- A regular day in April 2023 unexpectedly turned fatal for a local couple. Donna Ventura spent 12 days in the ICU before her death after eating lunch at Dave's Sushi.
51 people got sick from the under cooked mushrooms and 2 people died, How horrible. So Donna was one of the two who died.
So why leave such important fact out, why not interview others, why does her husband say “if he gets compensation” that’s a given if the facts you just stated add up. Not saying it didn’t happen but all seems a bit fishy

I work as an RN, and I remember a patient I had 12 years ago who ate under cooked mushrooms in a restaurant also. He didn't get into kidney failure, but I still remember how violent his throwing up was for about five hours no matter how much anti-emetic IV medications we gave him. He was back to normal in about fifteen hours, but he went through hell for at least twelve of them.
Wow great job helping the patient restore his health.
It can be the same reaction when someone eats a dead-before-cooking crab. Projectile vomiting for 8 hours, and a lifelong bad reaction reaction to the same species of crab.
I stay away from crabs and mushrooms.
OMG !!!
I’d say he was lucky to have a sensitive stomach that made him throw up before the toxins could attack his other organs.
*What about pressing charges?* This is much more serious & consequential than just a civil suit.
Truly - this was severe negligence I can’t believe it’s only civil
the husband does not decide if criminal charges are pressed its not up to him he is filing a lawsuit to hit the resturant where it hurts and to make people aware and doing so in his wife's name it was shut down 2 years ago when this happened but reopened and still had violations I agree it needs to shut down permanently that one atleast I won't fault the entire franchise
The district attorney is the only person who can press charges, how is a civilian going to force a district attorney to do that. That's why our only options is civil court for money.
@@markkulyas2418You mean the DA didn't file charges?
@@cheril8891 Civil and Criminal Law have very different legal standards. Civil law is a remedy in many cases where criminal law does not necessarily reach. I have no idea of every detail here but it seems likely that criminal intent was not there so it was a civil case.
The FDA needs to investigate the restaurant and probably close it.
They did close it. It was shut down for over a year. This didn't just happen. This happened over a year ago. It reopened recently and was given 5 violations after it reopened two of those being RFIs.
The FDA is Federal Government, they don’t go around investigating restaurants, usually local health departments do that.

This story made me cry for that Man.
I'm mean, it's a sushi place in a state that borders both Dakotas and Canada. "Good" is going to be a relative term for any ethnic food gotten there, which also likely means that the kitchen staff were not 100% familiar with the ingredients
@@trninfan Agree 50%, however Bozeman is the Los Angeles of Montana. We call it "Bozangeles". Further, Morels are very very popular and abundant here. Most laymen know they must be cooked.

ATTENTION!!!!!!
First and foremost my condolences to the affected families. RIP Donna Ventura and my thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this horrible negligence. I am a mycologist and hate to say it, but it is possible that the morels imported and served at the restaurant might have been contaminated by mold which can increase the amount of toxins contained in the morels. These morels were not domestic rather imported Chinese cultivated morels. Chinese morel mushroom farms have been found to use soil that is extremely polluted with heavy metals and they use harsh chemicals to control competing fungus, aka Fungicides, in addition to unsanitary packaging and handling. Please, please, please people do not consume raw morel mushrooms in any form or mushrooms that are imported from across the ocean. Always ask if the mushrooms are wild LOCAL mushrooms.
Thank you for that info
But I wouldn't even trust that they picked the right wild local mushrooms. As someone who is a toxic mold survivor ( mold and mycotoxins in my HVAC) I would just stay away from any possibility and avoid fungus all together. I clearly do not eat any since my system has been compromised by mold but I think people should be educated about the contamination in corn, coffee and peanuts too.
Of course they were from China! Eat anything from China at your own risk.
To the family, I'm so sorry for your loss.

morchellas are fine to eat if cooked and in this case they weren't. it is just unbelievable how something like this ruined their lives and Donna lost her own.
They are actually delicious. We call them wood fish or hickory chickens in the south. You have to fry them good. Never eat any that’s only been sautéed. This is horrible!
Agreed, most mushrooms are poisonous, but if safe-to-eat mushrooms are not cooked properly, then they are considered poisonous.
Oh. Morel mushrooms are delectable. They actually sell for $50 a pound. I’ve eaten sautéed morel mushrooms. So delicious. Plus, they look like little brains and distinctly like little brains and that’s how you know they’re edible morel mushrooms. Very fancy. Apparently much too fancy for a peasant like you. Only the bougie-est most experienced chefs even know about them. 😂
I had the privilege to go morel mushroom hunting in the boonies in Iowa with said chef. They cook right down to nothing. Like mushrooms do. They were the best mushrooms I’ve ever had. 2008. It’s time for morel mushroom hunting season again. They come out in the spring on fallen elm tree wood but everything looks like soil, leaves, and bits of wood where they’re found.
Hey Patrick, your genius is showing.
But what a travesty!! Raw morels??? They wouldn’t even taste good I bet!!! Even if they were fine to eat raw… NO!! Some delicacies are better and meant to be babied and slowly cooked! Peasants. Ugh.

With a quick online search, those mushrooms have poisonious compound, hydrazine, in their raw state. Why would they choose that mushroom!? Feel very bad for Donna and the other victims.
9Its ok to eat them since the cooking process gets rid of them. You got to cook them real good, and not undercook (risk of getting sick from the toxins). Some people survived it eating it after they felt sick believe or not. Unfortunate, they are a few that get sick and die.
@@crusaderforchrist8430yeah you’re just proving what they said - why on earth choose a risky food knowing it could kill people if not cooked properly. Stupid
I've wondered if they chose morels to make it seem "local" even though they were imported from China. Morels are one of the most popular wild mushrooms in Montana.
Morels are considered delicacies in my area. There is only one time a year when they appear. I would almost bet money that they were not morel mushrooms. They could have been false morels which look almost identical.
They're a delicacy everywhere. But I was thinking the same thing about them being false morels 😢
I am also from an area where they are a delicacy but it’s common knowledge that Morels can be poisonous if undercooked or eaten raw. They contain hydrazine which is highly poisonous when ingested. The cooking process effectively destroys the hydrazine. Things like drinking can compound the effects of hydrazine and essentially make the no more lethal. The husband said they now know they were raw which is the problem
Good info
I gathered morels in the woods near our home in Illinois about 50 years ago. We had so many that I dried them so I could rehydrate them and cook them later. I was a new bride from Texas at the time. What amazes me is that absolutely no one told me that the mushrooms were poisonous if not cooked. Smh. I guess everyone knew but me.
They were morel mushrooms. Six other restaurants in the California area received the same mushrooms that Dave's received. The difference is they fully cooked their mushrooms while Dave's were raw and undercooked. They made several people sick on different days and not back to back.
Dave Sushi was only closed 1 month for an investigation by the Health Department. The mushrooms sickened 50, hospitalized 3 and killed 2 people. 3 Lawsuits have been filed. Quietly reopened May 25, 2023. There are 95 employees. This is not a small operation. Popular place in a college town. The Morel Mushrooms were purchased from a distributor out of California.

This shouldn’t be “if he wins the lawsuit”. They should know what they are using in their foods. Each ingredient and mushrooms of all things should have been checked thoroughly as many are poisonous. Awful situation due to negligence
They came from a legit seller in China supposedly. Merrell mushrooms are never poisonous.
Edit, I did some research and I’m not quite sure if they got it from a local forager or what, because it sounds like somebody local in Missoula was for Jean from Merrell and undercooked his morales on a camping stove and died because of it too, even though his friends did not. It turns out the rocket fuel poison that dissipates when you heavily cook, males, builds up in the body and, some people bodies have accumulator too much and then it crashes, and other peoples bodies have ever reached that threshold yet, and they can handle it,
it wasn't the mushroom itself its how they prepared it that made it dangerous but yeah if they don't know that that particular mushroom raw is deadly they got no business working with food
It was the way it was cooked
How were they supposed to know that raw mushrooms are deadly, when they are literally being served 100% raw at most salad bars and also on veggie platters from local markets? Unless they picked these mushrooms from their backyard, I don’t see how they could’ve saw this coming 🤷♀️
That's exactly what it was!
That restaurant needs to be shut down if it isn't already. There are too many jokes about people needing health care when eating sushi that I am wary of any establishment serving it. If I were in Japan or knew the chef was extremely well trained and experienced, maybe I would eat it. But this didn't seem like a metropolitan area where someone with that level of skill would be working. So sorry for your pain, suffering, and loss.
