That was a clean genuine shot by anyone's standard. But the fact it was throw by arguable the hardest hitting heavyweight ever is testimony to Larry Holmes championship qualities to survive it. He should not of been able to get up from that.
I agree No Way He should have gotten up from that. I remember Holmes saying years later that Earnie hit him so hard that it actually woke him up. This is what I feel puts Larry Holmes ahead of so many other great Heavyweights. Lennox Lewis got KO'd twice by lesser fighters in his career. He did come back and avenge both of them but the point is he got beat twice in his prime. Larry never lost in his prime. He was 35 and in his 7th year as Champion and was making his 21st title defense when he lost a controversial decision to Michael Spinks. All his losses were when he was past 35. Got up from knock downs against Kevin Issac and Renaldo Snipes as well. Survived Cooney's bombs and low blows. Fought back hurt against Mike Weaver and Tim Witherspoon. He was all business and always seemed to have that chip on his shoulder but that's what made him so hungry. The Mike Tyson fight is really the only fight that he was never really in. Remember he was 38 and coming off a 21 month layoff when Don king offered him the fight for 3 million.
@Jim Jones Fury had no control over his body an actually didnt beat the count. They cheated for Fury twice cuza the hype. He was a bloody mess against Otto
Very underrated fighters lot better then ali possibly the greatest jab in the history of the sport and shavers could hit as hard as anyone just ask ali I think his punches made ali into the mush mouth he became alone later in life the Easton assassin one of the best
What you sayin Bruh, Gerry could bang some, he beat Patterson, Ron Lyle, Mac Fostor, Thad Spencer, Billy Daniels, Buster Mathis and many others...he had 32 kos out of his 51 wins, so not devastating but definitely under appreciated re. Power.
Larry Holmes possessed the greatest jab the heavyweight division has ever seen. He really is one of the most underrated fighters/boxers of all time. He hung on too long and people remember the flabby body but outside of Ali and Louis, Larry in his prime may have had the best heavyweight boxing skills ever. He might be a top 5 heavyweight and no doubt a top ten all time.
That’s arguable, I would say Ali, longer and more natural, Holmes’ is definitely top 5, Bowe had a great jab as did Foreman, Liston and Seldon (I know, Seldon wasn’t great but his jab was a missile)
Larry Holmes was knocked out once in 75 fights....by Mike Tyson. Every other fight he lost was lost on points against good calibre fighters (Holyfield, McCall, Spinks, Nielsen) and some of those decisions were pretty controversial. So even though you can say he perhaps fought too long he was still a serious customer pretty much up till the end of his career.
Carl williams, tim witherspoon, ken norton, spinx... You tell me what about losing to/arguably barely winning against all of them screams top 5. Not to mention the only person on his resumé is cooney
Shavers was the best heavyweight never to be champion imo. He fought every top fighter of his Era beating many. He was a punch away from being victorious in this fight.
I still remember this fight like it was yesterday. Ernie shavers landed one of the hardest right hand punches I’ve ever seen. I don’t know Home‘s got up. That’s the type of punch they’ll make you forget how to tie your shoes.
Great van. Thanks for putting that together! Had no idea that fight was such a war. I’m definitely going to go back and watch the whole thing now. Keep up the great work
What a lot of people don't know is when Shavers connected with Holmes at the 2:15 mark it was a picture perfect right hand as Larry was stepping right into the punch Larry was knocked unconscious on the way down but he hit his head on the canvas and it woke him back up just that fast.. You can see he was groggy but he recovered and went on to win the fight. Now mind you I did not know this at the time but to my fortune I was taking the train from NYC one night years after this fight as I am walking to catch my train in Penn Station I notice a older gentleman struggling with his luggage headed to the same train. I asked him if he needed help he said sure. It turned out the older gentleman was the Late Eddie Futch who was Larry Holmes trainer and in his corner that night. I brought that particular fight up and the right hand that Shavers threw and Mr. Futch said no way Larry would have gotten up without him hitting his head, he said Larry was out cold! Mr. Futch said Ernie Shavers with a bit of luck would have been Champion that night!.....
The acorn was a tough nut to crack but Larry showed why he was such a great fighter and a true champion against Shavers.. In his day Larry ruled and that's how it's measured though people like to talk shit. Woulda coulda shoulda but Larry proved he was a Champion against all comers. What more can you say
Never really liked Holmes, but I give him credit, he was a great boxer, perhaps one of the most underrated. He didn't have the Shavers or Foreman punch, but he was smart and had an effective jab. I was 19 year old this fight, remember it well.
Shavers, the hardest puncher in boxing history according to most, his right hand was murderous, he was called "The Black Destroyer" for a reason. He was definitely a dangerous opponent for anyone.
lofay gang None of those guys hit harder than Shavers man, lol. The only person who could possibly have hit harder was Foreman. Shavers had one hit KO power. 68 of his 74 fights came by way of KO. 33 in the first 2 rounds. He had an absurd 76.4 KO percentage. Guys like Ali and Lyle have said he was the hardest puncher they ever fought, and they both fought Foreman.
Look at the tight compact radius of Holmes' hooks and uppercuts compared to the wide circular but still extremely powerful punching of Shavers. The defensive/offensive footwork and jab of Holmes were at their height of perfection. Great boxing performance of both Holmes and Shavers!!!
Shavers got a detached retina early in this fight. He had it corrected by laser surgery in 1980. He said he had a hard time seeing Holmes after the 6th round
The greatest single right hand punch of my time, irrespective of the fact he got up. Holmes had incredible powers of recovery. Twice more I saw him on his arse, both from tremendous rights against Snipes and Tyson, and he beat the count each time. It was in this fight, when Holmes has Shavers in trouble near the end and the referee momentarily intervenes, that British commentator Regards Gutteridge, apoplectic in outrage, splutters "I don't believe this! The referee's asking him if he's alright! How's he supposed to know if he's alright!?"
Shavers was a powerhouse 💪... But Power alone isn't enough... You have to have heart♥... Stamina.. Speed.. Ring awareness.. And endurance.. I truly enjoyed this 💯✌💗
Larry's legendary jab ,precision power shots and pretty freakin awesome footwork! there are no heavyweights today that compare to the fighters of this era.
A boxer in an interview said he fought foreman Lyle and Shavers. He said foreman’s and lyles punch was thudding power but he said shavers punches were shocking power…they would literally shock you.
ANY other heavyweight in that ring that night, and Earnie Shavers would have been Heavyweight Champion of the World! Larry Holmes' recuperative powers were absolutely amazing!! No one else would have even gotten up from that shot in round 7.
I got this from a reliable source who happened to be the Late Eddie Futch the trainer for Larry Holmes and in the corner that particular night fighting Ernie Shavers. I was lucky enough to be catching a Amtrack train to Wash D.C back in the early ninety's when low and behold as I am walking through Penn Station in NYC I see this older gentlemen strugging with his luggage so I asked if he needed help he says " I sure do." We happened to be getting on the same train, he was going to Philadelphia so of course we introduce ourselves to each other he said he was Eddie Futch, I knew I recognised him but I was not thinking it was him until he said it. One on the nicest men you ever want to meet. So anyway of course we started talking about fights and I remembered this fight and the perfect right hand that Ernie Shavers delivered to Holmes jaw. I asked " Mr. Futch how in the heck did Larry not only get up from this punch let alone win the fight? " Mr. Futch said not to many people know this but when Shavers delivered the perfect punch he said Larry was knocked unconscious on the way down but fortunately for him he hit his head on the canvas just that fast and it woke him back up and he recovered just enough to go on and win the fight over a tired Earnie Shavers....you can take this story to the bank. Larry Holmes was a great fighter and champion and he make not acknowledge this story but according to Mr. Futch r.i.p this is what really happened. If not for this fluke of Larry hitting his head on the canvas to awaken from almost certain deep sleep... Earnie Shavers would have been champion that night!...
Tony Connor Angelo Dundee said the same about Ali in the first Frazier fight. Frazier knocked Ali out in the fifteenth round, but hitting the canvas on his back revived the Champ. He was on his feet at the count of four and managed to finish the fight. These guys had amazing powers of recuperation.
In many of his fights, Earnie Shavers capitalized on his lethal looping right overhand with full force. Imagine the energy loss if he missed the target. Holme's brilliance, as far as I noticed, is to carefully measure the range of his opponents and hit, jab, and upper cut them at ease.
Matthew Baca Homes is not overshadowed by Ali’s legacy. Holmes came on the scene after Ali and the greatest heavy weights of all time had all retired.Larry Holmes was a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali, and Muhammad Ali used to slap the shit out of him. When Larry Holmes finally beat Muhammad Ali he was 37 years old and already showing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
Hard hitter but not conditioned to go the distance. I see this a lot in boxing with power punchers there so use to training for power they lack in agility and stamina. U need all of the above.
What got Holmes through was his astonishing chin and recuperative powers. Shavers was always going to struggle down the stretch because he wasn't the best conditioned fighter ever, but a great performance from both warriors though.
The public never warmed to Larry Holmes because of his bitter personality and boxing style, doesn't stop him being in the top 5 heavyweights of all time for me.
@2:45 Larry started exactly imitate M.Ali's moves and jab. Ohh my goodness Shavers made himself tired with nonsense punches, where was his coach while wasting his energy? Not talking about last rounds...
Shavers was a very aggressively hard hitter back in his day and an extremely dangerous opponent in the ring. If you pay close attention to his style it clearly reminds me of how Marvin Hagler use to stalk his opponents down and if you pay thorough attention to how sharp he was he actually kept Hohmes a off balance and even slipped quite a number of punches while steadily delivering some very hard body shots upon return once the closing the distance. This wasn't no such easy task for Larry Hohmes that night but a very dangerous situation.. Shavers is probably by far one of the most underated fighters ever recorded in history among the greats. Even Ali evered his power.

One can always take a page out of the other's book and before you know it clearly remind you of the one who mastered and emphasized it before another generation comes along and take things to an entirely different level. Hagler's greatness came forth a tad bit later and I'm sure he was able to snag and perfect for himself a page or two from Mr. Shavers fighting prowess. Many among the greats are admirers of their pedecessors and are imspired to emulate them. I am from the Boston area where Hagler often trained. Joe Frazier is in the top 10. Joe Frazier got completely destroyed by George foreman so I can’t rank him higher than him. He lost two out of three to Muhammad Ali can’t so I can’t rank him higher than him. I would put Frazier around ninth or 10th on the list. I certainly rank Frazier higher than Larry Holmes. I just threw out eight random names that I know definitely rank higher than holmes on my first comment to this guy.
@@Ijustinsultedyou Marciano, are you on drugs 😂
HARD punching, great defense.
Thanks for posting this classic.
How the hell did Holmes survive that.
Shane Knowles skills
James Manning.sr.
It is one incredible punch.
I never tire of watching it.
Holmes was a superb champion.
Shane Knowles worked with larry years ago.been.with.some.big name fighters.Ali.mike rossman used.to.fight
Shane Knowles with a great chin.
Shane Knowles Holmes had one of the best left jabs that I have seen
Should not HAVE!!
I don't know about the heaviest puncher, but certainly up there with the best.
@Jim Jones Only thing with Fury he was really KOd. Shoulda been waved off. Holmes gor right back up. Fury was laid out then poped up
@Jim Jones Fury had no control over his body an actually didnt beat the count. They cheated for Fury twice cuza the hype. He was a bloody mess against Otto
I can't believe Holmes came back from that. What a heart.
"Some people punch so hard you don't feel it." George Foreman
LOL, came back from what? Did I miss the punch? I can't find it anywhere in this video...

Very underrated fighters lot better then ali possibly the greatest jab in the history of the sport and shavers could hit as hard as anyone just ask ali I think his punches made ali into the mush mouth he became alone later in life the Easton assassin one of the best
at the time ernie shavers was known to have the hardest right hand in the business harder than george foreman.........
Dean Vall blablabla
Dean Vall, so said many who got hit by Shavers and Foreman
shavers had no chin. which is why someone like jerry quarry could deck him in half a round
Power.
simon bedford Why wasn't there a rematch?
Took at least 10 years for him to get out of Ali's shadow and he did. He's one of the top 10 heavyweights of all time.
Ali had greatest jab
Larry Holmes was knocked out once in 75 fights....by Mike Tyson. Every other fight he lost was lost on points against good calibre fighters (Holyfield, McCall, Spinks, Nielsen) and some of those decisions were pretty controversial. So even though you can say he perhaps fought too long he was still a serious customer pretty much up till the end of his career.
Carl williams, tim witherspoon, ken norton, spinx...
You tell me what about losing to/arguably barely winning against all of them screams top 5. Not to mention the only person on his resumé is cooney
@@austinlittke5580 Cooney was mediocre at his best beat nothing but washed up fighters lost to top contenders KO'd 😴

The RESPECT Larry Holmes had for Earnie Shavers!!
Never a very popular fighter, but you have got to handed to Larry Holmes. Not too many would have survived this 2:15
Yep many fighter cant get up after get punched by shaver
Shavers was the best heavyweight never to be champion imo. He fought every top fighter of his Era beating many. He was a punch away from being victorious in this fight.
I still remember this fight like it was yesterday. Ernie shavers landed one of the hardest right hand punches I’ve ever seen. I don’t know Home‘s got up. That’s the type of punch they’ll make you forget how to tie your shoes.
Great van. Thanks for putting that together! Had no idea that fight was such a war. I’m definitely going to go back and watch the whole thing now. Keep up the great work
5:06, just freaking amazing. Shavers getting clobbered and puts Larry down with a grazing right .
Shavers exhausted himself throwing and missing so many bombs. But when he did land, good gosh!!! 😮
That Piston-fire left Jab from Holmes was no joke! 🥊💯
Larry Holmes the most underrated boxer ever. Larry showed in all his fight , his mentor Ali’s , heart conditioning, and style of boxing
Great story man!
The acorn was a tough nut to crack but Larry showed why he was such a great fighter and a true champion against Shavers.. In his day Larry ruled and that's how it's measured though people like to talk shit. Woulda coulda shoulda but Larry proved he was a Champion against all comers. What more can you say
Jasper Newcomb Yeah Larry could fight but to me he ducked Greg Page, Pinklon Thomas,Mike Dokes,Jimmy Young.and Gerry Cotzee.
Jasper Newcomb anyone notice a cornerman threw in the towel at 5.14 in the video.
@@dariushamid1533 Good catch.Wonder what the hell that was all about?🤔
Larry was dropped by Shavers in both their fights. I can see why Foreman never fought Shavers! That would have been great.
He was better than Thomas, Page and Young. Dokes?? Cotzee?? Please.......gimme a break.
Two tough, discipline and respectful boxers, loved the highlights, thanks.
Holmes had the greatest jab ever and he obviously had incredible heart in the ring.
LEGEND 🙌 🙌 🙌
He’s a good man today
Never really liked Holmes, but I give him credit, he was a great boxer, perhaps one of the most underrated. He didn't have the Shavers or Foreman punch, but he was smart and had an effective jab. I was 19 year old this fight, remember it well.
Shavers, the hardest puncher in boxing history according to most, his right hand was murderous, he was called "The Black Destroyer" for a reason. He was definitely a dangerous opponent for anyone.
I doubt he was the hardest puncher guys like wilder tyson lennox lewis bonecrusher tim witherspoon renaldo snipes most likley hit harder
lofay gang None of those guys hit harder than Shavers man, lol.
@@orlanzo2621 and alot of thoose guys he fought were unranked guys nothing special
@@orlanzo2621 Leave him,he doesn't know what he's talking abt..
Larry Holmes is definitely in my Top 7 ever and I do not care what y'all say. The man was good like that.
Nice background music too by the way.
Probably top 4
Holmes was absolutely perfect fighter
Look at the tight compact radius of Holmes' hooks and uppercuts compared to the wide circular but still extremely powerful punching of Shavers. The defensive/offensive footwork and jab of Holmes were at their height of perfection.
Great boxing performance of both Holmes and Shavers!!!
Wow, even when he was gassed out and in trouble Shavers could still knock you down. Great fight highlights.
Miss the days of WEEKLY great fights on TV. FREE. Real boxers and real punchers. No 6’10, 280 pound unskilled slow oafs.
Shavers got a detached retina early in this fight. He had it corrected by laser surgery in 1980. He said he had a hard time seeing Holmes after the 6th round
laura good that explains the wild punches that missed by two feet.
4:22. he actually glanced at the ref. to step in and stop the fight - ' he's done, man'! . thats sportsmanship like Ali's.
Damn these androids! Regards Gutteridge? That's Reg Gutteridge.
He didn't beat the count from Tysons last right, unless the count was a minute.
@@keebone True. But, then again the ref kept him from any attempt to.
He was also floored by mike weaver
Holmes didnt beat the count from tyson unless the count lasted the whole round
I was born in 1974 and my daddy watched all these fights. Larry Holmes had the best jab of all time.
Second best... his sparring partner may have had the best jab ; )
When heavyweight boxing was great. Either of these two would beat anyone around now. 💪
Only the baddest of the baddest can stand in front of shavers period.
Audience are more entertaining to watch then actual fighters....so much of vibes and energy from the audience....which you don't find that nowadays
Ningkhan Honest less distractions from social media and mobile technology internet and the like people engaged more in life around them ..

Shavers was a very good fighter! Got lost in the shuffle with Ali...Norton...Holmes...Foreman...what a puncher!!
I got this from a reliable source who happened to be the Late Eddie Futch the trainer for Larry Holmes and in the corner that particular night fighting Ernie Shavers.
I was lucky enough to be catching a Amtrack train to Wash D.C back in the early ninety's when low and behold as I am walking through Penn Station in NYC I see this older gentlemen strugging with his luggage so I asked if he needed help he says " I sure do."
We happened to be getting on the same train, he was going to Philadelphia so of course we introduce ourselves to each other he said he was Eddie Futch, I knew I recognised him but I was not thinking it was him until he said it.
Mr.
That's totally absurd.
@@philipvaughn1886 "That's totally absurd."
I know.
Thanks for the music. EETADIK!
Incredible war! Two ultimate warriors giving EVERYTHING they have! Much respect!
In many of his fights, Earnie Shavers capitalized on his lethal looping right overhand with full force. Imagine the energy loss if he missed the target. Holme's brilliance, as far as I noticed, is to carefully measure the range of his opponents and hit, jab, and upper cut them at ease.
This when Heavyweights ruled the Earth.
ElTerribleProduction , you make excellent boxing highlights, keep doing your thing , thanks.
Along with being a powerful puncher, Shavers could take it as well!
Christopher Kelly no he had a b class chin he would’ve got kod by Holmes and Holmes isn’t a big puncher
@@A27-c7u stfu with that stupid, weak chin, stfu u get in the ring then. Fuck
R.I.P Earnie, Hardest Hitter in Boxing 🥊🥊
I noticed that even when Holmes would get tired , his boxing skills still remained in tact and his stamina would bail him out when he was in trouble.
Larry Holmes is underrated, overshadowed by Ali's legacy. Truly great fighter.
Jupiter-8 not until he beat Mercer!
@2:45 Larry started exactly imitate M.Ali's moves and jab. Ohh my goodness Shavers made himself tired with nonsense punches, where was his coach while wasting his energy? Not talking about last rounds...
Damn.. Holmes stamina is something Else.
Even at 52, when he was fighting Butterbean! Out of this world.
Holmes is one of the greatest. I feel like he should get way more respect. He’s one of the Top 5 greatest HW of all time.
@E Button he learned a ton being Ali’s sparring partner and it def shows.
Shavers hits so hard he moves out of his way everytime he misses hahaha
Boy them body shots from Earnie
I'm surprised his liver didn't disconnect from his belly
Classy that Holmes went to Shaver’s corner after the fight. Holmes was a tough champion.

@@swedenoble6083 Every man is in a certain class of greatness among the greats. He was truly a deadly work horse in a much smaller division of fightes and punched like a tireless evereardy machine that just wouldn't stop nor could be.
2:07 what do you cal that overhead punch!
Why the knockdown moment was cutted now?
People really forgot how good Larry Holmes was
I didn't
If Cus trained Shavers, HE would have been a household name. AND Champion!!!
Man, imagine the shavers that went against prime Ron Lyle. Shavers had faster hand speed back then. Better sharper punching. Shavers was a bit over the hill against a young Larry Holmes in this fight...
I agree
shavers vs Lyle is a hidden gem of a fight and lemuiex vs Stevens is gunna a good fight too
the deal with shavers was he had a glass chin. watch his fight against jerry quarry. its over before most people found their seat
Shavers was never that good. He had a great punch but skill-wise he was fairly limited. Average chin and bad stamina too.
ames lucke
Both Holmes and Shavers at their best. Holmes would still win. Holmes had a great chin that is what saved him in this fight then his hunger and competitiveness allowed him to come back and win. Those are true championship qualities
This was a tough era in boxing Holmes made his mark no dought
holems won because he was better conditioned all shavers needed was a lil more energy and game over
Holmes won because he was a better fighter... better boxer period!
Shavers was just a hard puncher. A really hard puncher, but he had nothing against true boxers like Ali or Holmes.
SERIOUSLY....LOL!
ernie was 39 at that time and larey 26 thats why
Boxers age differently. It's about their style, how much have they been hit, how many wars have they been into.
Holmes was criminally underrated.
I never realized how bad of a boxer and how reckless and stupid Shavers was in the ring until this fight. The guy is completely unbalanced and just wildly swinging for the fences wasting valuable energy. He had Holmes in deep trouble but then went on to blow it by acting like a drunken sailor with those stupid swings hitting nothing but air and throwing himself off balance.
Still a better boxer then you
He had him and blew it.lost his cool,in the heat of the moment.
Ernie had a terrible trainer.
Unlucky guy , didn't have an expert trainers like you. Lol

Holmes had such a beautiful jab. Amazing he recovered after Shavers nailed his chin.
Holmes was more dangerous after he was hurt he has a fighters heart to get off the mat after being flatten and display that kind of heart your either born with it or your not!
Great stoppage by the referee. Hats off to both boxers, they were superb fighters.
Wow, shavers was so tired he couldn't defend himself.
Holmes left jab was monstrous , not many fighters could take it ; Holmes a fantastic under rated heavyweight, only second to Ali ,my opinion.
You never put me down Larry you never put me down Larry... Earnie Shavers and Ray Mercer two of the greatest unsung fighters of all time!! I mentioned Ray because they remind me of each other for some reason Ernie and Ray

But never the less my man *Muhammad Ali* fought every name on your list...
My opinion don't mean much to some, but you're a world champion to me Earnie...
Best thing Larry ever did in boxing was get up from that punch
Idk how these guys dont throw they're shoulders out of socket throwing those crazy BOMBS!
Shavers didn’t pace himself followed by the knockdown, but tried to knock Holmes out, then punched himself out
Shavers could put down Holmes with one glancing blow...no wonder all boxers said he hit hardest.
