Raven Symone, talks Good Hair....

- A question from Chris Rocks daughter jumpstarted the making of Good Hair, but the idea for a documentary about the culture of black hair actually took root in Rocks head about 15 years ago while doing a stand-up gig in Atlanta. He noticed his hotel was packed with people, and everyone seemed to be there for the same reason: the Bronner Bros. Hair Show. Hed never heard of it, but to the over 100,000 attendees its a yearly tradition stretching back to the early 50s, with hairstylists, barbers, and hair fanatics from all over the world coming together to discover whats new, best, and different in black hair care. It was a massive gathering, and Rock couldnt believe what a passionate, colorful crowd they were. In short, Rock discovered what a big crazy business black hair was.
I've been around hairdressers my whole life, he says, but I'd never seen anything like this it was just a whole another vibe. So 15 years ago, I had the idea this would make a great film.
The idea laid dormant until years later when Rocks daughter asked about her bad hair. He was astonished. I tell my daughters I love them 70 times a day, he says. I hug them and I kiss them I'm that kind of dad. To hear my daughter did not like something about herself when I'm telling her she's beautiful every single minute of the day really had me thinking about hair again.
She was only five at the time, he continues, and she was already having concerns about her hair shes already having hair envy. I felt I needed to understand more deeply how these issues are related: African-American women and their hair. And then I remembered the idea for a documentary.

Ok , I think everyone can agree with me when I say " I want the old Raven back " ☹
Lmfao it's so weird watching this in 2016 after all her fuckery...
Poor raven. I feel like people should “forgive her” or whatever. She is a good comedian, and seems like a nice person. I hate cancel culture.
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOO🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Back when Raven seem to have sense
Hmm, when she works there's a certain look that there has to be. Basically this idea is that when you're black, you're not educated. The more black you look, the less professional you look. The curlier the hair, is "less professional". Whatever is in my mind has nothing to with what's on my head. My hair does not define my brain, neither does my skin. I am not dumb because I am dark or because I have curly hair. Cut the shit, stay WOKE!
I know that this is an old comment, but Raven is an actress. When you're in a role you don't decide what your hair and wardrobe is. If she was talking about a corporate job, that would've been different.
The problem is that every time girls leave the house they have to have a weave on. You can talk about how much your natural hair is beautiful, but If you don't wear it out then you are ashamed of it and use wigs to mask yourself.
I hate when people say shit like this an think because black women wear weaves we are hiding and masking our natural hair, you act as if you dont what is underneath. Some people just like to change it up.
UniquetheArt
I understand wearing weave sometimes, but when the weave is your "best look", something is wrong.
Have you ever thought that maybe a weave is just easier it honestly is sometimes and depending on the person their hair is probably more high maintenance than getting up everyday to flat iron and even if they could just do that think of all the heat damage weaves are a lot easier for some people.
UniquetheArt My question is, why do these Black dudes have long hair in dredlocks and stuff, but our own women can't seem to embrace natural hair styles.
Instead from a young age it's all about perms. By the time they grow up all those chemicals have shut the hair growth down. You don't have to straighten your hair. I know we live in western society, but that shouldn't make you hate our natural afro. Who cares if we are different. Why can't we just have the stance that we actually like our fro's?
That would eliminate heat damage, and all the rest of your problems.
Afro hair is not wicked, ugly, or a curse. It is how we were created. We are unique and should accept ourselves instead of conforming to white standards.
Anthony Baker Your taking my comment wrong I agree with you and all you say but I think if a black woman wants to wear her hair in a weave she shouldn't be judge by it in the end of the day we have been westernized and some us will embrace that and some opus want to embrace our roots. Personally Im natural but I don't like when natural women or men judge the ones who decide not take that route.
She is very well spoken and doesn't try to hide the truth about black women and what they go through everyday
It is barbaric for any person to scalp another human being to get some "good hair". If anyone buys another human's hair, the donor of that hair should have money personally sent and they should be able to go to school and get out of poverty. Spending $100-1000 dollars for a bag of hair is okay, but spending $6-50 on hair products to promote healthy hair growth is bad? Explain that logic... #loveyourselfplease
I miss these old days when they used to play that's so raven and on the cheetah girls movies
Regina Alexandre , she is perfect for family shows.
She needs to go back to speaking like this....more likable
big ups to raven she is being very BIG about the topic that says a lot about her confidence
Raven is still beautiful!!!
I watch That's So Raven regularly on RUclips! It makes me happy and it comforts me :) She's so pretty and hilarious! So so talented!
LOVE HER!!! She is so real and honest. In my mind she is my cute, sassy, fun little sister. She seems like so much fun.
People say what they want about Raven, but her hair be on POINT at ALL times. Get it...
i love her, she is such a sweet and honest young woman..no denial, no apologies for what she chooses.
I love Raven.... her attitude is sassy and right on.
I'm black and Arab and I dont give a damn what other people say, I can wear my hair the way I want to. If I want to straighten it so what, if I want to wear it curly, so what that has nothing to do with nobody else that's not nobody else's business. That does not mean I hate my hair, I love my hair and I do straighten it from time to time to give myself a break. I am not trying to be white when I straighten it,(nothing against white people). So if a black girl wants to wear her hair in braids, curly, kinky, straighten what ever, that has nothing to do with anyone else it is there business. It is just hair why the hell does it even matter, why are others so concerned about other people. "Is it real, is it fake", like why does matter, will you sleep better at night knowing that someone's hair is real or fake. Who gives a damn, do what you want it's so many others things we can talk about, but the damn topic is black women and the hair that comes out of there head. I know plenty of black women who have hair down to there ass, and some of them still wear weave, it's there damn business. Hair growth has nothing to do with the color of your skin, it's whether or not you take care of it. Point blank and period.
+NicoleStyles I agree with you. People should style their hair however they want.
+NicoleStyles most folks in society won't tell a black women that she looks great -fake or real hair. Some folks are haters. These people remind me of the little bad boy who always hits the little girl he likes. My mom told me, we are in the dimension of adolescence, where we physically age, but most of us will always be child-minded--- and that's what most of the childish attitude is. Some people think-Some black women look exotic and we admire them with fake or real hair- we look up to them, but to make myself feel less salty I'll be phony and pretend like its a problem with these women but secretly I love it. Sorry, RUclips automatically placed a strike through some of my words.
+Celina Bartutis That's your opinion and your entitled to it.If a black women gets her real hair straighten with heat- colored- textured- pulled and what ever else, with her own hair, she is not put down but when she wants to protect her hair or is transitioning and wear something that doesn't damage it then its a problem- this sounds stupid. Also, they don't have to stop wearing it because you think it looks stupid. We all do things that are shameful and stupid, to others.
once again thanks for your opinion but every one doesn't hate them-self.
no disrespect babe but it's reason why so many black people in this country suffer in this country. a people with no sense of self compared to test of the people here.
I definitely have to watch this movie! Raven looks so beautiful in this interview!
I watched that documentary and Raven pulling her weave like that was just THE best part! lol.
this is a old video to comment on but I'm going to anyways. I am a truck driver and I use to do cross country. I never been to Atlanta before I did truck driving. The first time going, I went to the Petro Truck Stop outside of Atlanta, couple miles away from the six flags / Lithia Springs. The truck stop, had a weave salon. After first noticing that, I started to notice alot more about it around the city. Never seen it before lol. I thought I've seen a lot of crazy shit in California. But damn....
Jesse Crookes never too late to comment and weave is big business in the south. They have done armed robberies on weave shops
Amazing! That show was more than just hair. It was very much about fashion!
Amen! :) I am glad you shared that.
Honestly, i am so glad something like this came out. i need to find where i can watch the whole thing. I don't wear weave and i don't think there is anything wrong with it but i can definately relate. There are some good looking people wearing weave. and i think this film can help a LOT of confused people understand and it can teach me something. This is culture for anyone who wanted to know about different kinds of hair. I think everyone who has hair PERIOD can relate.
This film was VERY educational for me and I am glad I saw it; although, when I was watching it, it also made me think of how I used to risk getting skin cancer going to tanning booths and getting those God awful spiral perms (yeah, I'm talking about the 80's). Now at 40, I'm seeing a dermatologist for all the damage done tanning. I think the long and short of it is to be happy and confident with yourself & who you are and if others don't like it, too bad. Kudos to CR for making this film!
Huh, I'm natural. I don't know my opinion on, relaxed, weave, wigs all that. When I was four I got a relaxer (clearly not my choose). Know I'm 15, I shaved my hair off last year and have Ben natural for a little more than a year.
I'm not negatively judging others that aren't natural. But every body says they do all these things because it's easier to handle and stuff, but that's not what I've herd or felt or even seen when my hair was natural. It's kind of sad that know one supports teaches there children that there naturally beautiful. 😿
Now I understand why black women and black girls have a fascination with my hair. I have short dark brown hair and really really straight its really manageable but and it doesn't curl too . Growing up and till this day black women always complimented on how nice and pretty my hair is and ask me what do I do to get it straight and I've never understood why they always ask me and they always when as far as running their fingers through my hair! I don't mind and when ask what I do to have my hair the way do, I respond with a nothing, I don't do anything special o just wash it and maybe put some gel or other male hair products
UniversalPotentate haha or molestable ?
UniversalPotentate lol but seriously I was almost molested when I was 6 :(
UniversalPotentate no by one of my uncles (nothing to do with black people)
UniversalPotentate I was being serious though, I was almost molested. Damn how did we end it up talking about this?
UniversalPotentate i dont know is that why i don't enjoy sex as much???
i love raven! shes so confident and i love her personality! its so genuine and real. love it. its hard to see that in hollywood. especially since she grew up in it at such a young age.
Raven is such a sweet and cool person. I remember watching her as little Olivia on the Cosby Show. I love her personality.
She's a really lovely and intelligent young woman!!! I'm so glad that there are such good female role models in the public arena. If only the good ones got some media time rather than the train wrecks.
At first I did not understand Raven...I thought that she was just a spoiled TV kid who didn't understand how it was to be black. Now, I love her so much! She is such a down to earth and real woman and I appreciate the fact that certain things she shares with the world and is not ashamed to tell you about it!
ii love all of raven's haiirstyles
I'd rather meet Raven then any other celebrity. Her personality just makes her seem so approachable unlike most celebrities. She's so honest and expresses herself so well
Raven is such an insperation and positive romodel to ppl of ALL ages! She beautiful, smart, confident, and really comfortable in her own skin and afraid to be herself! I've admired her ever since I was a little girl! You keep doin your thing Ray!!!
luv her she is so real and straight up
My favorite Raven era
I don't care what kind of hair she has, she's such a beautiful person.
how awkward is it when the ad before the video is for a film called "the raven". LOL
I love this girl so much, shes real ffunny,so beautiful, Go RAven!!
Raven is so paid!! I love Raven and her hair is Always on point!!
shes soo inteligent, absolutey love her!
Raven Rocks!!!...i ♥ her!
I love Raven! I love how she pulled at her weave!!! :-P
Ilove raven symone she is soooofreaking awsome!!! and she keeps it real all the time!!!
She's beautiful and so down to earth! That's what I like about her....very significant and classy lady. My idol!
i swear raven is my favorite celebrity!!!
RAVEN SYMONE, make more projects and beat more stars!!! I LOVE YOU.
Raven-symone is A Wonderful, Classy, Sweet, Talented, Intelligent, and Beautiful Person
i love raven .. she so confident and pretty ...ad well spoken ..gooo girl!!
Shes totally comfortable and confident in the fact that she wants to look white, and refuses to wear her hair naturally.... Maybe if she took a stand for her real/natural hair as a beautifly woman, people would not have been so quick to call her a "poodle"....
do natural women have to put up with scalp burns, chemical poisoning, hair loss, etc...? taking care of your hair is one thing. A lifetime of purposely damaging your God given hair is something else.
Daaaaamn raven looked so good back then
That's just what some men want. Most black men just want nice looking and nice acting black women who are healthy and have great overall qualities. They feel most comfortable with that type.
I love this interview...and that is so true !!1 We wanna swing our hair around thinking we Beyonce and we not!! Lol!!
Oh I love Raven.
i have curly hair and i learned though time how to manage it and by the time i was in my teens i knew how to take care of it. i never straighten it or relax it
i love raven! she is such a positive role model :)
I wonder why Chris Rock didn't show the process he uses to get his hair a little wavy. He has been in a few movies where he showcased his natural hair texture which is not silky smooth. By the way, a lot of sisters take their cues on hair styles from what brothers say they want. One well-known black male publicly said that women should not wear their hair like a man (natural).
"Interesting isn't it"... Lmao I love you Raven.
where can i see the full documentary?
Love Raven
You go Raven!!!!!
Damn black women look so fucking good.
I dont give a damn if they wear weave or went bald. These women look like real life goddesses. No wonder black dudes call them queens.
i love her!! best female comedian ever! that's so raven is for EVER!
loved it!!
Raven seems to have grown up under the Cosby influence - she's funny, intelligent and relaxed. What a gal :)
you go gurl!
i love raven so glad 4 her she deserve everything the world has to offer 4 her :} just so talent luv thiz girl fudge cake the haterz :/
love herrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr omg
I love Raven and thats so raven.!!\
And also all these women feautred on good hair.
Im gonna check out this DVD =)
God i love raven, she's just gorgeous and freaking funny :)
ravens so pretty i love her
love her.
Raven answers so well. She's cool.
i love her
“I like it to be nice and tight and secure. So, that when I whip it around thinkin’ that I’m Beyoncé it’s not gonna move. You know what I’m sayin’?” LOL!
Raven Looks Amazing! :)
If you found the documentary bit interesting I know that a singer over in the Uk did a documentary one weave and were it comes from and stuff. I dont know if its on you tube but watch it and you may think twice. her name is Jameelia
In the video, Raven talks about that; she says "I went on the red carpet [with natural hair] and someone called me a poodle." Most workplaces look down upon natural black hair and see it as "unprofessional" so a lot of women choose to wear weaves or wigs or relax their hair.
big ups on the improve audio!
I understand you do, but the majority of my class mates who are African American female and my friends hate their hair, the way it is naturally.. and I don't understand why, but I believe it's because of the media and celebs! and not only is their a hair problem but also skin, most of them want to be light skinned..
gurl, there was this black-girl fight at my skool, WEAVE EVERYWHERE! haha
this is why there is not a big black push to promote natural hair....MONEY!!!!!!!!!!! But I thought Raven Simone had long hair when she was in Cosby Show. But respect to her for her honesty lol
I adore her.
raven looks good with any hair and in any outfit :)
They have a specific kind of hair that's not like the typical hair you see on other races. It requires a lot more care and has different tendencies than other hair.
I love Raven!
Dang, I thought that was Raven's real hair. It looks the bombbbb!
I love raven
thats a damn shame!! this was educational. i want to attend the hair show!! i wonder how much it cost?
The person about Raven was right...lol I never noticed... I'm happy she came out. Self love
i have seen hispanic people, puerto rican people and even indian people with kinki hair like the african american race...so we cant say that we r the only people with this type of texture hair...
I forgot how cool Raven was.
@applebaum some black ppl do have natural straight hair, just like any other race, black ppl have different hair textures! Some have straight, some have wavy, my mom has curly hair but her hair is a diff curl than mine! My curls are SUPER TIGHT CURLS, which means, I can flat iron my hair, but if I were I wash it, like most ppl you would probably think I cut my hair cause my curls are so tight!
ha i loved it, keep it tight.
I hate getting my hair done but in the end it looks good.
I am going natural now but i do love my clips and weaves.
@makeupbygloria she has admit it in an interview she said she loves the glamours hair and clothes
fyi - love the blacktreemedia vids but the audio for the interviewer is not that good. - but like I said always love the vids good job
lol i think i'm one of few white girls that can understand the pain of a black girl getting her hair done...my foster sister would cry every time she would relax her hair but refuse to stop because she wanted it like mine. she stopped for a while after i showed her that i have to put some stuff on my hair to make it silky and straighten it to make it smooth. she had no idea, since i got up way earlier than she did. we all have our own way of doing our hair and our own secrets to it.
raven ..is brave to do that and im glad she aint ashamed to tell she wears weave but i have long hair n its curly n very thick...and it can get nappy i put a texurizer n my hair is still fine its jus less curly and i want it back curlyer but im going to get a hot oil treament to repair it
Raven Raven Raven! raven is awesome! =D she looks fabulous as always.
Well, it's easy to say "don't take it seriously" when it's not affecting your ability to get a job. Actors are all about image and looking like a poodle isn't a good image. I have natural hair and am lucky to work for a company that has pretty chill wardrobe requirements. I do agree with you on the celebs/media affecting the younger generations but it's much more than that; we're being encouraged from lots of sources to change our natural appearance and that goes for everyone.
