Camp cooking without fire or electricity, with flameless cookers! Trying out Barocook & TrekMates

- My heart will always be in cooking over a campfire, but sometimes, circumstances (fire bans, stealth camping, bad weather) preclude that. Cooking with electricity is a fine back up, but consumes a lot of energy. So I thought I would try out those flameless cookers that I've been seeing, that use a chemical reaction to heat up your food.
I messed around with a Trekmates cooker, which is very similar to the Barocook brand, and also, just the Barocook fuel, in my own container -- a 3 part mess kit.
SAFETY NOTE: the pouches do say to ventilate your space when using them. I chose not to, and I lived, but that risk is there.

Not used, but discussed:
Barocook Rectangular Flameless Cookware System

Threestar Stainless Steel Canteen kit camping cooker flameless cookware - 💸 pricey, but wow!

Old Faithful Flameless Geyser Portable Cooking System - no longer available, but it looks exactly like the Threestar

Yabul Flameless Camping Cooker Kit - looks very cool, but I guess it didn't make it past the Indiegogo fundraising phase.

Also, I didn't mention them, but flameless cookers use technology similar to that used in military-style Flameless Ratio Heaters (FRHs). I didn't personally try them out. From what I've read, they're very convenient and fairly inexpensive, but put out less heat for less time. If you would like to try those out, here they are:

Hey, Martha. HUGE thank you for introducing me to flameless cookers, testing different models, trying less expensive hacks and filling in tiny but important details. I had no idea, and have been looking for off-grid options. Bright blessings. 💖
Welcome, and you you as well! ☺️
"I'm not a drug dealer...." I needed that laugh today. Thank you. 😆
I am so glad you did a full vid on this. That is a pretty neat little gizmo. I also love watching the korean camping vids. Mari Life is one of my favorite ones. I cannot remember the name of the other, but it is a guy that camps out of his tiny yellow suv. Going on my very first camping trip alone in the morning. Super excited!
Dentan / @dntn24! Love Mari Life too. Her videos are very relaxing. I also love @RirangOnAir, @bigbody9502, @campingG, and @jojocamping . Excited for your first solo trip -- have fun out there! 🥰
@@ShoestringMartha yes!!! Dentan!!! I will definitely look into the others you watch🙌 I will, thank you so much!
That’s very interesting! I’d never heard of such a thing. I agree, it’s not for full time use, but could work when I’m camping in my teardrop trailer in bad weather and can’t access the kitchen under the back outside hatch. I’ve used my Jetboil MicroMo to cook on my bed inside the teardrop.
@@ShoestringMartha CampingG is one of my favs. I like chatting and Marilife doesn’t.
Just a tip on the MRE heaters, if they are old and not heating well then you can add salt to the water and it will work better. It might work with one of those pads that you have if you happen to get another dud.
Awesome - thanks for the tip !
thanks i use them occasionaly also an just some education.
Happy to see this in detail... very interesting
The pouch is just a flameless ration heater, commonly used in MREs for multiple nations' militaries. You can buy them in bulk in the US online for a couple of dollars apiece, and the American ones work *extremely* well.
I was too cheap to buy FRHs for comparison, but judging from the research and reviews, the chemistry of these is a little different, and they get hotter for longer. But yeah, no firsthand experience to say whether or not that's actually true. 🫤
disposal is easy, most are made with active charcoal & some magneisum. as they spark when tossed into a fire. so burn em at home outside.
Interesting. That is definitely an option for cooking/heating food up inside a vehicle. Thanks for testing this out for us.
I love learning about these new cooking ideas. Thanks for sharing Sweets. Hope Gunther is better. xo
He’s back and fit as a fiddle, thanks to lots of rest and his new diet plan. He eats better than I do now 😂
LOL, I'm not a drug dealer...😂 Thanks for the laugh! I've never heard of a flameless cooker, so this was interesting to see. That 4Runner looks pretty roomy.
Funny, because I feel like it's a little tight -- let's just say, "cozy". Props to you to making it work in a car -- for an extended period of time, even!
Thank you for the info. Going to get the flame less cooker. Good for camping in areas that don’t allow fires.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for this, very interesting
One thing that you didn't mention, that might be of interest to folks that are living on the move, is that you can get this thing going while en route to your "camp" and have it be ready to eat when you arrive. Just set it in the passenger seat and let 'er steam! The Barocook has a totally leak proof lid so no spills on the upholstery. There is a heavy duty ziplock bag and heater alternative to the plastic and stainless bowl system with heater. It's sold by Barocook, as well. I like the soft cooler idea as extra insulation. Maybe even steam some buns in there for brats or hotdogs.
Yes! Gotta use all that heat while ya got it.
I have the same rig!!! Cool set up!
4Runner fam! 🫶🏻
Was curious about this when I saw some clips in the previous video. I'm considering giving the pouches a try. Might build my own kit for it if i can find the right heat proof components. Thanks!
Yes! Big fan of the DIY / custom option!
That wind!!!😮
It was BRUTAL 😖
@@ShoestringMartha The adventures and the elements that come with it.
28.5 grams equal 1 ounce. Not a drug dealer, I’m 70 yrs old and remember from High School Biology class! Lol the stupid things you can remember from long ago, but ask what I had for dinner 2 days ago!
Don't worry, your secret profession is safe with me. 😉 but seriously -- I know. I can still diagram a sentence. Remembering why I entered a room is another matter entirely. 😆
I am so happy you did a review of the flameless cooker. I've been looking for a flameless way to cook pasta in my SUV. Do you think you can boil water to cook uncooked pasta with the flameless cooker?❤
I’m not sure. 🤔 The food never got to a boil, just a simmer - but it does last a good amount of time, so… maybe?
A test may be in order 😏
@@ShoestringMartha yes, please. I saw in another vid that you cooked Ramen in the flameless cooker after soaking it first -- you mentioned you might not have needed to soak it first. I'm not sure how unsoaked ramen compares other pasta like mac noodles, penne, or something like fusilli. Thanks again!
Italian pasta takes about 8 minutes, and the ramen I used takes 4 - assuming the water is at a low boil. So I would think that either would be fully cooked in 15-20minutes of simmering. 🤔 But I’ll check on it. I also wanted to see if rice will cook from dry.
I wonder if you can use the packs in an electric lunchbox without using the electricity?
I thought about trying it with my electric lunchbox, but the metal insert fits pretty snug into the plastic shell. There need to be some space between the two for water, steam, and the expansion of the packs. It *might* be possible, with the right lunchbox.
@@ShoestringMartha thanks. I will try it.
Good luck!!
Wish I’d find tequila in my cooler 🎉
If you leave a lime wedge under your pillow, the margarita fairy might visit! 😄
Wish for El Silencio with an orange 🍊, they go great together. Just a swig.
whispering this question, ducking down: are the pouches hazmat afterwards or safely landfill disposable?
😄 … According to Barocook, used pouches can safely be disposed of in the trash. barocook.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205513258-How-do-I-dispose-of-the-used-heat-packs-
I don't think I've ever seen a mess kit like the one you used. Is it an antique? I have an old mess kit of my dads from WW2 and that looks nothing like yours. Very curious about it....
It is a post-war West German style mess kit. I got it many years ago as a gift, so I'm not sure if it's original surplus or a reproduction.
It's obviously very sturdy and I like the fact that it is deep...
Hey Gunther how you doing little buddy
He's back in action and even better than before! 🐶
One gram=one paperclip. 30 grams = 30 ml of water, about what you call one ounce. 1000 grams, same as 1000 ml of water, one kilogram, fits in the dimensions of 10 cm by 10 cm by 10 cm. One square cm of water, also weighs same as one paperclip..one gram. When we do dialysis, that's why we like the metric system: If you "take off" one litre? Well... That's the same as one kilogram, and the proof is when you weigh someone after dialysis... Litre/gram interchangeable when it comes to water! Temperature? One hundred mark, make that the water boiling point, make 0 the freezing point, make one hundred increments, and you're done! So much much easier. My question: Since it says "caution needs to be well ventilated" I wonder what gas that reaction is producing? All the Best! 73 DE W8LV BILL
All that stil makes my head explode 🤯 but the visual comparisons help a lot 😊
The chemical components vary, and the companies don’t disclose what they are, so it’s hard to guess what the by-product is. It’s my understanding that with the military ones, it’s hydrogen gas, so the risk is that it could combust, if exposed to flame. With these, I have no idea. I suspect they might be the “newer” style ones mentioned in this Wiki article.

Bottle opener, is that what they're called? I've only known them as a church key.
I have also heard it called that. You could use a church key to open a bottle, but you couldn’t use a bottle opener to open a can of pineapple juice 😄
@@ShoestringMartha -I once tried to break into a church with a bottle opener, but that's a different story..
Dog seems hungry.
Do not fall for the pitiful hound dog eyes 🥺 He already had his dinner AND he got some bites of chicken. 😃
