To be honest, I would buy a creepy house just for the sh-s and giggles and not JUST because they most likely put it at a cheap price or because of how nice it looks despite the history. I love that kind of stuff and I wouldnt be too worried. As long as I do some research on it .

I had watched Gab's playthrough of this when she did it so may have gone a bit overboard with the jumpscare list. I was expecting most of them (except Robin's edited ones) so I may have misclassified them a bit. why is this game genuinely scarier than other horror games
It’s the natural, calm conventions of the setting with the slight undercutting of subtle horror related features, it gives the player a sense that something isn’t going how it’s meant to be going as it sets it up to be calm and then abruptly turns it on its head, which when done right is very good at unsettling the player. If this is your kind of thing I’d strongly recommend doki doki literature club if you don’t mind 2 hours of reading dialogue in an anime game
well, probably because it's more centered in reality. stories about kidnappers and murderers and house intruders are a lot more frightening than stories about monsters because they're things that can actually happen. you're more likely to get kidnapped or robbed than to be hunted by bigfoot. so it's easier to put yourself in that situation. plus, it's much more subtle. horror that unsettles you is much more effective than horror that startles you.
fear from a jumpscare will be gone as soon as it came most of the time, but the feeling of _something_ being wrong, but not being sure of what, is more likely to stick with you even after you've stopped playing the game. I feel like a lot of times horror stories hold your hand too much, and don't allow your paranoia and anxiety enough wiggle room. like in horror movies where it feels like the director is standing over your shoulder, throwing jump scares and loud violins at you like "are you scared? is this scary yet?" and that's part of why they simply aren't scary.

Jack, just imagine you’re sitting all comfy cozy in your house, your safe space, your personal bubble. You play this game for a video, looking for spooks and scares. However, while looking for more spooky games you stumble upon a game just like this one, but the house and address on the cover is yours. You click on it, heart beating with fear. As you navigate your character through the downstairs area that you recognize so well. You hear footsteps in your actual downstairs. Thinking it’s part of the game, you move the character up the stairs towards the room you are currently in. The footsteps move up the stairs in sync. Suddenly the game starts moving on its own, closer and closer to your door in the game, while the footsteps get closer and closer in real life... (edit lol thanks for all the likes😁💚)

Heres a rule of house design a lot of people dont know apparently: every room should come off a hall, aka you should NEVER have to go theough a designated room to enter another (ie. Go through the bathroom to get to a balcony, go through the living room to get to the kitchen) there should always be extra space to use as a hall through any thoroughfare of a house like you kitchen counter stops so you can get to the dining room the extra space is considered a hall, a hall dosen't have tp be marked with walls or anything just a clear shot preventing you from having to go around or interact with a room to get to another.
