- The Tyra Banks Show - ''African American women's hair'' (Recorded May 12, 2009, WWOR)
We're getting to the root of the African-American "good hair" phenomenon. Find out how hair impacts the community's culture and even self-esteem.
Good hair is healthy hair. The thought that good hair the silky, straight, or maybe even very loose curls is a slave mentality kind of thought.
Facts
Thats why the black community ripped poor blue ivy to shreds and called her hair nappy
@@lilmizzije that's sad 😪
🔥🔥🔥
Tyra's hair looks beautiful in corn rows
Yes It Is
+Mark Charlton Thats whan you are lucky enough to be beautiful. She can wear a sack and just shine!
She would be beautiful bald. Can't make that girl unattractive.
Mark Charlton
It looks too masculine for her. Her features are too feminine for corn rows.
Alexandra Kubetin masculine? Sorry I totally disagree. She is a strong beautiful woman
thank god for the natural hair community on youtube now I can proudly say I love my hair and I love being black ☺
Yayy!! I'm not even black and thinks your natural hair is gorgeous, people just need to embrace who they are.
💯
Are you sure about that? If you truly "loved" being black you wouldn't have to tell yourself that.
LMFAO
@Juicy Smooyay imagine someone saying "I love being white." They'd be called a racist
Natural is what's beautiful.
Tbh all of us black women and actually every ethnicity even need to stop thinking about how others will perceive us, it's how we perceive ourselves❤️
Good mindset, peace
Especially in an eurocentric world. The idea that the whiter you look, the better you look, has to be ended.

It’s really funny how different what I considered “good hair” to be. I am an Indian girl with wavy hair (not straight but no distinguishable curls) who grew up in nyc and went to school with mostly 90% white people. At first I used to straighten my hair so it looked neat but I always wanted curly hair that had volume. It was a rarity among my peers and noticeable so I would try to make my hair curlier by braiding it over night and then putting root lifting spray on and holding my head upside down for 5-10 min. I use to be jealous of people with Afro’s since their hair naturally stayed up and in place.
I think it’s funny how we always want what we don’t have and end up demeaning ourselves as we grow more and more insecure.
That's a word
I rolled my eyes when I watched this. I'm pro-do-whatever-you-want-with-your-hair, but those women with relaxed hair sounds like they don't have the slightest clue of how to take care of their natural hair. If they knew, it would never be "nappy" or "matted". It's ironic, because every natural girl I know has hair that's softer, thicker, and well-kept than most girls with relaxed hair. Just because your hair is kinky doesn't mean you just let it go. You groom yourself just like you would if your hair were relaxed. Same goes with any other culture. Sounds like they're just being lazy to me.
They may not be lazy just as you said, they are misinformed. Most of us never managed our own hair without chemicals and heat. First step is to get rid of the comb! Shocking but true.
Finger comb and detangle.
Tyra is so freaking beautiful
I think black women with theirs natural hair are stunning! I am from Germany so the only girl I can refer to was the one black girl in our class, and when she got her natural hair cut and really nicely cut...damn, that was an eye opener...even out teachers complimented her on it, she looked so stunning!
I am so glad that in 2014 we have embraced more naturalistas!!!
Raquel Rene' 2019♥️
I agree.
Unfortunately, we went from straight, to natural, to wigs.
@@ruthav8580 not true! Lmao the natural hair movement is literally huge. Less wigs and weaves
@@ruthav8580there’s no problem with wigs
When it comes to my natural hair i always get positive feedback from white people, but from black people never! Thats so sad!

Seems we always want what we don't have. I'd love your hair. My hair is naturally straight, and it's incredibly boring!!
I think natural Black hair look very nice. If you want a good role model for Black natural hair look at Misandey from Game of Thrones. She had pretty Afro hair and also knew 19 languages.
Kayla Davis ... there’s black people in Europe
Me too! They were way more intrigued about my hair than my own family

I am white and I have curly hair and I do not have tight coils or anything by any means but even just having curly hair is such a hassle, and for all the women of color out there who are scared to show their natural texture, i just wanna say that i think its fucking beautiful! and I have serious respect for the amount of time that it would take to take care of your hair and moisturize it and I hate that society shows very little woman with tight coiled textures because when I see a woman walking down the street with hair like that I'm literally in aw! i love it so much
Aw thanks 💖. I'm thinking about wearing my fro tomorrow
you are not helping them. they are going around looking like unmade beds and you are cheering them on. People do not want to hire someone whose hair is five times the size of their heads. not good for business and anybody can see why. Kids at school can't see around these selfish people with gigantic nasty fro's.. and THAT is not right or fair. but like always they throw a fit and threaten riots or law suits or BOTH.. because they cannot be told to follow the rules the rest of us do. As for you thinking it looks good the bigger it gets.. Girl. you need to rethink what you think is pretty....
Sharon Palmer maybe you need to revaluate your life and get your racist ass some help, don't reply because it's a waste of your time.
well then keep on encouraging them to their own demise. This is a nation of rules and laws.. either you follow them or you go somewhere else. They need to stop forcing their body problems on the rest of us. The dreds smell literally dreadful.. and sickening besides resembling poop attached to ones head and you can't see around a head of hair a mile wide. There is no racism to that just fact.... just sayin you are not helping them to assimilate at all.. and the number one rule in America is assimilate or be considered a problem... .too late for that though isn't it...many of them ARE THE PROBLEM.. and people like you.. who enable and encourage them to buck the rules and laws.. are worse..Stephanie Gour
Fries N, I'm sure your hair is completely beautiful, pay Sharon no mind, she sounds like a waste of life. Just continuing loving your beautiful hair sister
Natural and proud!!!
I love the dread lady!!! Speak to these insecure women
all of them on the stage were insecure. some narcissists. you, an insecure bully. transparent heaux.. grown women should act more grown and secure. practice makes perfect.

I didn't Ike her at all. I am always for knowledge but she was angry out the gate. I was immediately turned off
@@rhondeenpitts567 she was angry because the producers talk bad about the host off scene. That happens in reality shows to this day. So I don't even blame her. The producers instigate. Simple.

@@RaZeRbLaDeZ is that bad?
I have natural hair and I am black. I do get complements on my natural hair, but sadly I find myself getting complements from people who aren't black about my natural. Now if I straighten my hair, then I will get a lot more complements. I don't understand it all. I live in a small southern town where a lot of brain washed stereotypes have been imbended in people's lives for YEARS. So here, straight hair is more praised usually among the older generation, but natural hair is ignored and looked down on.
*compliments... lol
Same. It's sad when black women with natural hair get the most flack from our own people.
if you straighten it and it's long you get weave checked.
Self hate and white worshipping
There is something everybody around the world must understand: GOOD HAIR IS HAIR ON YOUR HEAD, PERIOD.
;)
THANK YOU!
Well said😅😂
Tell that to all the bald white men in the world lolol
"White girl flow"???!!! haha I'm a white girl and my hair isn't straight and doesn't swing like that .My hair is puffy, wavy and has a tendency to be "big" and frizz. It has never looked like the smooth straight hair extensions of celebrities.I used to spend a lot of time and money straightening my hair and trying to make it into something it isn't. Now I accept it for what it is and just try to keep it healthy- and the longer it gets the better, cuz the weight of it pulls it down and makes it more manageable. As women we are almost never happy with what we've got and want what we don't have. Accept yourself and accept others and realize that there are many ways to be beautiful
You just sound dumb. Your hair can be "puffy", frizzy, "wavy" but it still sways when you move your hair. The girl means black peoples hair doesnt really move. Frizzy and wavy is not even close to kinky so just stfu.
Black hair moves 🙄 especially when it is long. Stop it
"White girl flow" in reality is more like "Asian girl flow".
Ever since I was young(er), I always thought straight hair was boring. I never preferred a white girls hair to my thick, big curls. Straight hair? I still don't see what's so great about it. It's kind of boring to be honest.
Black girls: We need to take pride in our hair. It's big, thick and beautiful. I wouldn't ask for any other kind of hair.
Haha, I'm the same, and people would always harass me at school for not straightening it! (but I'm white, my hair just doesn't stay straight) and I love my hair!!
U can be proud of ur curls, but it is really necessary to put down ppl with straight hair? Ppl with straight prolly dont really care anyway. But I'm just sayin' real secure confident ppl have no need to put down others. I see straight hair girls say curly hair is pretty all the time, just to be nice.
MrKockNoker Sorry, I wasn't trying to put anyone down. It's just how I've felt throughout out my entire life.
MrKockNoker Trying too hard for what... haha
MrKockNoker Okay, haha sorry. But I was just saying that because other black girls tend to be more insecure about their hair and prefer others to their own. I just think it's kind of sad.
"Good hair" is healthy hair. Healthy hair is catering to its needs that you as a African, Asian, or whatever your ethnic makeup and background determines is needed. The thing that a lot of people don't seem to get is that "Good hair''' or as I said, healthy hair, looks different on everybody. Not all "good hair'' is smooth. Not all ''good hair'' straight. "Good hair" is healthy hair for your genetic makeup or background.
im white and I don't even know what " white girl flow" is lol.
Exactly. It makes me wonder what kind of flow do Asian people have then, if that's 'white girl flow'
Ariana69 me to
🤣
White girl flow? A lot of black girls can't do that? I went natural and my hair moves just the same whether it's wet out dry if I take care of it. I have problems with dealing with my hair cause it's thick but I still love it. She don't love herself if she saying all that.
Black peoples hair is beautiful. They should never feel bad about it. The color and texture is awesome.
u know its sad black people dont see their own hair like u see it.
Thank you. I personally love the differences in us humans. It's fun.
I agree with you. I'm black and my hair is natural. I'm proud of it too.
Nice.
mouthofthesouth83 I am Puerto Rican and my head hair is straight, but my facial hair is coarse like a black man's facial hair. It is the nature of things. I love the diversity of my family tree.
I think natural hair is beautiful and professional. It makes you seem more confident and at ease with your self your body. It also gives of the feel of you being wiser, level, grounded and down to earth
it makes me sad to hear that black women feel as if they cannot wear their beautiful natural hair because they fear being perceived negatively. i think there is something so beautiful about the black chick on my bus who has an awesome fro - you wouldnt believe the amount of guys who hit on her either. embracing your natural side no matter what color you are gives you an automatic cool factor and sends waves about your confidence. :)
All hair is good hair, God created them all.
This is why I decided to go natural. I don't want social media to define what beauty is. Why do so many black people define hair beauty by straightening our hair? For the same reason black women don't want to get darker and want to be light skin. Beauty is defined by features associated with white women. I'm going natural to tell the world that I'm proud of my natural features and I don't give a fuck who doesn't
What is ironic, Tyra promotes the natural corn rolls in this episode. , but 99% of the other episodes she has her hair permed and straighten
+Juz rhyme Just because her hair is straightened doesn't mean it's permed. Black women can achieve straight hair with the use of heating tools (blow dryer, flat iron) without the chemicals, as do white and spanish women, as I have many friends of varying races that straighten their hair almost everyday. She said her hair was natural
Tamara S Spanish women are women from Spain, who are white, given that Spain is in Europe. The word you seem to be looking for is "Hispanic" or "Latina".
Her hair isn’t permed 💀 but she does wear it straightened most of the time
And weaves...
Or wigs...
I love that woman in The pink shirt. I’m a hair stylist and I do kinky texture hair all the time. I always ALWAYS tell people that natural hair is soooo attractive, it just needs a style and the person needs to know how to keep it styled.
I remember watching this when I was around 7 or 8.. She woke me up by making me realize, instead of changing my hair I should embrace it. It’s 2020, now I learned how to love myself, my skin, and my hair!
As an African in Africa I want to know what she means by "African combs" @ 5:59
Kiersten Willis
actually its not silly bc there are combs that are made for detangling nappy hair just search on google images
Kiersten Willis I saw a documentary that was talking about the history of black hair from africa to today, and before slaves were taken to the americas, apparently there were traditional combs that were specially made for every person. The design symbolized what tribe the owner was from and everything. The modern afro pick was modeled after and designed from those combs. I forgot the name of the documentary, so maybe she's referring to that?
Kiersten Willis Yeah, probably
I don't know about y'all but I think those cornrows were kinda cute. Why did I stop wearing braids?
eeeewww! no they werent
MrKockNoker To each his own.
I agree, they suit her really well.
How is Tyra fake? She's trying to portray her topic and show people
I love Natural Hair.
Black women Plz have confidence in ur hair and feel good about what u naturally have
I love my natural hair. There's so much you can do to it. I wish people could just be happy with the type of hair they were born with
This show is SO exploitative of black women and was obviously made for the amusement of white people. Way to go, tyra. Thanks.
Truth hurts. White women are more satisfied with their natural look than black women. Black women want hair like white women. White women want hair like white women.
I have noticed, as a white/black young woman who just ties her hair up in a ponytail every morning, that I'm actually something of an odd duck among the other girls at my school with African hair. There are some girls with natural hair like mine, but most of them kill their curls to make their hair pin-straight. I like natural hair, myself, and I don't like that it's almost expected for black and biracial women like me to pour so much money into their hair.
The black hair community has come a long way since these shows. And I'm super happy & proud of our efforts! 😊😊😊
4:57, it’s disgusting how she assumed Tyra had loose curly hair, when she NEVER saw Tyra’s natural hair. She DEFINITELY wouldn’t have assumed that, if Tyra had been darkskinned.
since I went natural....I am happy...I love my dreadlocks...I wash them everyday..its been 4 years and loving it..thank you tyra for this show.love form kenya
Wow! I'm natural and have been so for little over a year. I didn't become so for others, I did it for myself because I was tired of paying to get my hair relaxed and styled. This is what she needs to realize, you don't do it for others, you do it for yourself. If anything, I have gotten more compliments from other races with my natural hair than with my relaxed because I can do much more with it now. I wear afros, curls, twists. My hair holds those styles better. Love what you GOT!
are you still natural? even if you’re not, im proud of you for being natural in a time when it wasn’t easy
Dear lord i hope convos like these still dont go on. Those two women sound so...WRONG. I cant understand why both sides just cant say " hey both styles are beautiful and everyone should choose whats best for their aesthetic and lifestyle, but also recognize who they are and accept themselves" Is that so hard? Can we be a LITTLE politically corrrect. (i miss that)
Man I accepted my self at like 15 years old shaved my whole head to re hrow my afro. My thlughts were"Caucasions dont perm theyre hair. neither do Hispanics so why do I? If I want my hair straight I can just use some heat"
***** i try to say that this video is a complaining of black americans towarts white people about racist things ,but them self use racist terms ,the europians start to use those terms ,and thee used causian for whites ,but that is rong cause it is the name the russians gave to the chechen people because the lived in the caucesoi mountens ,and thee are caled caucesus, so dont use that term for white poeple ,and dont imetate the europians with those things ,it makes you a hypocryt
Does it matter what people called the other. IN MY AREA USUALLY Caucasians don't have to have a perm to make their hair STRAIGHT and Hispanics don't EITHER so I am saying why should I?? I am sure you have common sense and I am sure people knew WHAT TYPE of perm I was referring to.
I wasn't directing the irritation at you. The irritation was for him. I am telling you what I meant. Its can be irritating when people are trying to give me a history lesson like it matters. In my area we call it a perm whether to have ur hair straight or curly. I never said even suggested that I knew what was going on in their heads. I was just saying they usually don't need the perm they use heat. I rarely come across anyone Hispanic or Caucasian they uses a perm to straighten their hair. I was speaking in general.
I am not my hair , i am not my skin , i am not your expectations no, i am not my hair i am not the skin, i am the soul that lives within

it's quite hypocritical how this is the only episode where she decides to go all natural and not wear a wig or weave...
As a dominican with coarse hair, I know exactly what it feels like. My mom relaxed my hair since I was 12 and my hair wasn't even that coarse, it was just extremely curly but it shows how ignorant my mom, aunts and grandmas were... now we're all natural, thankfully the DR is known for their amazing hair products and I've been able to flaunt beautiful curls and pin straight hair alike without having to torture my locks with terrible chemicals. I recommend to anyone to look into our hair routines!
I have mad respect for the lady in dreadlocks 😍
1. So many people, (women and men, from all races and walks of life) spend so much time worrying about superficial beauty. Real beauty truly comes from within. We all want to look our best but having a "good heart" is REAL beauty in the eyes of God. If people worked on their inside as much as they did their outside the world would be a better place.
2. God made different kind of flowers, roses are my favorite but I think all flowers are uniquely beautiful. Just like the different flowers, I see all races of people different but uniquely beautiful. DIFFERENT DOES NOT MEAN BETTER IT JUST SIMPLY MEANS DIFFERENT. "Nobody" has a monopoly on beauty. My advice to you all is no matter what race you are from love yourself, IF YOU believe that you are beautiful THEN YOU ARE.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to see this show aired in 2017..we have come so far
Tyra is the LAST person on hearth who should talk about this topic. She is such a hypocrite....
So glad that you used your platform and influence, especially as a woman of color and as a top tier fashion icon, to bring light to this subject. Thank you Tyra
I have what black people consider "good" (type 3) hair & the ONLY people who teased me about it were other black people. A chemical has never touched my hair & I'm fine with that. I'm neutral on the topic. I agree that you're not any less black if you wear a wig/weave or use a relaxer/curl softener & you are not revolutionary if you choose to wear your hair the way it comes out of your scalp. I do straighten my hair (with a flat iron) from time to time, but as Tyra mentioned, getting my hair done plus the extra money they want to charge me for the length gets expensive lol I've had an Asian woman walk past me & say, "Nice!" & even a white professional athlete compliment me - with my hair curly. Like someone else commented, it's other black people who make black women feel like they need to "do something" with their hair.
It’s really funny how different what I considered “good hair” to be. I think it’s funny how we always want what we don’t have and end up demeaning ourselves as we grow more and more insecure.
this really pissed me off because she said European lifestyles like there aren't black europeans.
Yes they are black people in euro countries and white people in I guess what I would call african like countries. Just because we are black doesn't not mean we are not part of a culture. In America why does she think she has to have straight hair in a euro type country, that has nothing to do with the culture! There are white people in africa and yet you dont see them trying to turn there straight hair into afros. So to sum it up European is a culture not a skin color or hair color,at least now. FYI america rightfully should go to native americans.
She said Euro-centric.
Yes but the USA is a Western country, the country was established by white Europeans, the religion, language, culture, form of government all derived from Europe. So we do live in a 'Euro-centric' society.
Also... I'm Greek. Which IS in Europe. So I have curly hair(not afro). I don't understand how people can hate certin kinds of hair. All hair is beautiful. I love kinky hair, it looks so interesting. It is impossible to replicate without being born with it. Makes it more special.
Ashley
They're European because they were born in Europe. It's not actually in their blood. Learn what "nationality" is.
The Tyra show was WAAAAAY ahead of its time tf
We wanted to see your Afro Tyra :D
Tyra pressured that girl to get her hair natural back stage. Making a change with your hair is something that should come when you’re ready to. She did not seem confident enough in where she was in life to just be peer pressured to get it done right then and there.
oh my goodness watching this in 2020...I can't even. This whole thing shows how deep internalized racism goes.
I’ve had chemically processed hair for most of my life. But one year ago I’ve gone back to natural state cutting out all the relaxed ends. I believe I wanted it relaxed because it’s faster and more manageable. There’s many times in my natural hair journey that I’ve wanted to go back to the chemical because it’s faster and easier to deal with. But when I think of how my scalp has been damaged from the chemical and how the relaxer would burn my scalp I just get discouraged and Lee my natural hair. And I believe my mom didn’t know how to care for my natural hair so it was very course and unmanageable. But now I have learn to care for it thanks to RUclips and my natural hair is very soft and nicer than it was when I was a child. I would rather not get relaxed hair again but I would maybe have my hair blown out straight. I love my culture and other cultures and I’m happy with how God made me. I just want to be able to be versatile and that’s why I’ve chosen to be natural.
I'm mixed, and personally i love my long loose curly hair. It's thick enough, and not nappy. If you're born with nappy hair you should just embrace it. Also if your complaining about why your hair can't grow, you should get up ,and take care of it! SOme black girl's are just lazy, and others just want long straight hair like white, or asian people.
wow this is a whole other world to me. I never knew it was such an issue. It's just hair. People shouldnt dwell on it too much.
I know this comment is late, but THANK YOU! I'm black with big curly hair, and personally like you said, it's just hair. My hair doesn't make me who I am it's just a part of me. I understand where they are coming from, but I feel issues such as these are quite miniscule.
Thanks for taking the time to click and educate yourself. It's not just hair: this is the effect of slavery of black people. This is history that won't even ever be covered in ap/ib classes in high school. I highly suggest taking an African American lit, African American race relations course. This has been ingrained on so many levels in generations since thru out the black diaspora. Gratefully, our people have woken up and reeducating ourselves of the beauty and hair care.
Lol exactly I agree! People care wayyy to much in hair and looks like wtf? ? Lol they are other things we as humans should be focused on :) not fucking stupid hair cuz that will be the last thing I'll worry about.
Lol wut ? Never heard of that lol xD PS u talking to me?
***** I have xD PS I go to school lol . U see so that's the only reason why people get out of work or school ? Wooooww that's all u gata blame now ? People get kicked out of school or jobs for many reasons :)
I’m am so happy I went natural! I love everything about my natural hair! Don’t let anyone tell you that your not pretty with your natural hair because hunny your gorgeous!!
Seeing this in 2020 I’m so happy how far we’ve come.
Lol I always thought good hair was supposed to be curly hair not straight European hair Lololol. Regardless it's ignorant and I wish I hadn't watched it cause it's annoying lol.
What is nappy lol?
Good hair is healthy hair. Period. It has nothing to do with its coarseness or texture. This good hair thing people want to focus on is an opinion and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Huh?
Carla Burrel No worries. I'm really, really white and European. But I have super frizzy, curly hair, very coily. I'm dark blonde. I'm very pale. I used to think I had to have straight hair and that I was ugly because only black women had hair this coily right? White girls (AND boys) will pester as much about the frizz and coarseness if you're not black apparently. Even IN Europe, where I'm not even sure relaxing is a thing. (Not sure though, I don't really know that many black women.)
I am happy to have natural curls now but I've had to go CG and am still struggling trying to find products that work for me. :( If someone had told me about the whole relaxing thing when I was 10 I might have actually wanted it.
(I have had my hair straightened out with heat once and I know it looks crap on me, so whew.)
Yeah, hair is definitely a struggle at times for women of all races. That's why the hair industry will always be booming...as an adult I have learned to except and love my hair as it is and that has made others follow. We have to support one another no matter what our skin color, or hair texture. We are all beautiful
”Speaking as a person who has hair”
Growing up my mom all she had was a straighten comb and crown are blue magic hair grease, and she use to braid it and wash it once a week.. and my hair was long, then I got older and I put them chemicals in my hair and it came out and wouldn't grow like it was when I was little I thought that bw hair was suppose to be short.. but then I was like heck with them perms and went back old school and now my hair back long again and still growing, Loving what God gave me.. and when I see someone natural I compliment her, cause the bible days they didn't have no wigs and they was known as beautiful women..
the bible talks about the beauty of the spirit and specifically warns against women taking pride in outward adornment. including hairstyles. that would be natural or otherwise. the praise goes only to him, not to the creation. your comment shows vanity. many women who wear wigs could make it to heaven with purer hearts.
I Love what the Lady in the pink said.. And I Love my hair and I Love myself self.
Good hair is healthy hair don't matter what type it is.
I think that it is a shame that many black women think that they need weave and chemical relaxers in their hair for them to feel beautiful. I have went completely gone natural and one day I looked at my hair and I almost started crying. I saw a beautiful head of hair that I had been keeping away for years, and I am very happy with my decision.
The sista in the royal blue blouse wants to accepted by her European peers. She said the sista with the locks hair was unkept and not cleaned. Self hatred.
Watching this from 2020. These women just didn't know how to care for and moisturize afro textured hair. Thankfully, the natural hair movement came through
natural hair movement proved you all wrong and that natural hair can be good hair when you take care of it and not put any chemicals on it
LOL i love the way tyra explains the not washing your hair everyday (it gets better with time, kinda like marinating a chicken) hahah so true the second day of straightened hair is the best.
dam y r people hatin on the black girls hair!? i have natural straight 'white' hair and i really wish i had the curly afro hair! its so beautiful
I want a Afro
Huh, everybody just wants my hair. This afro, 😋💖❤️🌺🌎💙🐳

The level of information we didn’t have back then is amazing people as a society we were all less than wise. So I wanna take this moment to give a shout-out to RUclips for exposure of different human experiences.
I've never had a perm in my life, till this day when I straighten my hair and wear it down to school people constantly ask me if I have a perm. I proudly tell them I've never had one + my hair is longer than most girls at my school because I refuse to get a perm and because my hair would be completely unhealthy! Every girl at my school hair goes no farther than their throat. Luckily, my mom had sense enough not to give me one when I was small because she knew how unhealthy and short my hair would be, from experience, she had one in her 20s and decided to chop it off and go natural. Thankfully I didn't suffer that. I will not give a perm to my children in the future either. Natural hair is beautiful! Don't be afraid to show your true self. :)
@5:19 the conversation got heated. But she went straight to I'm a strong black woman....like sis, nobody asked you that lol. you must feel pressured somewhere for that to come out unprompted
Wow, society is funny. As an asian woman who has straight, shiny black hair that all these women seem to want, I'm super envious of white women who can pull of lighter pigments, and of black women who have volume and can pull off corns, dreads or even shaved...I wanna whip like Willow lol
The woman in the yellow shirt is something else

Nappy****
Thank God we’ve evolved since then
The pink shirt lady was so woke for her time!!! The other two ladies need help
I don't believe that we as African American women should be perming and putting weaves into our hair to EMULATE other ethnicities. I feel bad that women feel as though that's the reason they have to do that. I do put weaves into my hair and try new styles, but it's because I like to be creative and play with different styles and colors, not because I'm trying to copy the Indian or Asian girl that I know.
"Its more professional, It looks better when you look at it " wow and she's a "strong black women" ok sis
I wore my hair straight for a couple of years, but I went natural in 7th grade. My hair was damaged and I hated trying to be something I'm not... I'm 15 now and I recently cut all my hair off to start fresh. I love my curls !
I'm natural and my daughter is to...
I'm a white girl and I got no flow....
80% on hair care and our kids can't read
It's fantastic how much the issue has evolved from then to now.
The lady with the dreads has beautiful hair btw. The lady in the blue should be ashamed of herself.
You can make nappy hair look nice....but I will tell you that its hard as shit to deal with, I just perm my hair after being natural for 6 years an not only was it hard but I lost a lot of my hair while wear it natural...
That's your fault because you do not know how to care for your hair. If you did you would not have found it hard to deal with.
NO HONEY! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT UR TALKING ABOUT,MY HAIR IS WOOL AN I NEVER HAD LESS THAN 12 INCHES ON MY HEAD,EVERY MORNING I HAVE TO DEEL WITH KNOT...GOT TRIED OF THAT SHIT.....
Yes I understand. But if you knew how to prevent knots, then you would not have them. That is what you are not understanding. knowledge is power.
Its not that hard to deal with and my hair is nappy
people just like to make excuses for being lazy
Short answer *healthy hair"
Tyra struck gold on this one.
Good hair is any hair that isn't damaged..Why is it I only notice black people give each other so much grief over some god damn HAIR!?!?! You can do whatever you want to with it, going natural isn't the cure all nor does it put you any closer to being "black." It's so annoying.. It's their choice. If they want to do that.. let them. It's like when girls straighten their hair if it's curly or girls with really straight hair curl it.. they want to achieve a certain look they do not have naturally and...all power to them. Do what is best for you, not changing because a particular social group expects it of your to send some kind of message.
Black hair, in it's natural state, is often viewed as "messy" or "slobby" by ignorant people. The corn row / natural look isn't acceptable in a corporate environment. I have a friend who battled with chemically straightening her hair, weaves and extensions.. so much so that her hair started falling out. She eventually compromised by wearing it in many, many tiny braids and tying part of it back.
Bugsy Brown Yes it is, but in many places like hospitals, gyms, even in the teaching profession being natural is okay IF you maintain and style your hair in a presentable way such as buns, corn rows (on men, I had a math professor who was head of the department and he wore cornrows all the time), even fros are acceptable. It's a matter of presenting yourself, regardless of hair texture, in a professional manner. Naturally, a matted mop on your head won't get you any gold stars in the manger/boss/ etc's eyes. I feel bad for your friend, it's a shame it got to that point before she could do something about it. Maybe if she had moisturized her hair and given her hair more breaks between perms and styling, it would have stayed healthier.
***** Lol yeah, that can stink. My mother works in a hospital as a surgical tech and she had dreadlocks, everyone seems to love her hair. I never understood it really, because if you present yourself well...your hair is the least of their concerns.
White girl flow!? Girrrrlll byeee lol 😂🤣
Is that woman called "Tahiti"?
Blacks girls be named "Asia" so it aint surprising. Weird shit
@@dianachin4849 round of applause for your folks. But no other race in the States is known to name their kids Asia, Diamond, and Handsome. These are the tame examples
@@dianachin4849 uhhh ur putting words in my mouth now. I just said ghetto black folk give their kids wack names. Calm down
