- 2022 Update: This will not work with the new Minecraft launcher from the Microsoft store. You much use the legacy launcher which can be officially downloaded here: www.minecraft.net/en-us/download (once on the page download Minecraft for Windows 7/8, this will download the legacy launcher).

UPDATE NOV 2021: You need to use the old Minecraft launcher for this to work as you cannot open the Minecraft launcher downloaded from the Microsoft Store in Steam.
If you are having problems:
• Choose Minecraft Launcher in Steam if you don't see Minecraft.
•If the controller does not work in game, in big picture mode, find minecraft and look for controller options and uncheck "Allow Desktop Configuration in Launcher".
• If the game crashes, try to disable the steam overlay. In the steam (not big picture), in the top left hand corner click settings. Choose In-Game, then uncheck "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game".

There is no option to uncheck that under properties. It jus shows where the program files are and “set launch options...” my mine craft crashes right before control configs load from steam every single time.
@@shawndog321 Yea I didn't realize that didn't work for non-steam games, I updated the comment so it should now work in non-steam games.
When I disable it I can’t use my controller, but it doesn’t crash, but when it is enabled I can and it crashes. Pls help anyone
@@TheHowToGuy123 When I click on play, Minecraft opens into a different screen, and there is no way for me to click play with the controller, since I have to use my mouse. Is there a way for Minecraft to not open up outside of big picture mode?

This seems like such a work around just to get controller support. Wish they'd just add support natively.
I do all my controller configurations correctly but when i press play, it opens Minecraft on a second screen and the controller...doesnt work. I still have to use my track pad.

@@zorulka3663 try this "Open up the launcher (either from steam or from your .exe file) and select your regular minecraft profile from the dropdown (most likely you'll already have it selected, you'll have to do this for every profile that you'll want to use with the controller) and then select "edit profile".
This will bring you to the profile editor GUI and all you simply need to do is under the first section, select "Launcher Visibility" and chose "Keep launcher open". This will force steam to think you're playing the launcher "game" after you launch the real Minecraft instance and allow you to use configurable controls in-game."

When you're in manage shortcuts, click on "controller options" and uncheck both boxes. Press okay. Then go to your controller configurations and you should hover over the layout you want to use for minecrafft; export the layout to the personal use section. FINALLY you want to back to the home menu in big picture and go to settings. Click on "base configurations", next click on "desktop config" and make your minecraft layout the default. Had trouble figuring this out for the longest time then it finally started working for me

MysticTerror394 It just brings up my normal profiles instead of a Twitch one. However, I found a different solution. I just added Controllable by MrCrayfish to the modpack.

When I load up Minecraft and try to test my controls, the changes haven’t stuck. My controller is still not connected to Minecraft. I have suspicion that it is due to the game, in steam being labeled Minecraft Launcher, rather than Minecraft. If this is the case, how exactly do I find Minecraft? If it’s something else how do I fix that?

Try turning steam overaly on, the controls stopped working in the launcher for me but they worked in the actual game after that.

sabbath ravzi same i know you can probably close a tab through your tab manager (if it weren’t loaded thru steam it would be the Minecraft launcher tab) however i dont what tab I should close to load past the mojang screen

Great tutorial, but for those reading, I recommend mods.

@@sleepingturtle32 Managing your inventory is a nightmare because you have to control your cursor with the joystick and there's no quick way to manage your inventory. I recommend Mr. Crayfish's Controllable mod, although it's still not as good as the Bedrock Edition controller support.

@@rokano lol I actually got used to the steam controller controls and turned up my mouse sense so that I could get through my inventory quickly and I won like 3 bedwars games on hypixel...

You have to launch it without using your controller and then use it when you load in
@@jefferyblanton5456 use your mouse on steam when your not in big picture mode to start it and then click play with yo mouse and it should work with controller once you start it but make sure you start it from steam

U don’t need to set the steam thing up on Mac it worked for me without when I had a Mac about a year ago
As Valu yeah but my controller isn’t even vibrating, it’s not connecting to my computer in any way. I’m using a data transfer cable which is what’s supposed to be used and I’ve tried multiple controllers and drivers. Nothings working. Is there someone I can call to help me out or something

mine kept freezing every time the in game overlay notification popped up. I fixed it by disabling the overlay in the steam settings

Go to settigns on steam, go to in game and uncheck the enable steam overlay. It should stop.

That is not a steam issue, You need to go to Task Manager and end the Minecraft Launcher

I have followed everything you did down to T and the controller works when I am in steam but as soon as I open minecraft through steam the controller shuts off and stops working

@@yes7436 yes, but i think controller players have an advantage in terms strafing, because of the 360 movement thing of the analog stick, compared to wasd keys

i can't find the minecraft.exe file, only minecraftlauncher.exe
when i tried launching the game with minecraftlauncher.exe the minecraft launcher started, (not in steam), and i could only mess with stuff using my mouse. i started the launcher anyways and the controller didn't work, even after configuring it. i have no minecraft.exe file, i've looked everywhere for it. any ideas?
edit: solved the problem, just downloaded the minecraft.exe file from minecraft.net :)

you'll still have all your worlds and you'll keep the launcher.exe too, it doesn't mess with your game. just use the minecraft.exe file instead of the launcher and everything will work fine.

I don’t recommend playing using controller with mods, as if you have a lot of mods that have keybinds that are vital but require keys such as Q or / or whatever, and on a controller you only have like 4 buttons so, be careful.

This method has worked for me in the past, but today when I tried again everything but the controller stick was working fine in Minecraft. The controller stick was working in the calibration settings just not Minecraft.
Just a thought idk if it will work, try resetting your controller. Not repairing, reset it and then repair it and see maybe it will go back to working...
