    Great point that muscle building when we are younger has a lot to do with hormones... as we age we need to supplement more. Makes sense! Less growth hormone as we age. Thx for this!

    My husband is losing muscle. He had an Esophagectomy, over fifteen years ago and is doing well. This is a new thing, so I took him in and demanded a blood test which was clear of any issues, and, now I am researching Leucine and muscle loss at eighty years old. Love these videos, and I am literally eating this info, lol. Thank you!

      Why bother. Tell him to eat the right foods try some carnivore diet or keto but always making sure you eat lean meat. High fat and low carb is great. Lots of salmon and egg’s especially organic and grass fed for everything. Stay away from milk as less than 6% of the population can actually digest milk. It’s also too high in sugar. The aim is zero sugar.
      After a month of that and doing gym go for hormone level checks. If they’re low tell him to get on TRT and HRT and some peptides if need be. A majority of supplements are a waste of time. Dr Layne Norton has said there are only three supplements worth taking especially value for money. WPI, Creatine monohydrate and caffeine. All the others are basically a waste.
      Probiotics are essential also. Mushroom extracts work great especially when paired with bone marrow. To supercharge them a small dose of psilocybin/Psilocin and LSD greatly increases the benefits of those superfoods. It creates and permanently establishe new neurons and neuropathic pathways to the brain, helps with lubricity for neurons to travel more efficiently and smoothly through nerves etc etc.

    Damned good points! I slacked down on BCAA's since I slacked down on resistance exercise, since all the gyms in my area went bankrupt, no thanks to chairman ping-pong's pet virus; but the point of higher need for BCAA's for sedentary seniors makes total sense. BCAA tomorrow morning!

    This supplement is a must when doing intermittent fasting👍 or anyone with autoimmune. BCAA could be added too, from my own experience recovery or any joint pain is reduced quite a lot✨

    Can you advise on protein/leucine intake for older people (I'm 66 years old) who are on Keto diet also doing intermittent fasting. I also do resistance training + walking. I usually just have bullet coffee in the morning then walk 6 miles . Around 1.00pm I do 30 to 50 mins weight and restraint band training about 3 to 4 times a week followed by a high protein shake which I incorporate Leucine powder. At 5.30pm I have high protein meal fish beef chicken and a salad.

    Good video I been supplementing with Leucine and BCAAs for a while now O may comsume 9 to 11grams of leucine a day. My recovery are fast. I have put on serious amount of muscle mass. It works for me I just turned 40.

      You need al the amino acids in your blood for bcaa to be helpfull

    One aspect of amino acids overlooked in this video is that BCAA or leucine alone are useless in promoting increased muscle protein synthesis. That requires the presence of all 9 essential amino acids, including BCAA and leucine.

    thank you for this informative vid! can bone broth substitute BCAA? as I believe bone broth has all essential amino acids and want to know if we can drink this after our meals to get a full spectrum of amino acids and possibly the amount of leucine recommended?

I really appreciated your podcast on the Food lies channel..I have a video up on my channel, Mannys Fitness Fortress about Kamala Harris and the Myths of Beef farming causing most of the green house emissions. In fact its only 14%...the other 80% is from industrial emmissions... I love your explanations about muscle and glucose and true benefits of Meat and vitamin deficiency resulting from many vegan diets.       You are probably talking about carbon dioxide. Methane is about 70 times more opaque to infrared than CO2, and so even though the amounts are lower, the amount of greenhouse is comparable to CO2's.
      And most people who know a little bit about this subject tend to initially be misled by the factoid that termites produce as much methane as cows. What they are missing is the fact that the world's current population of termites is far larger than it was centuries ago, and the biggest factor in this Rise Of The Termites is the way land is cleared for grazing farm animals in the Brazilian rain-forest. Vast tracks of virgin jungle are burnt to clear the land; but while the burning turns the above-ground parts of the trees into carbon dioxide, the parts of the tree below ground die and are finished by termites that basically turn most of that biomass into methane. Gas for thought...
      (I am neither a vegan nor a leftist, though, before you accuse me. Just saying because 90% of the times I touch on this subject, immediately the ad-hominem attacks and many other fallacies begin to be dispensed generously.)

    Hey, this is the first video of yours I have watched! Great info! I’m a little over half way through watching this video and am wondering if you had any thoughts on leucine on a ketogenic diet? From another source I’ve watched (Thomas Delauer) leucine spikes insulin, but on another source (The bumbling biochemist) leucine is ketogenic. So I’m a little confused, should I be concerned about consuming too much leucine (for example supplementing with whey isolate) on a ketogenic diet? Thanks!

      A insulin spike does not mean it isn't ketogenic. Keto just means that your body is using "fat" for fuel vs. using "glucose". An insulin spike can slow down fat burning by shuttling the nutrients into your blood stream back into "storage", but it does not switch fat for fuel off.
      One way to diminish the spike from something like whey protein is to consume it with a fat like butter. Consume it gram for gram. Say your whey has 24g of protein. Consume 24g of fat from butter. That 1/1 ratio is about 30/70 for calories. Almost an ideal keto ratio and (I hate to use this term these days) will "flatten the curve" significantly on that insulin spike.
      Using butter as your fat serves a two fold purpose. 1. It's nutrient dense. 2. More importantly, it's got a high stearic acid ratio. Stearic acid directly stimulates mitochondrial fusion AND will make your fat cells temporarily insulin resistant (good thing in this case - search "Fire in a Bottle" for the science). Bonus. It's delicious!

    Would be interested in the 'not supplement alone' details. BCAAs compete with leucine for uptake, if you take them together the leucine activation of mTOR is decreased because you have slower uptake.

    I'm 58 years old and have been working a non sedentary job for the pass 4 years after working a desk job for almost 31 years. I wish I did have a sedentary job so I can focus on my workouts. I was thinking about purchasing a leucine supplement to take daily.

    I looked into 1st phorm. It contains sucralose, which is as bad as aspartame. Sucralose is terrible artificial sugar. Why do you recommend this?

Instead of supporting pharma & drugs, she moves to poor quality products to make $$, which negates the message she's sending & the quality of her work. Now, I'm suspicious & wondering why I'm following someone that backs companies that can't even use something like Stevia or Monk Fruit. ATP Labs would be a good quality product to support. I love this doc, but I'm just worried now...

But when I checked to grab me some of what she recommended; I noticed the sucralose in the ingredients. I thought to myself isn’t she all about health and aging? Promoting something that messes with your body also makes me question her authenticity.

    I’m not here for any damned weightlifting. I’m not here for myself at this point. My parents have lost most of their muscle mass. One is is a skilled nursing facility and is too weak to do physical therapy. They feed her starchy “mystery food”.
    She is on dialysis 3 days a week. Yesterday, the dialysis place supplemented her with high protein because she’s severely deficient. She needs to get out of that place before the nursing facility starves her to death. My dad is in the hospital and if I don’t do something now to help, he will end up in a nursing home and die. Both of my parents are severely underweight. I came here after considering HMB. Now I’m thinking about getting them to try Leucine or bcaa. Hospital dieticians can only go so far to counsel….. Just searching for answers…..

    I weight-lift pretty heavy with high intensity 5 days a week following a push-pull leg-split routine. I also do 20-30 of cardio to warm up. I am conscientious of insulin spikes so is there a risk of using leucine post workout? Or does the production of glucagon cancel out the insulin spike risk? I am getting mixed signals from many health experts online. Any feedback would be appreciated.

      😂😂 20-30 min cardio to warm up for weighttraining is way to long
      there go’s alot of energy for the weighttraining
      Warming up is only to raise the heartbeat for more bloodflow to the muscle

    I have some high quality Leucine powder, but heck it won't mix in water, juice, coffee, or anything liquid. I have to put it in food. Any thoughts on mixing ? It's like mixing water and oil together. Question, he mentioned SOY, isn't that estrogenic? Not good for Men??

      Try mixing it into a full fat greek yogurt or cottage cheese. I have some stearic acid powder that doesn't mix well with anything but that.
      I take a single serving Fage 5% plain yogurt, add a 1/4tsp of cocoa powder, a little bit of pure stevia, and my powder (you'll have to experiment with the amount). Then slowly combine it all together until it's good an incorporated. Then enjoy :)

      I found the least awful way to take it is to take a small spoon and follow it with water. I find the Leucine from plant or fermentation to taste "softer".

    #DrGabrielleLyon The first thing I consume is a Tall Starbuck’s Late with half and half and one Splenda. No more than 60-90 minutes later I consume grass-fed whey protein and collagen peptides - that easily have 3.5 grams of Leucine (among the other essential amino acids). Does my body consider my Starbuck’s Late to be my first meal or my subsequent protein consumption? Thank you!

    Cottage cheese is a good source of Leucine, 1 cup: Contains 2.6 grams of Leucine.

    She lost me at 6:12 saying there is nothing wrong with a plant based diet. After 30 years on plant based diet I can say with 100% certainty that it is a very deficient diet and your health will eventually suffer.

      @@jgfergus wrong. The only necessary supplements are exactly what meat eaters should also supplement or is already being supplemented for, by giving them indirectly to the „farm animal“ such as b12. I onlyonoy supplement vitamin d, b12 and omega 3 algae oil. 👍

    #DrGabrielleLyon I saw video of a chiropractor (whom I respect) make an odd claim about undigested red meat in our stomachs. His claim was that the average human cannot digest more than 4-5 ounces of animal protein per meal. Part two of his claim was that for those of us that regularly eat meals with more than 4-5 ounce of animal protein - we are accumulating more and more undigested red meat in our stomach/colon. What say you?

      Animal based protein is complete protein and will provide the building blocks for connective tissue. That said, I eat a lot of whole food protein but I still take a collagen supplement. Collagen is made from the connective tissues themselves. It kinda goes along with adage of "like helps like". However, it's not a complete protein, it's lacking the essential amino acid tryptophan, but a 20 year study published in 2019 shows that "Significant Amounts of Functional Collagen Peptides Can Be Incorporated in the Diet While Maintaining Indispensable Amino Acid Balance".

      I mix it in my coffee every morning :)

I saw a guy and I was thinking 'quack', he said to massage the quads of the femur, it kinka worked for the knee, and although it's still a little funny, it is on the mend, Most of the problem in in the hips, and neither X-ray, nor MRI found a problem. I think it's a torn something in the hip flexor area.

    I get a little confused when you say how difficult it is to get to the amount of protein you need to eat. At 68 years old I can easily eat a ten ounce steak. Doesn’t that give me more than the 200 grams I need per day?

      10 ounces of beef are not 10 ounces of protein
      10 ounces of steak are roughly 283,495 grams of beef
      20% of the beef weight is the actual amount of protein you will get actually
      therefore a 10-ounce steak = 56,7 grams of protein
      You'll easily get at 200g of protein a day by eating 12 ounces of beef, 2 cups of milk, 1,5 cup of egg whites, 30g of whey protein (with those 4 you're already at 150g), the rest should be found in grains and other sources rather than animal products, maybe beans. By the way, if you eat lots of animal products also consume lots of fruits and veggies.

    Dr. Lyon - What evidence is there that this kind of leucine supplementation actually causes an increase in lean tissue (assuming proper strength training)? I have been suggesting to clients 1 gram of animal protein per pound of LEAN bodyweight - not body weight. FE: I have 160 pounds of lean body weight. I strive to get 160-200 grams of animal-based protein per day.

    3 meals a day? Damn that's some old school thoughts on functional eating. Most people aren't bodybuilding which would benefit from more meals a day. We are trying to live longer and healthier which requires fewer.
    Still fun to listen to though.

    Can anybody explain to me please, if the natural source of leucine comes from red meat or animal sources then how is it going to be beneficial taken leucine supplements powder that is derived from vegetables? Cause I even noticed in the leucine supplements bottles has a label that stated that is vegan friendly.? So I confused. Thanks 🙏

      It will be synthetically produced leucine, not 'derived' from anything natural. Which is usually the case with seperate amino acids.

      So then lucine is not coming from animals sources only , so we don’t really need to eat that much protein from muscle flesh to get leucine. But the miss Lyon said that animals protein is the way to go and high protein. Maybe she is working for the meat industry? I might be wrong 😑

    Sounds to me if we eat enough Meat and Diary Protein. We will get all of these needed Amino Acid Nutrients. So why supplement ? I do supplement with Creatine and Whey Protein powders.
