The late author of "Confessions of a Flash Artist" always said Mann was one of his biggest earliest influences.

I thought that the argument was spurred by Mann's denigration of Schoenberg's 12 tone scale in his novel "Dr Faustus". To make it worse Mann's fictional composer, Adrian Leverkuhn, deliberately contracted syphilis and sold his soul to the devil for uncanny musical talent. Are you referring to Alma Mahler (can't remember her new married name)? She was a trouble maker!
