@@HomesteadinHawaii I learn to surf up around there when I was a kid. I grew up in Julian and we'd come down through Escondido. There was this old dirt road we'd take from the 15 to Del Mar. It's now the 56 freeway. Been in P.B. for decades now. San Diego is wonderful, but it's become too crowded
Thats why I left in '03. I remember this one swell where I drive around all day looking for a spot that had a few empty waves but everywhere was packed. So instead I moved to hilo where all we have is one surf spot left.
Using this method of mixing then using a compressed air system has been marginally successful. Salt crystals build up causing clogs in the system and in the bamboo. We mix it in hot water then mix with a paint paddle on a drill. It stays in suspension for a while then settles out. It also takes far longer than a couple of hours. Suggestions?
Thought to ask a couple questions for my bamboo outdoor wall idea, with the intended purpose of a privacy screen and/or an unsealed-airy shed wall. No structural strength needed, as I'm currently planning. >> 1- Do you think skipping the full tank soak, and instead just leaving the bottom of fresh bamboo sitting in a 5-gal bucket of solution-- would be moderately successful to deter the bugs? 2- Do you think building the walls immediately would be problematic, given the outdoor purpose I stated? Appreciate any advice!
Greetings from Philippines. Can the bucket method work if we cut lengths prior to soaking or do we actually need to place entire pole in the bucket? Also how long does bucket method take in comparison to breaking the nodes and filling the length with borax solution?
Hello, thank you for all your great videos ! I did the treatment with a tank for cold immersion, but I had a problem. When I put in the 2 products (borax and boric acid - which was in powder form), it formed a sort of plate with a rather hard bottom. I spent over an hour grinding it into small balls and powder. But even so, after 2-3 days, I don't have the impression that it's really diluting in the water, even if I stir it as soon as it comes to a standstill, it's sinking back to the bottom (maybe it's happening little by little, but I can't see any change with my eyes? I made the mistake of putting the products directly into the tank water and not mixing them beforehand - could that be the cause? I also had river water, so it's cold, could that affect dilution? The first time it never goes as planned :) Thanks for your advice/experience/feedback! Léo
Hello, I have never had that problem, the last time I added straight into the tank without premixing. You can try pre mixing, add a little at a time and stir, it eventually should dissolve for you. Can try using small bucket of heated water to dissolve.
I recently picked up 8 foot lengths of 4 to 6 inch diameter at the yard waste facility. The pieces look green but I don't know how long ago they were cut before dumping. Should I still co with b oil tax method? Thanks. I just found your videos. They're really on point!
Will flame curing also kill the insects that present in the bamboo? I understand flame curing is a method to extend the longevity of the bamboo for outside exposure.
Hello Sir I'm so interested about Bamboo preservation I am an Asian particularly from Phillipines and we have a lot of Bamboo tress in our place so i want to learn more how to Preservd the Bamboo .
would it work to let the bamboo sit in the bucket of water. I have a 40ft long piece that I would like to keep whole but probably wouldn't be able to get a whole poked all the way through to pour it from the top
It's the combo of the 2 that makes it work, there all alternatives, some don't work as well, others are more toxic. You can check out my video 8 different ways to treat bamboo
@HomesteadinHawaii thank you, I've only managed to get borax and can't find boric acid in any shops in my area. Will keep looking though, I've got lots of bamboo to use and excited about giving thus method a go first. Thanks again 😀
Aloha Sean, hey do you have any first hand experience with how heat curing bamboo compares to this method with the borax and boric acid for longevity as a building material?
Heat treatment works just as well as using borax. You do have to pierce the inner nodes so they don't blow out from the excessive heat and cause cracking. You also have to be careful with not burning it, but it can be a great way to cure AND straighten the poles at the same time.
@@Malini108 I use a propane tank and torch. I don't pierce the inner nodes but it's a learning curve to keep it from cracking. It's also good to rub the natural oils back into the bamboo (or "bamboom" as my daughter calls it) with a rag.
You can treat in saltwater for items like that. Not as reliable but it still works. Just dunk your bamboo in saltwater for 2 weeks or so, but drill 2 small holes in each node from the outside to be sure the saltwater gets in
So double checking my math… if I have a 600 gallon tank, 90% will be water (540 gallons) and 10% will be my Borax/boric acid mix (60 gallons)… Is this correct? Seems like A LOT of borax/boric acid

Sometimes it does take a while to dissolve. Maybe try mix it up a day before and treat the next day, giving it more time to dissolve?
Hey does just soaking it in a bucket like that treat it as good as if you soak the whole thing I'm trying to do l12 foot length of bamboo
Vsd would be better, with the bucket method you are trusting the bamboo sucks up the solution, with vsd you ensure it

I hear copper sulphate works better than borax when using the bucket method. Green bamboo will shrink
@@HomesteadinHawaii Forgot to thank you. Thank you!!
can you substitute muriatic acid? I have that on hand, so I'm just hoping it might work.
It might but it's highly toxic, borax and boric acid are a much less toxic option

Thanks so much. Iʻm trying to get better all the time
Hey just a quick question.
Looking the make planter boxes
And wondering if the borax will effect the plants long term?
Any thoughts
They should be ok. Most wood is treated with way knarlier stuff and they make raised beds out of them

Vsd is 3-4 days If memory serves me correctly.
Try cutting them and see what happens.

Is this Borax and Boric Acid mixture good for outdoor use of Bamboo?

Once treated with this , will the bamboo hold up under ground? Like a main corner post? Thanks
all buildings need a good hat and good boots. Make sure the bamboo is set up on some sort of foundation. Touching the ground , it will rot quickly
