Buddy's double tracked guitar and singing along with himself makes this unique sound. He was one of the first to use the Les Paul technique. He convinced Robin Luke to use it on Susie Darlin after hearing Robin's demo. It really gave the song a one of a kind sound. A one hit wonder that made number one. ( Susie Darlin, I mean). Buddy's demo tape of Words Of Love was made in the Clovis studio of Norman Petty but it wasn't released until after his death in 1959. Buddy had only two albums made during his lifetime, but Coral Records released several after Buddy's popularity in England increased from 59-63.. Other tapes were found in his New York apartment and released .. Paul Mccartney released the box set called The Complete Buddy Holly in 1985, but legal battles between Petty and Holly's widow caused it to be pulled from circulation. Some of the early box sets were sold to lucky buyers. I managed to get one. It's no longer available today.

The Beatles worshipped Buddy Holly, a genius musician. Their version of this excellent and very very catchy song is a perfect recreation. Holly's "True Love Ways" brings tears every time I listen to it. It could have been written and recorded last week. It's timelessness is absolutely astounding! Same goes for "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," which I believe was not released until after his death. Just watched "The Buddy Holly Story" starring Gary Busey (surprisingly excellent and brilliant performance....which caught me totally by surprise) was released in 1978!!! And somehow I had totally missed its existence until now. He actually played the guitar and did the vocals himself. But, I digress. This is about Holly's greatness. Who knows what he actually could have achieved had he not died so tragically and so young!!!

Buddy had, what I read on a 2015 quote from Don McLean ("American Pie", 1971-72), was an astronomical 50 songs recorded or partially recorded already on tape by the time he passed away. An unbelievable accomplishment who was only in the business for a month less than 3 years, starting at only 19- 1/2! He had so much material, his publisher had enough to go on for 10 years after Buddy died! No telling how many songs he would have written, performed or gone into publishing if he had lived just another 10 years. If he had lived to only 32 (Sep. 1968), he would have far surpassed any other group or band in the prime Rock era, 1958-68, including The Beatles or Rolling Stones if they had tried to compete with The Master, who invented the now-standard band of 2 guitars, bass, and drums. Buddy Holly was a genius, a legend whose music will be with us for all time. The preserved black and white and oft-shown clips of him with The Crickets singing "That'll Be The Day", "Peggy Sue" and "Oh! Boy" prove that not only was he a brilliant song-writer and poet, he was also a great showman with his whole life and career in front of him before that dreadful plane crash which also took the lives of Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson a.k.a. The Big Bopper. And he would never have been on that plane if only the 1959 Winter Dance Party tour had been properly organised. Buddy's records, so simple and plaintive yet at the same time melodic and full of joy, have certainly stood the test of time and even now I, as a 71 years old man, are still reduced to tears every time I hear "True Love Ways" which Buddy puts his heart and soul into, packed with so much emotion and to a glorious orchestral arrangement by the Dick Jacobs Orchestra too. R.I.P. Buddy, you will live on in the hearts of your fans forever. David, Crouch End, London N8

How can someone tell someone else what they like better? Music is an art form. I appreciate Buddy Holly’s emotion in his interpretation, and I appreciate the crisp and polished version that the Beatles produced.

Hi, but the Beatles remastered version that most people here on YT was not actually the sound the Beatles created with George Martin .... it was gorgeous but not quite so silkkkkky....that was not Lennon's style, at all.

    • @wsdfgesdfr5786

@@patricias5122The live version was used for the music video, so a lot also have heard the non-remastered version. Also let's not forget that you can't say "its not john lennon's style", this is the beginning, this is where he was heavily and more freshly influenced by Buddy. So it sort of was his style.

I mean to say that this is one of those magnificent numbers where you can feel the trace of Bo Diddley's enormous, genius musical flavor, but within or part of still another work of pure, aesthetic art in itself... one in which Buddy Holly has again taken a framework only a divine or semi-divine, possibly angelic, genius could construct and has built on to it something that is just a freakishly heavenly, as its foundation, if not beyond the boundaries of the divinely guided creation.

An iconic 50's pop standard. Buddy Holly's vocals take the forefront over the instrumentals as he overdubs a harmony with himself. Synonymous with most 50's music, the song is in mono with some reverb giving it that classic sound.

    An interesting fact:
look almost just like him. I’m from Texas, have a bit of a similar voice, and play guitar and some other instruments. I remember singing a while ago and my parents and everybody said I reminded them of Buddy Holly. Then my parents looked at my family tree. There he was. On my family tree. I’m also same religion as him. I’m a baptist he was too. And I realized that my father looked like buddy too. I am happy to be related to him. I impersonate him
    Some information about Buddy Holly:
Buddy Holly was only 22 when he died and sang since he was around 13. He was in a country and western duo with bob Montgomery for a while then he joined the crickets in late 1957. They had good songs together, such as, Oh Boy!, Peggy Sue, That’ll be the day, Everyday, and words of love. He was no doubt great at a lot. I don’t like him because he’s my relative, I like him because he has talent. I was a fan of him before I figured out I was related to him. But his band was mainly friends but he had his 3rd cousin by marriage join. Niki Sullivan was in there but then quit because he wasn’t a fan of the traveling. Then it was stuck with Buddy Holly, Joe B Mauldin, and Jerry Allison. Then the crickets got in a argument because Buddy wanted to record in New York. But Jerry and joe wanted to stay in Clovis New Mexico. Also Joe and Jerry were drinking a little bit. Then Buddy on a tour that took his life along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. Maria Elena Holly had a miscarriage and lost the baby. She was devastated and she never remarried again. February 3rd 1959 was then nicknamed The Day The Music Died. And there is some theories that Buddy shot The Big Bopper but there was no way it was possible for Buddy, Ritchie, or The Big Bopper to live. The last thing I want to say is....
    R.I.P
