The three quotes that stand out to me the most in this short: "What for you bury me in the cold, cold ground?", "Flattery will get you nowhere." and "I now pronounce you Devil and Devilish." The deadpan nasally delivery on the first two lines by Mel Blanc is comedic gold. And something about that last line is supremely amusing given the boorish nature of these two Tasmanian Devils.

Far better than the Loony Tunes from the 80's onwards. For one thing the originals from the 40's to 60's were filmed at 24 fps. First the crew would film themselves acting out what they wanted to draw. The ones from the 80's on video for TV were filmed at 18 fps Their studio was next to the Warner Brothers Orchestra in a back lot because Jack Warner thought both were a drain the studio's bottom line. Merry Melodies and Loony Tunes had great musical scores because Jack didn't want the orchestra to have as little downtime as possible. Of course, the Warner Brothers cartoons made a fortune for the studio
As an actual Tasmanian, I'm impressed how they got the Tassie devil speech so accurate, even with the right accent! If you do happen to hear devils at night in the bush, they really do carry on like that- go down to Tassie and find out for yourself, fair dinkum!
Sadly, Taz wouldn’t return until 3 years later in Bedeviled Rabbit because the Warner Brothers animation producer/head at the time Edward Selzer (a notorious wet blanket) insisted on shelving Taz because he thought he was was too violent. Thankfully, Jack Warner, the president of the Warner Bros. Studio, noticed Taz’s disappearance and insisted that Taz be brought back as he was actually quite popular with audiences.

Robert McKimson has usually been the unsung hero of Looney Tunes, and a creative genius in his own right with Foghorn Leghorn, Speedy Gonzales, & of course The Tasmanian Devil, aka TAZ
He was a great animator for the Bob Clampett cartoons and had a great string of shorts as a director from 1946 to 1954 before they downsized his animation unit. Bob is just as integral to Looney Tunes as Jones, Avery and Friz

This was one of the reasons why he was fired back then, because none of them could stand working with Bob Clampett. The Devil may hare was actually written by Sid Marcus who he had success with in 1954 and 1955 with no parking hare and with the hole idea shorts. If it wasn't for Freleng snatching Foster who knows what legacy we would be looking at for Mckinson but he always had to be satisfied with the last of the quality because he was the final main director Warners hired.

It just shows that Sid Marcus can write good shorts like this one in additional to his time as director at Columbia (via Screen Gems animation studio) Lantz and DePatie Freleng. Both he and Art Davis who at this point was at Friz's unit as a animator would work together on and off for years at the studios thst both worked together. Sid was good with Robert McKimson as well who also was at DePatie Freleng eventually as well. Solid short and impressive debut for Taz.
When I was young I didn't realize all the characters in these cartoons actually exist. There really are tasmanian devils, road runners, and chicken hawks but of course they don't have all the characteristics the cartoons attribute to them. The road runner doesn't run so fast that the road wiggles as he goes around turns, bridges collapse and tunnels stretch in the direction of his motion, and cacti follow in his wake. Similarly the tasmanian devil doesn't really spin around, bore holes in rocks, trees, and the ground, and eat every animal in sight.
Watching Taz buzzsaw his way straight through the mountain range while Bugs ran along the top of it was one of the highlights of my childhood. Cartoon physics and geometry at its finest.
This episode holds a particularly special place for me because I grew up playing Quake 3 with a mod that added a Tasmanian Devil player model, and the model maker took the audio for his voice lines from this short, among others. "What for you bury me in the cold cold ground?" was a death line that I heard many, many times as a kid.
I remember reading a few years ago that the Tasmanian devil character is being used for fundraising in an attempt to save Tasmanian devils from extinction. It’s a fantastic use of the character.

I can remember Chuck Jones saying when the idea of creating the Tasmanian devil was put to him, he had no idea of what they looked like. The character was from Chuck's imagination. The executive at the studio, Ed Selzer, told Bob McKimson to stop making the Tasmanian devil because the character was too obnoxious. Jack Warner called Ed in and demanded, “What happened to the Tasmanian Devil?” Warner fumed that he’d better tell Bob to make more because there were boxes and boxes of letters coming in about the character.
Great cartoon...as were most of the Warner Bros Studios Movies and shorts that were produced...WB Star Errol Flynn was born in Tasmania and his father was a Professor of Marine Biology and Zoology at University of Tasmania..

Even after 71 years, these cartoons still hold up and are exceptional.

Mel Blanc was superb when it came to doing voice impressions and characterizations; a once-in-a-lifetime talent.
