Thank you for providing such an incredible resource for artists and creators and helping us all create one of the most important things our broken world needs right now, music :). So many people like myself who don’t quite have enough $$$ to pay someone to produce an entire album, so you alone are helping us bring our art into the world for those willing to work and learn on their own. Thank you again for your amazing lessons from Seattle :)
So I finally got to see one of your videos after saving them for later all the time. Aaaaaand now I subscribe! (doin' it right now....click!, done!) Compression is that part of the process where I think we all, at least once or twice....or thrice... end up questioning ourselves, who we are and why we're in this world...it's beautiful if you think about it..hehe. First of all, nice video! you did great explaining it (now that I have a better understanding of it, I can say that you explain it very good). I have a question that it's not related directly to the process itself but to the fact that I dunno why on earth my compressor does not display the "Gain Reduction" decibels at the bottom like yours does!! What version of Ableton are you using? Cuz I'm using 10. Thanks!!
This is easily the best explanation of how to use compression that I've come across online! You explain things so well and make it so easy to follow! What a great teacher! Thank you
OMG girl you are so funny and make this such an easy and understandable subject.....well all of your videos actually. Keep doing what you are doing, we are loving it! BTW I subscribed cause I dont want allso to spell Attack wrong like in the min 8:50 :)
@@LNADoesAudioStuff and you should think of it as a positive thing! Your vids are more interesting like this and full of suprises! Ist greta lik dis, turst me!
Vengeance's VPS Scope plugin is ace for measuring compression as it gives you the incoming waveform as well as the spectrum and saves having to freeze and flatten so much. I think it was free with a copy of Computer Music or some other music tech magazine, would recommend! Saves a bag of time when fiddling with compressors
What I am working on right now is meditation tracks to help people relax annd/or sleep. What I have noticed about these kinds of tracks that I have listened to myself that REALLY annoys me is inconsistent volume. When I am trying to sleep, I don't need to get all rested and then have to adjust the volume of something. I need it to stay about the same volume throughout. So maybe this is telling me the attack of the compressor shoult be fast? So that the volume of the whole thing stays pretty consistent.
Dope video.I learned some stuff, I understand compression pretty well, I continued watched to listen to you say threshold. I love the way you say threshold. You are awesome.
Subscribed from following your Reddit post. Since I'm learning Ableton (still on 10 Live Lite with my small MIDI keyboard), the time I'll spend learning with your help and those of others will allow me the luxury of saving up, enabling me to upgrade my version.
you are soo 6eautiful.. off topic 6ut , lol. its really awsome learning what i need to learn from the prettiest girl iv ever seen.. : * and how you talk is COoL
Nice video! I like how you explain things! I still dont understand everything because of my shitty attention capacity but definetly im going to add this video to my producer playlist and watch it in the future ! Thanks!
Thanks, wonder- and insightful explanation. One thing I didn't understand is why the blue, compressed track was frozen and flattened before listening. Was it just to conserve CPU cycles? Because if I understand correctly there shouldn't be an audible difference before and after freezing and flattening.
When it comes to the make up gain, is it best to use your ears to get the correct level when a/b ing? or should you use your eyes to just match the peak level exactly where it was? great videos btw iv been watching a couple of weeks now 😁
How do you feel about RUclips placing an advertisement in your video wherein the main actor literally points at your video and tells people that it won't teach them what they want to know? It seems underhanded on the part of RUclips. The almighty dollar wins out over quality instruction....
To be clear, I love your videos and you are a wonderful presenter. I just don't like the ads that RUclips overlays that discredit the content that you're working hard to monetize... For them....
so blessed to be accompanied by you + your teachings amongst these lonely + cold quarantined nights. (!) cannot thank you enough for all the knowledge sharing ;; is it better to put compression on each individual track or is it okay to apply on master track ? (or does it depends, depends-depends.)
Heyy so glad you enjoy the videos! And hah yes sorry... it depends! Ask why you would want to out compressir on something and what are you wanting to achieve with it ☺️
The tutorial is incredible but I can't understand the way you explained the Knee, at the end of the day I couldn't figure out if it's some kind of Attack or a Dry/Wet. In specific I am confused by this part between 10:15 and 10:21 (maybe it's my bad english)
At 6:24 can you explain how you made your voice harmonize so well? I have been looking everywhere and find multiple diff ways but yours was awesome! How'd you do that????
hello mam ,for me in the compression it was not showing the gain reduction meter but for you it happening ...im using the ableton 10 ...why it happening like that ???
Do you even have to use compression? It seems that everyone just uses it because they think they have to for some reason. Particularly in electronic music a lot of the sounds are already compressed etc. If I like how my music sounds then what is the actual purpose of it?
@@LNADoesAudioStuff so vocals are probably the most important or if you record acoustic music etc or if you want to create a certain effect like sidechaining etc?
@@bsways Again, depends on what you want to achieve with it. If you want your vocals sound closer and bigger then compression might be needed :) When it comes to compression, it always "depends" I recommend checking out my Mixing course from my channel. I explain more there :)
That rule of thumb for make up gain makes no sense whatsoever. It should probably be ”use the amount of gain reduction as a guideline” but i would still advice to just use your ears to match the volume.
@@LNADoesAudioStuff My point was that ratio does not imply how much make up gain you need cause it works in a relation with threshold. If you sharp some peaks with 20:1 ratio, you probably don’t wanna add 20db make up gain. Good vid otherwise!

DO YOU MIX ON THOSE HEADPHONES ?
👍
👍☺️
let me get this straight, so if I'm going for 2 dB of gain reduction and set the ratio to 20:1 I need to set the make up gain to 20dB? seriously?
Depents on the threshold and signal.. but if not sure that’s a guideline that can work especially with lower ratio amounts
those are yamaha hs5 or hs7 monitors?
Hs7 :)
