@Blue Pulse Gaming honestly, I think this one's worse.... somehow.
With those disgustingly large eyes pointing in different directions, the smoke coming out of his ears, the way he touches his junk when he sings to her- a very clearly young child- and lest we forget:
      > the LITERAL TONGUE PANTING IN AND OUT OF IT'S MOUTH, wtf.

interesting approach to the wolf. The mask is pretty well done and I like how it expresses emotion and such. I also like the actor's growl in his voice and I have to give my props to anyone who can not only WEAR that mask, but be able to jump around and sing in it so effortlessly. In the long run though, I prefer the broadway version

  • @JunoMacguff2012

I think that with the acting, singing, and the animatronic head, that's probably the best wolf I've ever seen. It's a shame that there's only two other clips posted.

  • @3bluenight
    @3bluenight 16 лет назад +32

I remember reading once that Sondheim had wished the London production had been filmed, so I am so thankful that these clips have been posted.
I really like this interpretation. I feel that the direction and design really allows the audience to view the material from a psychological perspective.
The stories are generally of European origin and the production seems to embrace that history and turn it into an advantage.

I find this scene superior to the OBC version. I like how this wolf's more of a....trickster where the Bway wolf was almost a pervert. But it depends on interpretation. Apparently Sondheim liked that the OBC wolf played up the whole "loss of sexual innocence" of Little Red.

  • @emilygracey

I really like the Wolf! The tuxedo gives him a very neat air, and the headgear is made of awesome. I love how he pants near the end!
I don't really like this Little Red Riding Hood though. I don't mind the accent, but her voice is very... screechy, I guess? Or really high-pitched.

I get to play the wolf, and we're making him look like the original wolf, but the leather jacket is a biker jacket with studds on it, and random animal pelts, and a lot of other biker/gothic accessories, so I'm very excited to portray this sort of wolf and it's a very fun party to play.

I don't know if it's cultural differences maybe in NY at the time the sexual undertones could be a bit more blatant and it was more acceptable such as with the penis and in London it was different or they wanted to capitalise on the creepier aspects of the story. I mean the wolf in the OBC costume wise looks more like a "bad boy" biker type with the shirt open and wolf penis here the wolf looks like a gentleman. It means the sexual undertone sort of go amiss which is a shame as that aspect of this song adds to the maturity and complexity of the piece. Also and I guess credit to the actor for this, his portrayal such voice and his hand movments and makes him sound and look so much older than Red that he really comes across as a creepy old man/wolf pedophile. It's a little disconcerting to watch. Especially that "goodbye..little girl" at the end. Really creepy.

I don't think the sexual overtones are amiss. It takes on a much darker more predatory dynamic which psychologically and symbolically works.

For one, ever since I saw a high school production of the play that I enjoyed very much, I have been listening to the london cast recording, so I am more used to the London voices. Second, I saw the clip of the American version on youtube, and to me, the wolf did not seem as sophisticated as this one, which made me love this wolf in the first place.

The panting in time with the music at the end is inspired.
Also, do wonder re: sexual undertones, or lack thereof - maybe this performance was watered down slightly owing to it being on a pre watershed tv show?

PVCC? Arizona? They made us look at the Nerms random walking during the most personal song in the show, No One Is Alone. I must admit I liked the idea, but the execution did not deliver what was promised in the director's notes.
There was one time, the Nerms actually contributed to the plot. Milky White's death. It was also my favorite part of the Nerms. If they were included in the plot more, and there were many ways I thought up thinking about it later, the Nerms could have been awesome.
