, line) to get the maximum distance casting a 1oz lure?
Any decent surf rod will damn near empty a spool with the right form.its not so much the equipment but more of how well do u load up the rod when casting.look into surf casting vids
Hey bro you need to get heavier tackle 20-30 lb test put a slide sinker snap swivel and a 15 lb floracarbon leader about 3’ long , use your favorite hook choice, and bait , ( didn’t see ya using fish gum) 🤔

Its great using as light a tackle you can get away with but you arent stupid. You lost so many fish from being under gunned and didnt change spots using such light gear. Its not the knot that was wrong. This was purely angler fault.
Hey great video on fishing and telling us not the piling not the piling. Don't get me wrong I love fishing videos. I don't know why someone would go fishing on a pier without a drop net. Also I didn't understand why you would fish the Ocean with such lite gear. Especially on a pier. Humm?🤔 Oh well it looked like a great day for fishing. Keep up the good work little bro.
I wouldn't never use a ultra-lite rod and reel with 8lb line at the beach on a pier. At least 30lb test fluorocarbon line with a swivel wire lead and ball bearing swivel hook attachment
Your needing a heaver line 15 pt minimal and a rod with more back bone not to mention a dock net. Been noticing how close to the shore you are why not just cast from shore the fish are behind the 1st wave brake eating all the turned up sand fleas and other shell fish turned up in the surf been catching fish that way for many years. Plus easier to pull them away from the pilings. Just my suggestion. Good luck.
Thanks for the comment, I have spent very few hours at the pier. So I can honestly say I don’t know what I’m doing. Sorry to disappoint you, I am no fishing expert as a whole just trying to become a better angler everyday. God Bless.
May the Lord bless you also! You have pier barnacles and possibly toothy fish. I’d try a longer pole with 12 lbs mono terminated by a snap swivel, then use various leaders, 18” Flouro or mono all pretied based on conditions and type of fish. You could even have leaders set up for sabiki bait rigs. With the snap swivel, all you need to do is change out the leader, for your various setups. And, more importantly, “If you confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (from the Lake of Fire).”- Romans 10:9.
You left your rod posted too high! I never let it stick up more than 3 guides or 18". If you do it's too much leverage to the fish if it runs on the take...then bye bye setup...
I use a snell knot for all my hook's. If I'm using fluorocarbon I'm using a snell knot 100% if I'm running mono I might use a Palomar knot but only on mono.
This might be an indication that you need to get a little bit heavier line. And I'm also sitting here thinking to myself why wouldn't you fish on a big day I lived in Hawaii for many years and was one of the top Lua fishermen and the big are the swells the better the fishing was where I went
hey man, you are bringing a knife to a gunfight, for that kind of action you need a bait shop on your card, you are outgunned, you can do better, with heavier equipment, this I know you know!!!!!
OK that cart you got is cool but you need a bigger pole and better line and a stronger drag tho I pull those fish up with no problem but cool catch up grade needed tho lol
Try over at the skyway fishing pier and fish the south pier, use live shrimp ,squid , or pilchards , if you get small pinfish free line them on a #1 hook have at least 20-30 test line , oh watch out for flipper the porpoise he gets hungry 🤣
8 lb on the pier-nope, not gonna happen, palomar or knot. I'll use 6-8 lb on one of the boats, on a dock-and I landed a 42 lb big ugly on 8 lb-but dealing with barnacles, oysters, height, it's 15 lb even on light reels and rod.
*Great rod **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I've been using it this spring as my primary rod and am very happy with the performance.*
Title should be " This is Why You Never Use Ultra Light Tackle on a Pier."
Right!! What a waist of my time !!! Booooooo 👎🏾
Why are using such light tackle on a pier duddddeeee
The light tackle is the reason I have done so well in previous videos at the pier. I will keep using light leader.
Honestly there no difference between ultralight vs medium action on the pier
I always have a medium and a light rod when pier fishing. I catch more fish on light tackle. It’s a better fight too. Not practical for the “keep-all” fishermen, but it’s the best method to catch finicky fish.
Pier = larger gear and at least 15lb line.
Agreed 👍
Ultralight has no place around those pilings.
“I can’t stop him!” Lol daaaaaahhhhh
Mantaplah sahabat strike nya 👍👍👍
Man seriously. Like that blue gill gear.
I've been using your product and have had some good results. A longer rod with more backbone and a heavier mainline and leader will help with those pilings.

i like 8lb on the beach, id never use that on the pier, its the type of fishing your doing.
@@hiddenfingerb2072 I agree!

More of a challenge using light test line
I pier fish in Michigan. When you stare at your rods they never go off! It's ALWAYS when your 50 ft from them or have your back turned. Never fails. 🤣
If all the fish are forcing you into structure wouldn’t a beefier rod and reel with heavier line work?
It may not be the style knot that you're tying, but that you're not getting enough loops in the UNI-KNOT and not leaving the tag end long enough. Plus - you have to test it. Hold the rod was the way I was taught.
Used a KP or ball race reel with no drag.
Gave the fish a fear fight .
Huge skill required
You guys are so lucky , over here in the UK we can go fishing for hours ,and not even get a bight, time after time we draw a blank
Palomar knot is the knot i use and will never let you down! Greetings from greece!

Hay lắm bạn ơi! like nhé!
Awesome! Three words: pier net for the fish and gloves for your hands!
I would never go on a pier fishing without having at least 15 to 20 lb. test and a medium heavy rod.

Heavier Leader Man!!! What you thinking? Knot is NOT the problem
Nope, they see it and you won’t get a hit.
Well at least you had some good bites! And like all of us you are always learning! Keep up the great work!
Heavier tackle???
You are so undergunned in your tackle selection!!!
👍. Almost lost a rod there yesterday. Things happen quickly. God bless be safe
Where is this pier located
Fish on!support here from Philippines
Right before you said it I said out loud "Palomar knot"😂
Just use a uni to uni line to line knot instead of a swivel. Less metal is always good. I always struggle breaking off 12 pound Fluorocarbon when I get snagged.
I've never seen someone get broke off so many times I like landing my fish
Dude I wish I was fishing all day everyday...
great spot I like this place very nice for fishing
God Bless my brother where is this located my brother
It's amazing, mister, the beautiful fishing spot and lots of strikes. Greetings fishing from indonesia

Try thumping the line the vibration of the line makes them mad you can reel them up

It was 100% my fault.
Can you describe the tackle you used?
If you're using 8 lb test mono or florocarbon, 10, 15, or even 20 lb test braid would probably work better.
Hey great video on fishing and telling us not the piling not the piling. Don't get me wrong I love fishing videos. I don't know why someone would go fishing on a pier without a drop net. The fish there can see heavy leader that’s why I went light and I forgot my drop net…..
I wouldn't never use a ultra-lite rod and reel with 8lb line at the beach on a pier. At least 30lb test fluorocarbon line with a swivel wire lead and ball bearing swivel hook attachment
Nice video!! strikes
Why don’t you use heavier tackle? Mono line? No leader?
This the reason I don’t use light gear. My usual is 50lb maxcuatro on saragosa 6k or Shimano Stradic FL 5k.
He still kept using the ultralight, even thought he knew it would not hold up? 😩🤦♂️🤷🙄

love the fishing but also impressed with the cart, any pictures please
I use the uni all the time and do t have any issues it's your gear man not the knot unless your not tying it right
This guy invented fishgum? I thought it would be someone that knew how to fish.
Thanks for the comment, I have spent very few hours at the pier. So I can honestly say I don’t know what I’m doing. Sorry to disappoint you, I am no fishing expert as a whole just trying to become a better angler everyday. God Bless.
I have never fished off a pier like that but it sure looks difficult!
great video!
Double UNI always!
DUDE...get rid that dinkey fresh water tackle!!! You're bringing a knife to a GUN FIGHT! Its the OCEAN. WRONG TOOL FOR THE JOB!

I use a snell knot for all my hook's. If I'm using fluorocarbon I'm using a snell knot 100% if I'm running mono I might use a Palomar knot but only on mono.

That was my hometown pier, Navarre Beach fishing pier.
@@FishGum Thank you.

I fish northern california. a beach day with 3 foot swell is a calm day
Why were you using such light line ?... I don't understand
Don't listen to the haters....I would have heavier tackle but that's me.
How not to use light gear on a pier. Its not the fish killing you, a true masochist.
Are those racks of paving stones in the back of your vehicle? Lol you ain’t kidding leaving work to go fish!! 🤣
Nobody's perfect, Dear. Polymer Knot.
This is why I HATE fishing on high-raised piers. The fish keep breaking loose before you can get them reeled up.
I cannot believe you put the fish in the box alive 😱
Would you have bled it out?
I would have dispatched it humanely
I was saying only yesterday so many north Americans have no respect for the fish they catch 😕 not all!! But a lot!
Good
