@@docsavage8640 I too prefer the original line up and style of the 1972-77 period. When i got Frenzy (there are two versions) i was a bit disappointed as they were in metamorphosis although there were some good songs in it. by the time they made "true colours" (and what a great album that was) they were a totally different band, i would have just liked a couple more "old" ENZ albums. But being realistic i suppose it was the only way they could achieve wider success. The only thing i really disliked was the sacking of the fantastic drummer Emlyn Crowther "because his drumming style wasn't basic enough".

What a classic! Being a resident of the United States, I did not know of the Split Enz until the 'True Colours' album was released. But as I've ventured back over the past year, I've found that I really dig their early stuff even more. 'Spellbound' is my new favorite...and I love the mellotron too!

As an American I've slavishly loved the Enz since '80 (hence I'm not as clueless about musical greatness from the far reaches of the planet!), but I'm really starting to appreciate their earlier material. This song is amazing. I'd delve deeper into description by adding that it's tastefully irreverent, quirky, empowered and yet enchanting. It combines several genres and then defies them all. The songwriting, arranging and delivery are second to none. Hell, they were leagues ahead of their time. Bravo!

Yes, Split NZ were way ahead of their time. Cannot think of any other successful band performing art rock before them. I am in utter amazement of their talent and they were always true to their style. Oh, those outfits and hair do's. Australia and New Zealand fans couldn't get enough, always performing to packed out crowds. How the poms and yanks could get it so wrong, dunno. Will always be a supporter even now at 61. The Finn brothers have more talent than any other sibling musicians, past, present and future. Makes me feel I want to live it all over again.

Yeah. I was 15 in 1976 and Aus rock then was bogan and blokey. But you didn't have to listen to the Ted Mulry Gang any more. There were these amazing guys from New Zealand. They had an interest in art and poetry. Like Bowie. And they were good musicians. They put Australian rock to shame.

Them later (around maybe 1975?) at a startling concert at His Majesty's Theatre this amazing song ... I remember it being longer than this, very dark, very intense. A great concert. A great band. We were 'spellbound' by their early performances in the 70s when they came from NZ. Mental Notes was an underrated album, and you can see why Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) produced their 2nd album after seeing them. In my view, much of Mental Notes was on a par with the 1st Roxy Music album (in both mood and musicianship).
