I’m 34 and was 14 when “enema” came out. Blink was the first band I ever loved. I owned the Tom Delongs strat when I was in high school. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years already god life is a trip. It really makes me sad not seeing Tom in blink, he was blink. I’m not sure how old any of u are but, I was able to see blink in their prime as a kid.
People tend to forget that Tom is actually a phenomenal guitar player just because he left an admittedly successful band to pursue his life-long dreams and desires with the money he made for himself. Man is living the life he wants, and that's admirable. As a huge blink-182 fan, I wish the band still went on (Tom, Mark & Travis (with no offense to Matt Skiba, who is also a fantastic musician)) but in the end, Tom is chasing his happiness and I respect that.
People are always telling me how Tom and Mark are very basic, simple musicians when it comes to their talent with their instruments. My only argument is always “yeah but when you hear just the guitar section and no vocals, you immediately recognize it as blink 182 right? So obviously they got a signature sound, obviously they are doing something right.”
Well, they had a bass intro like in carousel on their first album. Even with their basic understanding for music, they absolutely knew, what they were doing and had a great feel for melodies.
I never understood this. That maybe be because I don't play guitar but I think the instruments being played by Blink seem way more difficult to play than a lot of bands such as Oasis or Linkin Park (this is coming from the top tracks I know of). Can someone explain what I am missing?
definitely an innovator and the most influential pop punk guitarist ever. he's underrated. tom could write catchy punk riffs like Cobain could write amazing melodies
Haha... he's definitely not underrated as a guitarist... he maybe underrated as a person who comes up with blindingly simple, yet catchy, "riffs." I'm a fan of Tom... I started out with a Yamaha Pacifica electric guitar about 20 years ago, and from the beginning all of Tom's licks are approachable, fun and easy to master. I am not guitarist savant or anything of the sort. I'm sorry he is not underrated as guitarist in my opinion. What he does takes very little skill, and even less forethought. He's great to study if you are a beginning guitarist though, and Blink 182 music is super fun.
@@BSCo_Studio it takes skill to write riffs that catchy. just cause they're easy to play doesn't mean you could've created them. if it was so easy, you would have tons of hit songs too. just listen to the new wannabe blink album. there are no riffs. and the songs are not as well written and catchy as before. they were thrown together. tom is underrated cause people say he sucks but he doesn't. he's really creative. compare all of these riffs here to CA. there are like two riffs on the entire album. its a completely different band
The dude is an underrated master at writing energetic and beautiful melodies and I seem to meet a lot good guitar players who are embarrassed to admit Tom is who made them want to play and it shouldn’t be that way
If I’d be ashamed of saying that Tom and Blink inspired me playing guitar, all these years since I heard blink for first time until now would be in vain...
Robby Frick yea man. I play mostly metal and prog along the lines of the faceless and veil of maya now but I definitely got super inspired listening to blink back in the day. Learned a lot of guitar basics as well as some tricky stuff from jamming to blink. To this day I still love to jam to blink
It was a weird beautiful fusion of rhythm and lead guitar. Probably partially born of him being the only guitar player, and Mark generally only the bass notes for the chords.
I remember back in 99 having discussion during lunch breaks at school with my friends about who was the better guitarist, Tom or any of James/Kirk from Metallica. I was on Tom side totally biased because I was into Blink and could understand the Metallica attitude. I started playing guitar and realized that Metallica songs were a little harder to learn and ended up feeling like I was wrong with Metallica and they were better guitarists. Now, after 20 years, I know the definitive answer is that they are all masters at what they do. We have to praise Tom and the Metallica boys for being so good and consistent regardless the emotions they project through their music.
Tom Delonge for me is a genius, he have a unic style, on guitar, composing, and writing music and lyrics. My idol on music since i discover Blink 182 in 1999. Cheers from 🇵🇹 Portugal.
It's smart that you're alternate picking these riffs. Saves the wrist and elbow from lots of pain. Me being foolish tried to mirror Tom's live style of playing which is pretty much all downstrokes, and caused me tendonitis over several years of playing. Respect for your clean and articulate style of playing. Kudos!
Was looking for a comment like this. I feel like the alternate picking leaves the songs sounding dead and uninspired. Part of blink was the passion and energy needed for those downstrokes. This sounds like a theory nerd playing blink. Good, but no soul.
the more you grew as a musician, the more you respect his guitar works. i know he's not guitar gods, but his riffs is played by millions until now. his guitar works on self titled was the best.
This is actually a really good list... The only other thing that’s underrated are your videos, dude. Seriously. I’m surprised you don’t get more views! The quality is really good.
This is why 2019 blink doesnt sound like blink. Those riffs bro, is what makes them blink. Go back and listen to california and enima. Big difference all because california dont have tom's riffs
This video is INSANE. As a Blink fan, this video is like hearing the idealized versions of the songs that only exist in my mind. Particularly for the songs that were not originally blessed with a good producer (RIP Jerry Finn), your covers are more than an homage---they are a superior recreation. Truly, thank you for this Blink 182 HD Remake!
Crazy how much better the older riffs sound with the newer pop punk sound. The riffs are super creative but it's hard to realize that when the production of their earlier material was garbage
Well no shit lmao. They recorded the drums and guitar in Tom's bathroom when he still lived at home, then they remastered it later on which helped. I love the shitty garage sound honestly lol
Dude this is so true. Such an underrated comment. I wish all their old stuff could be re recorded then ppl could realize how amazing it was. The shitty production really throws a lot of the casual fans off of it.
Won't be home for Christmas was such a rad fucking song with a great guitar riff. I feel like it should have got more credit. Loved the video, Keep shredding man 🤘
I have Tom's Daphne blue Stratocaster. My favorite album to play is enema and take off your pants and jacket. Definitely want a second one . Either surf green or his all black one from box car racer. I do like his newer Gibson hollow body models too but idk I like late 90s Tom the most so I'm sticking with the signature fenders . Great video man . Good song choice. Good playing
As a 12 year old guitar player looking for inspiration, I found it in Tom Delonge. I remember when takeoff your pants and jacket came out and I learned the whole album in a week and everybody thought I was so amazing lol. Dysentery Gary was probably my favorite riff. Sorry to go on, it's pretty nostalgic for me
Tom Delonge is and shall forever be my idol, i remember being 12 years old seeing blink 182 on tv and i immediately asked my mom for a guitar, awesome job by the way
Man i agree haha... The first time i ever heard natives i thought it sounds so familiar and couldnt figure it out. It took a bit but it does resemble young london alot
It's like every riff is a guitar solo in it's own respect. You don't see a long of bands play like this at all. Much less a 3 piece band like. Blink 182.
Lol a couple years ago, I Won't Be Home For Christmas, was on the grocery stores radio everyday. Had a chuckle everyday. No one else knew what it was. My assistant manager at the time was named bubba. Good times. Lol
Enthused is a banger! All the guitar parts in it rock. I especially like the octave bit. I Won't Be Home for Christmas is a great riff. Definitely one of their most underrated ones. Props for putting Wasting Time in here! The best ever Blink riff for me. Asthenia is a cool riff. Always sounded kinda like Soulmate by No Use for a Name.
Tom Delonge is the God of pop punk riffs. What other band can you immediately name when you hear the first 3 seconds of every song? Blink has the most recognizable sound in rock. And Tom made those simple insanely catchy but uniquely Blink riffs. He's a legend
This video brought back so many rich filled memories... A new hope, always induces goosebumps for some reason 🤔 And to be honest I wrote them off after take off your pants and jacket. The vocals didn’t resonate anymore, but your video highlights a lot of great songs I wouldn’t of heard. Tremendous video👍🏻
Pop punk bands just dont make riffs like this anymore. Now you just hear easycore rythm riffs with one or two other lead guitar riffs playing some kind of double harmony in the background
@@SugarpillProd haha i know man. I dont mind some of these new bands but theres so many clones. The only ones that stand out to me are the bottom line and neck deep. Id day a day to remember but theyre a different kinds genre and era.
@@SugarpillProd im a fan but they where one of the first to so.that sound. U should check out "the bottom line" and my mates band "everyone and anyone" both uk bands and i was in a band woth the drummer from everyone ad anyone and theyve just been signed.
enthused is so underated, especially that weird palm muted part right after that riff you played. Took me ages to learn when I first started playing. Cheers!
I've been in a blink phase lately, which is why this vid even popped up on my home page in the first place. Every single one of these riffs is amazing (nice playing, tone and arrangements BTW). The thing is, not all of them really panned out into amazing songs IMO. Like, Dysentery Gary and Touchdown Boy sound epic AF here but I never even realized it, because the song (to me) has always been kinda meh on the whole. And not saying that to criticize Tom or blink. It just makes me appreciate the riffage more, as well as Tom's playing style, as well as the few songs where they really nailed it. And the fact that they're just human, like you and me. You can't knock it out of the park every time. I know "respectable" guitarists would not be impressed by a guy like Tom. And I get that, sort of. Nobody should be worshipping Tom for his chops or innovation or anything like that. But I also think you really gotta appreciate what this man does... it's super catchy, it flows, and it's even emotional in some strange sense. This guy is fuckin' unique, and good. This is why I love Tom, and this is why I love blink.

A new hope, always induces goosebumps for some reason 🤔
And to be honest I wrote them off after take off your pants and jacket.
The vocals didn’t resonate anymore, but your video highlights a lot of great songs I wouldn’t of heard.
Tremendous video👍🏻
Wow Travis Barker is the PERFECT drummer for Blink. He ties all of the sounds together with the use of his drums so well it's amazing.
There is something special about these riffs, the emotions they evoke. Major nostalgia attack.
Ehi good job, You use effect for the sound so close to Tom? Or only amp?
Awesome video, can listen to this on repeat!
Nice Twin Peaks shirt.. Agent Cooper for president!
Bro thank you for including 21 days. That great song is so under-appreciated.
Can’t believe you left Carousel and M&Ms off
I don't think those are really underrated though
loved the mixing. sounds great
Pop punk bands just dont make riffs like this anymore.
Cheers!
He is actually so talented. No one makes riffs like Tom.
I love I won’t be home for christmas, i’ve been listening to it a lot recently for some reason but the riff is really good
I've been in a blink phase lately, which is why this vid even popped up on my home page in the first place.
