- We begin the video with trains arriving Gilroy the evening before. We catch 3 of the 4 trains that do this run as it is rush hour only. Next morning we take our longest journey on Caltrain from Gilroy to San Francisco. I utilized train #403 from Gilroy to San Jose in a somewhat rough riding car, and then transferred to Baby Bullet train #703 from San Jose to San Francisco. The ride out of Gilroy is quite rural with lots of agriculture leading to suburbia the rest of the way. All road crossings, interlockings, stations, and passing trains are identified. Informative narration thrown on of course. This was an RFW ride that will never be repeated. I was glad to be able to do this long haul.
Love seeing this! I used to ride CalTrain to work from Burlingame to San Francisco back in the 1990's
That was a very pleasant, scenic-to-city ride, and I enjoyed your commentary! (new subscriber, Charlottesville, VA, a no-train-horn town due to medical center at confluence of two rail lines 😖).
Thanks for the video! I used to take CalTrain from SF to Stanford on Saturday for football games. They’d make a special stop near Town & country Shopping Center on Game days.
Thanks so much for travelling out here to show us some of our transit and trains. Since I grew up in Marin County and lived for awhile in Sonoma County I'd sure like to see a video on SMART. Also... I hope our weather was pleasant for you.
It was very nice weather. I dreaded coming back home to the humidity and sure enough that’s what I’m experiencing right now.
@@3985uprr I remember the first time I went back east. When I worked for the Navy, I went to Charleston, South Carolina in the summer. It felt like my lungs were filling with water.
Thanks for sharing the ride with us.
Great video!
Thanks!
Those White and Periwinkle Bombardier cars are former L.A. Metrolink cars. All Metrolink trains were 100% Canadian built until about 2015 with the cars built in Thunder Bay and the F59s built in London.
I’m glad you got down to Gilroy. It’s a very different world compared to San Francisco, almost as far as N.Y. to the end of Long Island. 😊
Just to add, I have visited Monterey a few times. The Monterey Aquarium is great and there is also aquatic life there, like Sea Otters.
I remember waiting for the Santa Fe at the Tulare St. station in Fresno. The locomotive had a low pitched horn. I'm not sure if it was an Alco PA or an EMD F unit. I really liked that sound. The 4449 has a similar horn besides it's steam whistle.
You saw it already?
Wow that is amazing that you witnessed southern Pacific number 4460 pulling a farewell excursion besides the engineer using the typhoon air horn did he ever blow the whistle I’m curious if the whistle was a three chime or a six chime
I didn’t see it. I just heard it on a record. It sounded like he had a six chime whistle.
SP had two overnights from Los Angeles to San Francisco, The Lark and The Owl.
Right. Coast and San Joaquin route
How’d you get to Gilroy? Did you stay there
Took the train there the evening before and stayed in a local hotel
When Hwy 101 was on Monterey Blvd. we used to call it "Blood Alley" because of all of the accidents. Also... How fast do the CalTrains travel? Did you measure with a phone app?
Their top speed north of San Jose is 79. South of SJ I believe it’s 70. It was hard to measure the speed while I was shooting.
@@3985uprr I didn't know they went that fast. That's as fast as BART.
They putting two emu in service on Sunday
CA is the world’s 5th biggest economy these days at $3.8 trillion.
That was a source a few years ago that I got that from, but it’s nice to know that it’s doing better
@@3985uprr it’s bigger than India. The reported death of CA isn’t true.
BTW, the Lark was the overnight train on the Coast Line, while the Owl was the overnight via the Central Valley.
Monterey is nice, but Carmel and Pacific Grove are also worth a visit if you’re there.
I noticed a lot of people with bicycles.
It’s incredible how much bicycle business they get. Biking is very popular in California, especially with the price of gasoline and the tough emission standards.
2:55 that bell sounds a lot like our "new" rotem 1828-1870 cars in boston. I hate those ebells. The older ebells on the 1700-1724 and 1800-1827 sounds better.
They didn't electrify to gilroy????
Nope. Only to Tamien. Gilroy will still be diesel with rush-hour service only for now.
@@3985uprr ohh ok
@@3985uprr They're talking about buying battery electric locomotives or MU sets for Gilroy.
They are planning on doubling tracking and electrifying it as part of CAHSR.
