Thanks for the indepth review and tips.
I'd like to add that lever-type espresso makers also include the Rok, the Faema Baby (the precursor to the Robot) and the Superkop, which are all "pour and press" machines. There are others with heaters (like the Elektra), but I'm a purist and love simple as possible...
Perhaps you would be in a position to compare these models, too?
    Thanks again, teşkurler,
    Michael

Because the legs screw into the base, you could in theory add a spacer between the bottom of the legs and the base that is a bit wider to make the space tall enough for bigger glasses and to fit a scale.

    •  Год назад +2

That could be done but force applied will be carried by fewer threads. It is a robust design anyways. :)

Great video! Are you able to extract the bean flavors in your shots- like the "tasting notes" listed for the beans?

    •  4 месяца назад +1

Thanks! Yes, if you can properly pre-heat the portafilter. It is sometimes difficult to extract well enough for light roasted coffees. If you want to play safe, use espresso roast or not very light roasts, and pre-heat properly. The result will 90% of the time good.

I just got a DF64 to go with my Robot. I've been pulling decent shots on the Robot for about 18 months now with coffee ground at the roaster. The coffee from the roaster isn't always ground exactly the same though so sometimes it's goes through too fast and sometimes it's too fine so it doesn't work at all. When it's good, it's very good.
However, I have not gotten the DF64 go grind coffee yet that makes and espresso. The Robot shoots water out the sides and the shot ends in 10 seconds. I thought it was too course so I ground some finer coffee with the same result. I tried every grind clear down to powder and it finally channeled right through the middle and made an unusable shot in 10 seconds again. I think that up until I got to the powder it was lifting the puck and water was shooting out underneath. Have you had this problem?

    •  2 года назад

it could be a gasket related issue. Can you please check the gasket for any damage or tear? You may remove the gasket, inspect, clean and reinstall. This could be the reason in order not to create enough pressure for a shot. There could be a leak.

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams 2 года назад +1

@ But I can pull shots with coffee from the roaster still. I thought the same as you and then I also thought about grind size so halfway through taking 3 or 4 cafe showers I put in the coffee from the roaster and pulled a perfect shot. With the baseline set I went back to taking coffee showers.
With the Coffee from the DF64 I've ground from 26 (zeroed) down to 10 with the same results - a 10 second coffee shower with it spraying all over and no resistance. When I ground at 3 which is essentially powder I got resistance right off the bat and then nothing as it visible channeled through the middle.
All pucks came out complete and dry. I suspect that the puck is lifting and the water just goes under it.

    • @RoboManInvestor
      @RoboManInvestor Год назад

@@GrantMcWilliamsI really hope you have solved your issue by now but this sounds like an alignment issue with the burrs of the df64. There are a few videos on YT that explain how to check and fix your alignment.

For future reference, what you said at the end of your last comment is probably what is happening. Once you push down on the arms, you *cannot* ever lift them or even take away all the pressure until the very end of the shot. The pressure creates a vacuum that is powerful enough to dislodge the puck and have the water bypass the coffee completely. Watch Sprometheus' video on the Cafelat, it happened to him too.

A proper 58mm design with standard portafilter mount would have been nice. Could have used standard tools at least. Baffling as to why they didn't.

    •  5 месяцев назад

I agree with you. It is one of the best manual devices in the market and seems like they have a different marketing strategy.

Hi, great video!. Tks so much. May I know your view on the espresso quality produced compared to manual machines like Rancilio Silvia, Lelit Mara X or Bianca?

    •  2 года назад +1

Thanks! I may try and let you know but main difference will be repeatability and consistency as manual espresso machines require good pre heating. For medium and espresso roasts, results could be comparable (I just guess) but for filter roasts, commercial machines could give easier shots. Let's try and see instead of guessing :)

Thanks so much for making an English version! Can you share more info of how you use the Comandante with the Robot? And also the method using the wdt tool? Do you stir all the way (the tool scratching the bottom?) Thank you!

    •  3 года назад +1

Hello, thank you for watching. I mostly used Comandante 6-7 clicks with Cafelat Robot. That worked well with 16-18 grams dose and typically 1:2.5 ratio. I used a "wdt-like" tool and my method was not the best to distribute the coffee but it seemed to work well. I did not follow a specific pattern. I just stirred all the way by drawing small circles.

Does the PISTON normally touch the surface of the coffee water, or is there always a layer of AIR in between?

    •  Год назад +1

Normally, there is a layer of air due to gaskets on the piston. If the seal is damaged, you may see contact with the water.

What grind size you suggest? I've a 1zpresso grinder made for espresso.. thankyou

@ I've a 1zpresso k ultra. Many thanks if any help. For now I am trying at medium espresso suggested clicks (120 clicks).
More, if You can help me, I've this problem:
I've done 10 coffee. Three time the coffee was very very good for a beginner... and all the other times when trying to make the leverage the water spilled from above without the possibility to generate any pressure.
The problem is that I have not the feeling of a badly inserted portafilter, and the seal seem ok. The portafilter stabs seem both inserted..
Sure is a problem of the portafilter-seal, but i don't know how to fix it. I inserted the portafilter as in the user manual.. all the time the feeling inserting was the same.. but most of time I have had only water from above..
I am without ideas, the problem seem random.

Hi, How did you track the pressure profile shown at the beginning of the video? I am guessing by recording the video and manually putting the data points to a spreadsheet.

    hello sir, question
I just did my 1st shot in my Cafelat Robot
My set up is similar to yours:
Comandante (7 click without Red Clix)
    Coffee (14Gram)
    Water directly before boil
However I am having an issue on generating any pressure (only reached 2-3 bars) even when I press hard (I just finished quicker)
Do you know what can be improved for my case?

    •  3 года назад +1

If you cannot generate required pressure, then you need to grind finer and/or tamp harder. You may also want to increase the dose (amount of coffee) while doing this. I highly recommend to use a WDT. Good luck!

    • @Sandevistan2020
      @Sandevistan2020 3 года назад

Thanks, will try. I do try declumping using chopsticks, maybe it's not good enough.
I have been rewatching your video and felt that you generate 8 bar quite easily; how hard do you actually press? Do you use your body weight at all ? So far I only use my arm strength while pressing since my table is taller than yours.
I tried to do more dose today (18.5grams and 5 clicks on comandante) and are able to do 5 bar but very unstable (more stay at 4)
Overall taste is fairly decent, maybe a bit on the sour side.

    •  3 года назад

@@Sandevistan2020 I use my body weight to generate enough pressure (8+ bars). It is not easy to press with arms to generate such pressure. It may be because of the coffee you use. Is the coffee you use fresh? Is it light roast or espresso roast? For testi ng purposes, you may want to grind as fine as you can but this may also create channeling. Have you tried different coffees? If you do everything right (whole process, correct installation, etc...) the issue could be with the gasket seal or the product itself.

A lot of unnecessary "hacks" e.g. you really don't need the rubber band if you just change the workflow a bit. Also you missed the biggest helpful tip which is to measure how much water you're putting in, that way you don't have to mess around with switching cups at the end. Simply push all the water out.. 20g coffee with 60mls water will give you 40g out. Perfect.

    •  3 года назад +2

Thank you for the tips and comments. I always use a scale to measure the espresso output. Everyone has a different workflow and there are for sure better ways to manage it. Some of the tips were requested by the users to be added in the video. It is nice to hear tips like you recommended. Once again, thank you.
