I’m so glad to hear you talk about this stuff with Dresden! It annoyed me so much when I read the first two books that I stopped reading, and it’s been driving me crazy that so many reviewers hype it up without talking about how annoying the male gaze is!

I think many reviewers do talk about his male gaze, especially in the first two books. It is something that is wildly discussed since the release of the books that Butcher took notice and toned it down throughout the series

I don't know if you like book recommendations, but from what I've seen of your videos I could definitely recommend those books to you (and everyone else who's into fantasy) :
    - Night Watch (by Sergei Lukyanenko): russian urban fantasy
    - The Riyria Revelations (by Michael J. Sullivan): fantasy, the protagonists are two thieves (and a princess) (I love this series, but I'm not sure if it's your cup of tea, because magic comes in quite late)
    - Skulduggery Pleasant (by Derek Landy): urban fantasy about a talking skeleton detective, lots of magic (from the first books it seems like it is, well, for children, but it's still hilarious and gets darker quite soon)
I only have discovered your channel today, so I hope I didn't overlook you already read them, but they weren't in your fantasy book tier ranking , so...
Does anyone else love those books?

For the Dresden Files, the male gaze is always a little bit there. I think this is because it’s modeled on older, “hard-boiled detective” type novels. Femme Fatales are a huge trope. I think it just depends how much that element is going to bother you. Personally Grave Peril is my least favorite Dresden book, I think the series really picks up in book 4, Summer Knight. I agree the series isn’t the most amazing, but it is cozy and fun and I like returning to it. I think it gets better and better.

    • @nataliaweronikapetersson3425
      @nataliaweronikapetersson3425 4 года назад +2

Agreed. If one decides some trope is going to bother them, there is no remedy for that. Simply not a book for you. Femme fatale is a trope that seems outdated in this day and age but I do not think it is more disturbing than "child assassin" trope that is so popular now. In 10-20 years people will be like: how can people enjoy books where children are murderers?

Also opinions on the Poppy War, I liked how Kuang really stayed true to Chinese history and language and culture, but at the same time it was almost a little too close for me? But it is probably more enjoyable and creative for ppl who aren't majoring in Chinese lol. Still a great first book in a series tho

So, I just read all 15 Dresden File books in a month and a half to be ready for the new book "Peace Talks" on Tuesday.
The male gaze stuff does improve but it doesn't ever go away completely, Harry is straight up just the type of guy that checks out women. It's worst in Blood Rites where Harry is on the set of an "adult film". However, Harry really does start to evolve and is slowly becoming more self aware.
I know five books sounds like a lot but if you finish "Death Masks" and don't feel the need to keep reading and see where the story leads then yeah, go ahead and put it down, the series likely isn't for you. The fifth book is where the story really starts to show the world opening up and hint that there are several stories interconnected. I also think that you get to see a side of Harry that you've really only had glimpses of until then.
That said, book seven "Dead Beat" for me was where I couldn't put the series down. I read only the Dresden files from that point on, and I am so unbelievably excited for the new book!

Ooooo, Grave Peril was absolutely excellent. It really amped everything up and in book 3, I found it brought the tension to Dresden and made it more personal. I loved how Michael featured in that installment, he helped balance Dresden's personality and they had brilliant banter too. :D (Haha I just got to the end of the video & you didn't like Dresden LOL, I didn't like The Poppy War. Usually our tastes align but clearly not this time!) XD
If you're after grimdark, Joe Abercrombie does it super well. He's usually recommended when grimdark comes up but it's for a good reason, definitely give The Blade Itself a try if you feel so inclined!

I'll be reading The Poppy War later this month, so I'm excited to see your reactions to it. I've watched your video for (literally) years, and based on your tastes I've observed, I don't think The Dresden Files is right for you. I'm saying that, even though I'm a BIG fan of The Dresden Files. Your biggest pet peeves about the male gaze and the awkward interactions between Harry and the Fae don't get any better. There IS more of Michael (and other great characters) later on in the series, and the world fleshes out a lot more, but I don't think it will be enough for you. I legitimately believe the author does these things intentionally because of Dresden's personality, but that doesn't mean you should force yourself to read it. I should mention, I "read" these books on Audio because I love the way James Marsters narrates the books. If I'm physically reading the books with my eyes, I just don't enjoy them as much. I think that's because it's easier for me to get into the male perspective if I'm hearing a male voice telling the story. Sorry to go off on a ramble, but I always maintain "Read what you like". And just because I love something, doesn't mean anyone else has to. Hope that helps!

I'm really conflicted about The Poppy War series, I love the plot and twists and world but since I can't relate to the main characters (which is the point really and actually paradoxally one of the reasons why I love this book and find it refreshing ) so I'm not as emotionally invested as I could be and can't give it 5 stars.

I started reading Dresden Files about a year ago and had similar problems. To me, Summer Knight was the first book that really hooked me (because faeries) so I would definitely try that one before giving up completely. All the things you mentioned you liked about the series truly does get better and better with each book. While there are still a few moments of “weirdness” in regards to female characters, I do think it’s not there as much as it is in the early books. And as the series progresses, I think Butcher takes care to note that whenever Harry is thinking something that is considered questionable, he is pretty self-aware of why that is and acts accordingly. It isn’t perfect (especially in the beginning) but for me it did improve, and the plot/characters/writing was so good that I didn’t want to put it down.

It doesn't matter when you stop reading a series.
I stopped the House Of Night one, for example, as I was done with the 9th of what 11?
When it starts to become uncomfortable and just annoying, it doesn't matter if you stop reading the series after the 1st, the 3rd of the 5th book.
The moment you feel like 'I have better things to do with my time and better books to read than THIS ONE.' That's the time to close the book, put it aside and check on your TBR- pile for a new reading adventure.

    • @bookschocaholic

I DNF'd House of night 6 books in! I couldn't fathom reading 6 more with how badly written the sixth one was!!! I know people who DNF trilogies 2 books in because they don't like it. It's totally fine. No one should feel contractually obliged to finish a series just because they decided to check it out. 🤣

Hi, Regan. I would suggest trying book 4 of the Dresden Files. That is where I really started to like it because I felt like the lore and magic system became amazing. I also really love book 5 because it has some of my favorite scenes in it! But if you don’t like it after book 4, I think that would be the time to stop.

  • @sarahteter524
    @sarahteter524 4 года назад +12

So I’ve just reread all The Dresden Files in anticipation of Peace Talks. There are times Harry’s point of view, especially toward women, isn’t horrifically offensive but is annoying. That said, he does grow through the series and the early simpler books definitely set the stage for the most recent 5 or 6 which are sincerely insanely packed with factional drama. There have been times when his view of a character that he’s known a long time and eventually mentors drove me insane but then I think it actually became an interesting conversation on power dynamics and age in relationships. I agree with the male gaze pulling you out of the narrative and rereading this after like 5 or so years I questioned whether I still enjoyed this series or not. I spent a long time during each of the earlier books struggling with this and during some specific later scenes. I do think I read mainly female authors now and that means I notice this even more now. I’ve started treating the male gaze annoyance as a study in not overly harmful but questionable things men are exposed to and discuss. Maybe I say not overly harmful because I have read it all and I’ve known and been the victim of some horrific things. I know that there are several books in a row where Harry is single for a long time because he wants a meaningful relationship and where some of his background is discussed for how he was raised with another young wizard female. I don’t think this excuses Harry’s views but I do think there are connections there that make sense for how he and some men think/act which isn’t horrific but can come across as disturbing despite what is definitely seen as “well-meaning appreciation”. As someone who wants to write as well as Jim Butcher does supernatural plots, I find this series to be highly enjoyable (especially the later books) and one to learn from both as an aspiring author and as someone who has had major trust issues due to certain male behaviors. Harry never crosses horrible lines, but some of his thoughts go right up against terrible borders (sometimes due to outside influence but not always) but if you’re paying attention to the whys of that (particularly if you’re questioning whether you’re comfortable continuing) there is a clear narrative about what both men and women of Harry’s age are sometimes exposed to and what results from those things. I am not commenting to convince you to read the series, I sincerely love it but ran into the same issues, I am merely hoping to let you know I get what you’re saying and I think there’s some awareness which is useful. My hope is that others who love this series could consider these issues. Also, I have yet to have read Laurel K. Hamilton, but I know Jim Butcher was being compared to her before he was even published (just based off genre and his original choice of city setting prior to switching to Chicago) which makes me question a bit of what is expected from the genre especially when the books were first written because if you look at Hamilton’s works you see there are expectations of paranormal mystery/urban fantasy genre regardless of the author. I hope these “gazes” evolve with time. There’s a lot to appreciate in human bodies, but there are creepy lines everyone is capable of rewording as the mythical beings don’t need to be an excuse for said. (I’m sure vast quantities of this are worded poorly or jumbled due to typing on a phone quickly having literally just finished Skin Game, but I hope some of this made sense.)

I read the Dresden Files back when they came out and I loved them. But also times have changed, so I don't know what I would be sensitive to now that I wasn't then. But you don't like them, don't read them. No one should read anything they don't like, just because other people like it. There's not enough time for that!

I really love the Dresden Files. For me its all about Murphy 😂😁 i really love her as a character and she got more and more importance in the series. I love Michael and his Daughter in the next books. I got really involved about the next books in the series. I really understood your problems with the early books, but in my opinion the context of the time they where written is also one of the points. In my Opinion Butcher learned a lot about writing women as characters.
I re-read the Books at the moment, and for me, the women in the early books, are not that bad written, but my problem is that Murphy got not that much "screen" Time in there , even she is a great character. And thats sad, cause she is very strong and cool.^^ Maybe read book 4 aswell. But yeah, when you don't like it, no one needs reading books, she*he doesn't like^^

The Dresden Files is definitely worth continuing! I say make it to book 7 or 8 and if you still don't like it then stop reading. But I think if you continue, you will not be disappointed

So for The Dresden Files, the male gaze is somewhat always there, I think it tones down as you go, aside from maybe the 6th book (adult film set), which is my least favorite. The 3rd book was also near my bottom. On the other hand, the 4th book is one of my favorites in the series. It’s when you really start getting into fairies, which I’m totally into, so if you’re into that you’ll probably like it more. Honestly, I would suggest The Dresden Files in audiobook form. I’ve both read and listened to them, and I find the narration of these to be superb. So yah, I thought 4 and 5 were pretty good. 6 gives essential info, but not a huge fan of the case, and 7 is amazing. I know some other (male) you tubers also were a bit bothered by the male gaze and were going to give up after 6 (again, horrible male gaze), but really flipped a switch after 7. I know that’s so many books to go through, but it’s been one of my favorite series to date!!

Want to give these a look. Like the idea that how the magic works is described. A lot of fantasy writers use james Frazer type ideas. Sympathetic magic, law of contact, law of contagion.

I DNF'd the Dresden Files series in the third book right after the vampires were introduced because I just could not anymore with how women were written in the series. I think I felt exactly the same way- there was so much that was fun about this series but it was also really pissing me off lol.
Also I really really need to finally read the Poppy War!

Regan you should look into The Last Necromancer by C J Andrews. It's only a 10 book series and I'm only on book 1 but it has some romance with a paranormal element. And don't feel bad, I have read The Poppy War yet.
