I pursued my PhD in quantum biology because of this stuff!
I wish I could learn like others😔.
I was a few years ago to Hortus Botanica, in Amsterdam and it's so unbelievable how plants helps us to survive. I didn't even knew that there are plants with the word cancer in the Latin name of the plant and can help against cancer.
I hope we will save earth and 1 day truelly respect mother earth.

@@LumbridgeTeleport Evolution has possibly the most proof of any scientific theory. It can even be simulated on a computer and work the same way there, or in mathematics. There is an interesting video (can't find it now) showing how a man scrambling over a fence can be simulated on a computer just with Newton's laws of motion and the goal of getting over the fence. It does take millions of tries, but the result looks surprisingly realistic. The trouble with a dogmatic religious approach is that it is intolerant of logic and evidence. Without good logic and a respect for evidence, dogmatism fails to provide any kind of useful understanding of nature or how it works.

You guys nailed it, it's so messy and nothing makes any sense! My lab mates disagree with me, but biological processes are just too damn complex and don't seem to follow any reasonable logic. I much prefer for there to be an obvious right or wrong answer.

If this turns out to be confirmed (as far as anything can be "confirmed"), it'll cement the idea even further that almost anything we try to do could probably be achieved better, easier, and cleaner with biotechnology.

Yeah, this and sound bytes talking about how it "changes instantly" are super misleading and really contribute destructively to a helpful understanding of quantum processes. It doesn't "suddenly change", since we have no way to measure BEFORE measurement (obviously), we have no way to know what exists before measurement, so we use metaphors and comparisons to describe things that we know we don't understand. This unfortunately turns into people thinking they understand something that they don't because of the imagery that the language evokes and is super counterproductive, which leads to things like needing to unlearn a bunch of incorrect stuff in order to understand things more fully, which is a huge waste of time, energy, and a roadblock to progress in general.
Measurement does _not_ require the particle to be affected. See e.g., en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interaction-free_measurement
Really looking forward to advances in this field as a molecular biologist who actually has stronger interests in physics. I'm trying to convince my supervisor to incorporate quantum biology into his projects! 😂

Take a good advice from someone who was at that point 25 years ago: don't bet your career on a highly speculative, but very likely anti-scientific topic. There is a good chance that' you'll ruin your entire career for the rest of your life. Do a demanding, but solid and less flashy molbio PhD. Highly speculative topics are typically career killers. You can still switch your main research topic later, if you find a proper (paid) postdoc position for it (although this is very unlikely, which is why it wouldn't be very smart to do a PhD upon it) . Once you are in the "esoteric"-drawer there is no way out of it.
@@frankschneider6156 There are plenty of counterexamples for your pessimism. Most of the biggest contributors in most fields of study did their work because they loved it and were good at it. We wouldn't have Einstein's contributions today if he had followed your advice, because the ideas he followed were speculative. Yes, finding QM in photosynthesis is speculative, but it is highly suggestive due to its high efficiency. We just don't have any other high efficiency theory to apply other than QM.
There is a big difference between speculating that the speed of light in a vacuum is a constant for all non-accelerating observers and speculating that the positions of the planets at the instant of birth determine aspects of the personality of every human being (astrology). Your narrow-minded comment makes no distinction between different kinds of "esoteric" or speculative topics, which is downright stupid of you. Sorry for my lack of tact.
I remember reading this several years ago somewhere. A single photon takes every possible path through some region of a leaf simultaneously, until only one of those paths transfers all of the energy; analogous to lightning streamers fingering through the sky until a single pathway allows the entire charge imbalance to be rectified through the single most efficient path.
Quite a profound thought but definitely helpful in understanding quantum electrodynamics and its crazy ways.
Here's another crazy thought..
What if the universe is really just the framework of a quantum computer cross referencing potentials of possibilities to calculate the probability of its own existence?
Possibility, potential and probability rule the universe, so what if that's simply all it is?
Surely just the mere notion of the possibility of existence would need a framework in which to be a notion, a mind in which to be pondered, some godly notepad on which to be mapped, plotted and calculated, or even just a universe in which to be lived out any infinite amount of ways...
The universe could, mind you, hypothetically, manifest itself just from logic if that ever worried you lol i.e. if nothing existed then possibility itself wouldn't exist... If possibility didn't exist then neither would the possibility of nothing existing.. therefore it is impossible for nothing to exist so the universe must exist. 😋
But, I mean really, back to the possibilities of the universe existing. A possibility is positive or negative and potential gives that qualitative concept a quantitative aspect.
Positive, negative, potential... they sound familiar.
To communicate and compare possibilities and potentials you need a way of communicating, or maybe, "radiating" your various potential within your framework, assuming it was potentials which were sharing energy between other as they do, measuring and comparing each other (what else would there be to do so?) If exchanging info meant exchanging energy this would lead to changes in their relative potentials. Change is the creator of time, and the exchange in info/energy would require re-radiation of updated energy levels leading to continuous radiation and endless change and the continuous passage of time.
There's my philosophical recipe for a universe haha..

I read Life on the edge a while ago, and the most interesting hypothesis I found was how smell might be quantum mechanical in nature. Hope you cover that.
Great explanation! But quantum tunneling happens just fine at room temperature (flash memory relies on it.) Is it just coherence that (seems to) need extreme conditions?
A coherent system leaks in entropy/disorder from the surrounding hot environment and quickly loses its coherence. That is why Bohm theory is so important: it includes the measurement devices as part of the experiment instead of considering them part of the environment.
That's amazing, so I suppose that the reason that plants grow so fast with much less biomass (CO2 from the atmosphere) is the fact that photosynthesis is so efficient

If you're after a good textbook on quantum biology, I'd recommend Mohseni et al. *Quantum Effects in Biology*.
If you think about it, most of the things plants do are "random" from the start because they have to try everything until something works. It's like the "probability approach" was extended to the macro world.

Everything is moving and a part of an overall pattern, in which make up its system, from particles and up to what it ends up being overall. I like that quantum physics, or entanglement/super position of particles, in which can create some pretty complex set of calculations of the overall system, that are more complex than what would take a supercomputer to calculate for over 10,000 years, in which utilizing quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics can calculate the same information in around a second. Quantum devices using entangled particles, in which more entangled particles, means more information ability and it can also work over great separated distances between them and can still operate, is also neat.
*For all the Math and Physics Geniuses* Yes, it is just too complicated for the average genius; since just the number of 'quantum' reactions in each of those cells, and notwithstanding just the chlorophyll *one,* is mind boggling! Mathematicians just aren't up to it, and should definitely stick with the addition and subtraction business and with other more geometrically inclined technicians of Science like the mechanics of Quantum. The technical hoi polloi, like mathematicians, have been relegated to being average - the 'Ho-hum' side of Physics, waving your mathematical explanations of failed predictions like the Big Bang Flags, Neutron Star Paradoxes, Dark Matter bete noires but look what they've done for you!?! They've (the Mechanics) reduced the whole process to *ONE* and you still hide your eyes and speak trash about it, and refuse to even understand one simple process ... it's just too messy ... best stick with pretending that you can add and subtract 0 and Infinity in something called 'Cosmological Calculation(s)' 'cause you've definitely joined the 'Unicorn crowd' with your 'inventions' ...
When you first said how the physicists laughed upon reading the paper, I was reminded of something I read regarding sonar. I believe it was in one of Richard Dawkins' books, probably The Blind Watchmaker, but I'm not sure.
Anyways, the point is that when sonar was first being developed, the idea that nature had 'invented' it thousands or millions of years before people worked it out was considered absurd, yet it turned out to be the case.

I am a Vegan and I believe that a Vegan World is not only possible but must happen if we want to save the planet and all that live on it. Photosynthesis has always fascinated me and it is imperative that we must understand the mechanics of it if we are going to build a Vegan World. Thank you.
Your guest is wrong. If life on earth truly was only possible with photosynthesis, then the very first life would have had to be able to do it, which we doubt is the case. Life as we know it, today, relies on photosynthesis. The ecosystem would be very different without it, but similarity is not the same as requirement.

Funny that I'm watching this video now after studying these papers for a seminar I gave on 2D electronic spectroscopy. I was going to say that there is a dispute over the quantum beats, but you did that already! Either way, regarding the path of the excitons, 2DES reveled that the pigments closest to the reaction center have lower energy than the ones far away, thus the exciton downhill pathway leads towards the reaction center.
Have you looked at REDOX Signaling/ROS (reactive oxygen species) and how they work within plant biology/physiology?

Well, don't all biological processes involve chemical reactions, which in turn can only be explained in terms of electron orbitals, which can only be explained with quantum physics?
Exactly what I was thinking. If quantum mechanics is the underlying theory of all physics, then everything in the Universe by extension requires quantum mechanics to work. As Jade alludes to the vast majority of the time, the quantum effects are abstracted and classical physics/chemistry is sufficient to explain a given phenomenon. But every once in a while, such as in the slit experiment, a proper explanation requires peaking below the covers a level of abstraction down.
7:35 Thank you! I hate when people say that a field collapses when it’s ‘measured’ or ‘observed.’ It makes QM seem mystical when in fact it is only slightly difficult to get your head around when you do the math.
Well it's still pretty darn counterintuitive, but it definitely helped clear some things up when I realized "measurement" is the wrong word. Decoherence occurs whenever particles interact with each other regardless of whether anyone is actually using that interaction to make a measurement or not.
@Lucky10279 Define interaction? The interaction with fields is always there. It's not mystical but it's still a mystery what "exactly" causes the collapse.

This reminds me of something a physics professor said when I was an undergrad. He said, "whenever we see a quantum effect on a macroscopic scale it is ALWAYS something really cool, like superfluids, lasers or superconductors". (Also I have always heard the combination of an electron and a hole pronounced "EXIT-on", not "EXCITE-on")
This video is awesome, it introduced many important concepts of quantum physics so intuitively. I guess we have lot to learn from biological processes that can help us build successful quantum computer.

I will enjoy haunting my middle school science classes' dreams with "reality" using your series. They often bring me a lot of internet conspiracy theories and odd questions, the most common among them, "Is water wet?" To this question I always summarize my explanations with a personal emphasis on relativity and scientific "truth"--
"Reality is much stranger than fiction kids. You definitely will never need to do drugs to flip reality upside down, because it already was but you didn't notice. If you actually use your imagination you will never be disappointed because life is plenty weird enough!"
My favorite teacher in high school used to say, "Please never say 'I'm bored' because reality lies undiscovered all around you and within you! Only boring people are bored."

My Current TOE:
THE SETUP:
1. Modern science currently recognizes four forces of nature: The strong nuclear force, the weak nuclear force, gravity, and electromagnetism.
2. In school we are taught that with magnetism, opposite polarities attract and like polarities repel. But inside the arc of a large horseshoe magnet it's the other way around, like polarities attract and opposite polarities repel. (I have proved this to myself with magnets and anybody with a large horseshoe magnet and two smaller bar magnets can easily prove this to yourself too. It occurs at the outer end of the inner arc of the horseshoe magnet.).
3. Charged particles have an associated magnetic field with them.
4. Protons and electrons are charged particles and have their associated magnetic fields with them.
5. Photons also have both an electric and a magnetic component to them.
FOUR FORCES OF NATURE DOWN INTO TWO:
6. When an electron is in close proximity to the nucleus, it would basically generate a 360 degree spherical magnetic field.
7. Like charged protons would stick together inside of this magnetic field, while simultaneously repelling opposite charged electrons inside this magnetic field, while simultaneously attracting the opposite charged electrons across the inner portion of the electron's moving magnetic field.
8. There are probably no such thing as "gluons" in actual reality.
9. The strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force are probably derivatives of the electro-magnetic field interactions between electrons and protons.
10. The nucleus is probably an electro-magnetic field boundary.
11. Quarks also supposedly have a charge to them and then would also most likely have electro-magnetic fields associated with them, possibly a different arrangement for each of the six different type of quarks.
12. The interactions between the quarks EM forces are how and why protons and neutrons formulate as well as how and why protons and neutrons stay inside of the nucleus and do not just pass through as neutrinos do.
THE GEM FORCE INTERACTIONS AND QUANTA:
13. Personally, I currently believe that the directional force in photons is "gravity". It's the force that makes the sine wave of EM energy go from a wide (maximum extension) to a point (minimum extension) of a moving photon and acts 90 degrees to the EM forces which act 90 degrees to each other. When the EM gets to maximum extension, "gravity" flips and EM goes to minimum, then "gravity" flips and goes back to maximum, etc, etc. A stationary photon would pulse from it's maximum extension to a point possibly even too small to detect, then back to maximum, etc, etc.
14. I also believe that a pulsating, swirling singularity (which is basically a pulsating, swirling 'gem' photon) is the energy unit in this universe.
15. When these pulsating, swirling energy units interact with other energy units, they tangle together and can interlock at times. Various shapes (strings, spheres, whatever) might be formed, which then create sub-atomic material, atoms, molecules, and everything in existence in this universe.
16. When the energy units unite and interlock together they would tend to stabilize and vibrate.
17. I believe there is probably a Photonic Theory Of The Atomic Structure.
18. Everything is basically "light" (photons) in a universe entirely filled with "light" (photons).
THE MAGNETIC FORCE SPECIFICALLY:
19. When the electron with it's associated magnetic field goes around the proton with it's associated magnetic field, internal and external energy oscillations are set up.
20. When more than one atom is involved, and these energy frequencies align, they add together, specifically the magnetic field frequency.
21. I currently believe that this is where a line of flux originates from, aligned magnetic field frequencies.
NOTES:
22. The Earth can be looked at as being a massive singular interacting photon with it's magnetic field, electrical surface field, and gravity, all three photonic forces all being 90 degrees from each other.
23. The flat spiral galaxy can be looked at as being a massive singular interacting photon with it's magnetic fields on each side of the plane of matter, the electrical field along the plane of matter, and gravity being directed towards the galactic center's black hole where the gravitational forces would meet, all three photonic forces all being 90 degrees from each other.

25. I believe there are only two forces of nature, Gravity and EM, (GEM). Due to the stability of the GEM with the energy unit, this is also why the forces of nature haven't evolved by now. Of which with the current theory of understanding, how come the forces of nature haven't evolved by now since the original conditions acting upon the singularity aren't acting upon them like they originally were, billions of years have supposedly elapsed, in a universe that continues to expand and cool, with energy that could not be created nor destroyed would be getting less and less dense? My theory would seem to make more sense if in fact it is really true. I really wonder if it is in fact really true.

Here is the test for the 'gravity' portion of my TOE idea. I do not have the necessary resources to do the test but maybe you or someone else reading this does, will do the test, then tell the world what is found out either way.
a. Imagine a 12 hour clock.
b. Put a magnetic field across from the 3 to 9 o'clock positions.
c. Put an electric field across from the 6 to 12 o'clock positions.
(The magnetic field and electric field would be 90 degrees to each other and should be polarized so as to complement each other.)
d. Shoot a high powered laser through the center of the clock at 90 degrees to the em fields.
e. Do this with the em fields on and off.
(The em fields could be varied in size, strength, density and depth. The intent would be to energy frequency match the laser and em fields for optimal results.)
f. Look for any gravitational / anti-gravitational effects.
(Including the utilization of ferro cells so as to be able to actually see the energy field movements.)
(And note: if done right, it's possible a mini gravitational black hole might form. Be ready for it. In addition, it's possible a neutrino might be formed before the black hole stage, the neutrino being a substance with a very high gravitational modality with very low 'em' modalities.)
(An alternative to the above would be to shoot 3 high powered lasers, or a single high powered laser split into 3 beams, each adjustable to achieve the above set up, all focused upon a single point in space.)
'If' effects are noted, 'then' further research could be done.
'If' effects are not noted, 'then' my latest TOE idea is wrong. But still, we would know what 'gravity' was not, which is still something in the scientific world. Science still wins either way and moves forward.

I think that one of the problems with modern education is anthropomorphization. Plants don't "use" things, and by talking about higher-order systems "using" lower order systems you miss some fundamental relationships regarding reality. A hurricane does not "use" water vapor to produce rain, and if you think in this kind of metaphor you'll never really understand what a hurricane is. But what are ya gonna do?
Everything we experience in this world is of nature. and quantum mechanics is of nature. So If the nature doesn't use quantum mechanical principles in its exsistence, That would be a real surprise.

There are two electrons in the outermost shell of magnesium. Pat (name ?) said that there is only one electron in the outermost shell. Didn't he? I have read that there can be up to 300 chlorophyll molecules in a single antenna out of many identical antennae on the thylakoid membrane. What puzzles me is what the RXN molecule does about all the excitons/electrons being pulled/pushed out of the magnesium atom if up to 300 of them are operating at once. Does it just select the first one and all the others have to slink back to their magnesium atom awaiting the next stream of photons? Fascinating video anyway!
I think it's weird to talk about this or that working because of quantum physics. Everything works because of quantum physics. Objects are solid because of quantum physics. The forces that bond atoms and molecules together are built on quantum physics. Everything is quantum.

Why oh WHY do we call this everywhere-being just probability? Would it be too intimidating to say that a particle does not fully exists (the lower the so-called probability gets, the less it exists in a particular position). We consider them existing in the place where it exists the most but anything smaller than an atom simply does not fully exist anywhere in our time/space/energy/matter world. It’s not that we can’t tell where it is or it’s jumping around or resides in two places at the same time. It’s that it has, like a complex number, an imaginary part (a part in a next dimension) which part is out of time and space. Moreover, a particle necessarily only exists fully in that higher dimension, and we can only perceive it’s blurry (nowhere fully existing) 3D projection. Where quantum computing happens, we (or the plant, or the bird) actually COMMUNICATE with a higher dimension (we simply call this random event not to be too scared from it). Random makes the world go around, the world go around...

Obviously is biology just biochemistry, which is a part of chemistry, which is pretty much the embodiment of what a quantum processes are, so yes.
The problem. with "Quantum biology" is that's a quack science and some people just postulate quantum processes to be in place where none (except classical processes) are required. Same as with telepathy and similar nonsensical bullshit in the 70s, when suddenly lots of "scientists" (=psychologists) seemed to discover evidence in favor of it everywhere.
Same here, as well as with postulated quantum processes in neurons. Just a lot of pseudo-science. At least until there is hard evidence in favor of the hypothesis.
If there really is a quantum process at work in biology, it's in the Mn4Ca-cluster in photosynthesis, because that's something where there is no classical explanation how it exactly works and be would at least make some sort of sense.

Though he does have an obvious bias so take the claims with a pinch of salt. Quantum biology is incredibly recent, almost the entire field is not well understood or empirically proven, and Quantum physics is notorious for having unintuitive nuance to it.
