- One of my favourite ever laps of the Ring! No lap timers just pure fun! Power wise we were very well matched with him catching me in some of the slower corners.
It seemed like he had just as good a time as I did! Close racing and smiles all round, it doesn't get better than that!

The engine sound, is that so unique because of the exhaust or the cam? The sort of bang on upshifts really sounds amazing.
Jens _ its just the characteristic of the engine and the way its set up. It used to pop between shift with the standard exhaust and cam. Now it has a full stainless exhaust and still had 2 silencers!

Thanks mate! I guess the pops and stuff are more savage than normal because of that gearbox. I had to shift as fast as I could to maintain speed 😆 usually I have more mechanical sympathy 😁

Does your 'box have the cable clutch? I have a 1.6 and I'm thinking of a complete 2E swap, but not sure about the gearbox
Severijn van Lambalgen yes its cable change. Would no recommend this on a 1.6! Get the shortest ratio box you can. Standard 1.8 8v gti gearboxes are one of the closest ratios vw made 👍🏼
I'm planning to keep the original for now. But I meant if you had a cable or hydraulic clutch, not the rod or cable shifter ;) So far everything seems to indicate that any 020 should bolt up to the 2E

Nope! haha Worked out with the ratios in 5th theoretically I could do 196mph... did manage 145mph on the way home on the autobahn! :D
James Cope Haha that’s easily the highest speed I’ve ever heard of on a stock 8 valve. Any plans to swap another 020 in soon?
kmamercy i was flat out in 4th for about 2 minutes haha ill rebuild my original box. Or i want to build up a nice ABF engine so with that may go 02a/02j 👍🏼
@@Jimladvw christ I chickened out of my tuned 16v on the autobahn at about 135 think it was, really didn't feel right lol

Yeah the old girl does well, that power figure is a guesstimate, not RR. The swift defiantly had the legs on the straights. I dont know how they compare weight wise. But factor in suspension, tyres etc and it all adds up. we both had a passenger and full roll cage.

This one is an 020 ATH. From a 1993 1.9 tdi Passat with 75hp!
+James Cope Oh wow. I have a 020 ATH on my Mk2 1.8 Mono-Jetronic with 90hp and I was planning to use it on 8v Digifant engine 😬
crazy! you must get 50+MPG!
But 020 ATH is original gearbox on 1.8 Mono-Jetronic (RP), at least in Europe. But your 4th gear looks so long 😕
