It looks like they've made no actual improvement over the original Inspire FT2 which I have. I have fabricated custom J cup style locks to lockout the bar at the top but the first rep of the first set and the very last rep still have to start from the bottom. This improved the use immensely and it's embarrassing that I can achieve this and they haven't bothered yet. Centr are just a money making venture.
I subbed when I started lifting in high school 10 years ago and even though I’ll never have a home gym I still watch these😂. You’re like grandfathered into my life for some reason because I’ve been keeping up with your basement Chronicles for over a decade for no reason lmao
Appreciate the shout outs. Frustrating that this appears to be essentially the FT2 with some aesthetic changes at a higher price point. The FT2 is awesome with just a few small tweaks needed. And the Pro could have been that. Darn. Good video dude.
I have had this for about a month and am very happy with it. I agree with your review overall, just a few comments: - You can upgrade the weight stacks by 50 pounds each. - You don’t have to slide out from under the bench press bar on Smith. From the bottom position, you rotate the bar into hooks and it lifts up easily with no weight on it. - pull up bar can be raised higher to 89 inch position - the belt squat strap is also useful to attach to the overhead pulleys for weight assist on them. Put them under my feet. - agreed, I’m surprised they did not change that mechanism with the Smith bar from the first generation to be able to more naturally un-rack at top of the movement with safeties at bottom. It doesn’t bother me starting at the bottom of the movement on bench press and military press, bent rows, but I don’t love it on squat. - to compensate, with bar at top of squat, I over-rotate it forward into hooks to lower it, and then engage the weight while quickly accelerating the squat up from bottom position while rotating the bar/wrist into neutral position at same time to release it and set the safeties in one fluid motion. Ie not really much pause at bottom. Therefore, not a deal breaker for me but totally understand how it can be for some who go heavy on squats. I do really like using the smith bar as a leg press laying flat on my back on the bench though. -overall, for the amount of variety it gives me in a compact space, very solid feel, the trade-off for sub optimal Smith bar with squats is worth it.
Appreciate the feedback. Some very good points. -For the added 50lbs stacks I assumed so, but they need to get their stuff together b/c you'd think they'd list that on the product page (they don't). -I kind of covered this in the video, but that's very annoying IMO and not how a true smith machine works. -I knew this as well but again it's not detailed in the manual (at least the one I have) and it doesn't just raise it up, it pivots it up and puts them at a poor angle IMO. -Good tip, don't need the assistance so I didn't think of that. Overall for me it just doesn't do it justice calling it a smith machine. It's king of like my issue with the monolift attachments not acting like a monolift.
@@BasementBrandon Don’t disagree with you. At the end of the day, if you are going to get this unit, I think you just need to be comfortable that you’re going to start your Smith movements from the bottom of the lift on the first rep.
Glad to see a non-demo video review of this but given how quickly Inspire iterates on products, you can expect a V2 in about 7-10 years. Inspire, Hoist, TuffStuff(RIP), and Bodycraft are all kind of in that old school dealer model and rarely do quick updates the way the new home gym players do. Hoping Centr has plans to change that but not holding my breath.
Centr are just a money making venture. Don't expect anything from them. AFAIK Hemsworth sold the company and he had basically zero input in making the app anyway.
I’ve had the Inspire (now Centr) SF3 functional trainer/smith machine for 2yrs now and love it. Same type of 1:1 conversion via the lower cables and I find that pulling the pins so it’s on minimum weight makes it fast and easy to pop them off the hook. Mine has been totally reliable with minimal maintenance. You can also snag them at times VIA Costco for a steal. My only complaint is that the SF3 is too short for some movements. Hands down a massive improvement for the home gym.
@ The SF3 is a more reasonable option both in size, capability, and cost. Costco has had them recently for 2k and even $1700. I think if you are really looking for a legit Smith you’d really like the BOS option. Heck, Kaevon would probably send you one to review. He sent one to Gluck and you know how much of a hack he is 😉😆.
I know you aren’t keen on the squat aspect of this but have you tried using the safeties via the described method in Inspire’s vid? 3 min mark. ruclips.net/video/nKP4-Bl-FSA/видео.htmlsi=Byk1Tceuvxnqgu17
Legendary one take, especially at that length! I'm not personally a fan of smith machines, but it seems well thought out as a functional trainer. As you pointed out however, it could use some improvement in the smith machine area. That is one of the challenges of combining multiple functions on a single machine - there are going to be compromises.
I have the FT2 so when I saw this I was excited, thinking maybe they fixed the damn Smith Machine. They seemingly made the same damn machine, but added the rock grips and additional storage. It has the same shortcomings of the FT2 in pretty much the same identical ways. Disappointed in them. I appreciate you sharing your review for sure.
The pull up bar can be adjusted to a taller position. It looks like you have it set at the lowest position in this video. Also, the weight stacks can be upgraded with an additional 50 lbs. on each side. Not sure if this was talked about. Grabbing both of trollies with the bar and moving them to the bottom range of motion/starting position, is a better way to start each set.
Yes it can but it’s awkward in my opinion. It’s a bolt design so it’s not easily adjustable and instead of just going up straight, it just pivots, which makes the grips feel out of place.
I was looking for a Smith Machine type attachment for my Power Rack, and researched all the reviews from Bells of Steel's new attachment, Bullet Proof's VTS, and some other gimmicky brands and I just was not sold on any of them really. Yes, they are ok if you just want something somewhat versatile, but I wanted something more reliable, so I purchased a stand alone Smith Machine from Gymleco (281 with counterbalance). Yes, it's expensive, and yes I have to wait 6 months for shipping from Canada (3 months now) also I had to pay shipping costs as well. Your review was very good, I sure hope you don't hit your head on that bar ducking underneath it all the time, and yes they absolutely have room for improvement with the Smith Machine attachment, but seems like you will enjoy your functional trainer.
Totally agree the smith machine starting at the bottom sucks. The SCS version is better about this but then you have free weights. This mostly bothers me with squats but bench press is fine using your “trick”. I just twist it forward to move it up and out of my way after a set, then drop it back down when starting another set.
@Frennemydistinction eh it’s a trade off I’m willing to make to have a compact, full body gym basically. It’s not ideal but you learn to work with it. I do squats on it 2x a week with no issues
looks really nice and about the same price as 2 voltra1. So which do you prefer teh voltra or the Center pro? Also how are those Xmaster plates holding up. Does finish hold up well with use?
If I had to get rid of one it would be the FT2 pro. For my use the Voltras does the same things as the FT2 but also has a lot more features I’d utilize (settings/metrics/footprint).
I have fabricated a hack for the smith machine on my Inspire FT2 to lock it at the top (on all but the first rep). The same hack should work for this version too as its basically identical in operation. If anyone is interested let me know and I can send you some pictures if you're handy ar fabricating.
I think I prefer my cheap Syedee smith machine for $500. I think when I upgrade I’ll look for a true rack with all components. The new bells of steel smith add on looks interesting to add to a Rep Ares system.
Wouldnt the voltra attached to a rack replace so many of these exercises with even more options? Obviously not the smith machine but alot of the exercises are just doubles of machines you already have such as pullups and low rows. Im thinking of splurging on the dual voltras in the future to have the functional trainer exercises.
I think the free swiveling pulleys are going to be the tricky part to replicate since the Voltra doesn’t move like that even with the rotator adapters. Voltra probably better for pure pressing/pulling movements vs fly patterns where you have a lot of side to side movement. Maybe someone with two can chime in
