It sure is hot one today huh
I read that in Beetlejuice’s voice.

Dukat is a prime example of the fact that the most interesting, frightening, and deadly villains see themselves as heroes.
This part
Ricardo Montalban actually said something like that about Khan, in one television interview.
"A villain, you see," he said. "Doesn't know that he is a villain..."
That episode where he strands him and sisko on a planet and mologues to him desperate for sisko to acknowledge his justifications for warcrimes. Great episode and alimo and Brooks are phenomenal in it.
And there isn’t even a statue of him on Bajor is there?
When I create a villain, that's my favorite way to create one. Almost nobody sees themselves as evil, or even the bad guy. Everyone is the hero of their own story, even if it's merely from their perspective. Hitler saw himself as a savior to Germany, Stalin saw himself as bringing strength and patriotism back to Russia, David Duke sees himself as being a defender of the new delusional underdog - white people, etc.
Marvel Comics have their version, their foil to their Dukat (Hitler), who is in many ways just like him... Magneto. However, his mass-murder keeps getting forgiven in that universe for some reason during his redemption arcs.
Oh, and need I mention dark hero (dark comedy?) protagonist Dexter? I mean, he's the definition of evil vs. evil... who sees himself as a hero of a faux modesty sort not realizing/caring that his father figure engineered him to be a vigilante living weapon as his final strike against evil, believing himself to be more than a mere final solution weapon of a vigilante.
There are also people who are willing to kill and die for narratives they believe in, especially against those who threaten the "truths" they believe in... but those people are just as much victims of liars as the people that they kill.
Dukat is very likely my favorite Star Trek villain. Business always picked up when he was a focal point of an episode, a true testament to his writing and Alaimo's ability to act. I just loved the whole alliance between Cardassia and the Dominion and how Dukat played off of Jeffrey Combs especially in their military level encounters with the federation.
If you have a villainous character, that you are able to understand and that is also played by an actor, which you admire for acting and hate for the character itself - it's just perfect. Thank you, Marc Alaimo.
The thing I appreciate so much with the writing of Dukat is that whether his actions be good or bad, the most important thing is his ego and intense desire to have people admire, love, or praise him. Once he fully breaks mentally with the death of Ziyal and the loss of his status on Cardassia, his desire for love turns to merciless anger and rejection. It feels organic and understandable. We don’t have many villains in media , much less Trek, with that depth and nuance nowadays
And Marc Alaimo plays him to perfection.
@@mary-kittybonkers2374 Marc Alaimo isn't playing a character according to the ppl that worked with him on ds9.
Compellng, yes.
Asshole, yes.
Dude is the only villain I would put over Khan. Interestingly enough they both play their characters with a type of charm despite being deranged villains. I always any episode with Dukat was going to be a great episode.
The character is an excellent depiction of a Fascist leader, really. Charm, egotism, desire for control, and a bizarrely sideways take on reality (like how he claims he was 'good' for Bajor, and maybe he *was* better than some of the other Prefects, but his rule was still horrific.)
One of the best villains in any medium. Outside of Trek, it's criminal how little praise he gets.
I rank Dukat as the best Star Trek villain. He was evil, but not evil just to be evil. He had his reasons, he had his motivations and experiences. He probably was one of the most realistic characters on the show.
I agree but a part of me says that is because they gave him so much time and interaction with the main characters or even side ones. Now a days the villains don't get much screen time and is so 1 dimensional.
@@funfact8660He had like 4 minutes of screen time.
Marc Alaimo just nailed it. Period.
It's honestly amazing how high of a percentage of the cast you could accurately say that about.
A phrase I saw used recently was "a gallon of Cardassian swagger."
Fits him and Damar pretty perfectly.
Yes, but how much of that gallon consists of Cardassian kanar?
@@jasonjimerson7046none, Damar drank it all
The part about Waltz made me recall a gaff on the DS9 documentary What We Left Behind where Nana and Ira were discussing the possibility of having had Kira have a romance with a Cardassian. Nana meant to say "anyone except Dukat." But she accidentally said "anyone except Marc Alaimo."
Maybe it wasn't a mistake. Marc Alaimo played another Cardassian in TNG so maybe she was saying she didn't want Kira together with Dukat or Macet.
@josephbrown6906 yeah it was. Go watch the documentary
It would be one hell of a character change. She pretty quickly learned to not just universally hate Cardassians but an actual romance arc is an interesting idea and I would like to see how they would have done it.
I'm sure there's lots of fan-fic shipping of dukat and kira together.
@@Blasted2Oblivion Probably not very well. The Dukat character is brilliantly written and acted, but ST writers have a long and disappointing history with the dynamics of adult relationships. Makes me wonder if excessively "hands-on" execs weren't interfering and focused on keeping it a kiddy-rated franchise.
It's funny with Dukat because you know he's a villain from the beginning. You know what he's capable of and what he's done. But you still can't help but love him and you're still shocked when he betrays you. Loved it. The Cardassians were why I loved DS9 so much.
Exactly! Very good way to describe dukat. Hes so untrustworthy and manupulates circles around everyone, like garak..ibtend to forgive them both horrible things because of how damn charming they are.
Garak at least redeems himself but dukat never does and i like how there could have easily been a turn for dukat toward goodness and redemption but nope, he goes the other way.
DS9 did very well with their Cardassian characters. Gul Dukat, Damar, and (my favorite) Garak were all great and well developed.
I really want to know what happened to Gilora Rejal, the Cardassian researcher who hits on O'Brien.
I heard she ran a competing space station for a year...
Ive always been a Garak man but watching this and Dukat/Alimos hand waving theatrical posturing style reminded me how great he was too.
DS9 is my favorite of the Trek series. I loved all the characters (even the baddies) because they were so well written. Recurring characters like Dukat , Damar and Weyoun had fascinating story arcs. When you put that much effort into the character detail like that the overall story arc is so much better.
DS9 had the best recurring characters!
It's mine as well.
@funfact8660 that is a fun fact
One of the best Star Trek characters, ever. Played so well by Marc Alaimo.
Holy F, seven hours??? This adds a whole new level of respect for actors like him, Robinson and Shimerman
There's this hilarious anecdote about Colm Meaney and Michael Dorn from the filming of "Apocalypse Rising."
Hopefully that should be enough to go on for a Google search--I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the interview.
@@GSBarlev found it! Yes, that is funny. But the idea to do a klingon-based show is even better!
Dukat and Wyn are two of my favorite Villains. The actors that played them did an amazing job.
Agreed
For some reason Wynn never really clicked for me, can't quite put my finger on why. Think of all the recurring characters she was the one I found most annoying, and not in a good way. I get that the whole thing with her was "Does she really believe her own bullshit or not?" but she always came across as a bit too insincere. Like every episode with her consisted of her going "I'm going to get in your way, because the prophets will it." *characters best her* "I'm going to back down because the prophets will it." maybe if she'd stuck to her guns a bit more? Dunno.
"Cardassia will be made whole. All that we have lost will be ours again. And anyone who stands in our way will be destroyed. This I vow with my life's blood: for my son, for all our sons." -- Dukat
DS9 allowed the periphery characters to grow and develop. Damar went from Dukat's henchman, to a puppet dictator under the Dominion, to a martyred war hero.
Weyoun always reminded me of "Mr Scratch" (aka minion of the Devil) from 'The Devil and Daniel Webster'. Slimy backstabber with a silver-forked tongue.
Nog was annoying brat who grew up and became a very popular character that did something that even Wesley Crusher couldn't do....graduate Starfleet Academy.
Garak, nuff said 😉
Martok went from Gowron's henchman to Chancellor, and adopting Worf into his House.
And who didn't cheer for Rom at the end of the series after all of the crap he suffered through?
Lastly, even Morn got his chances to shine, without ever having to say a word.
DS9 writers did an amazing job . It kept me guessing the entire run. It is absolutely my favorite character and also my favorite series.
Ducat's arc throughout DS9's run is one of the most complicated, varied and nuanced that I've ever seen. The actor AND the writers created this masterpiece of a character. Marc and Andy (Robinson, AKA Garak) brought the entire Cardassian race to life, fleshing out two very different characters whose roots were in the same society. I fully enjoyed them both.
Spent most of my childhood thinking his first name was Gul lol
50 buttons you didn’t notice on panels in Star Trek
I loved Dukat, i would rank him a lot higher as my fav vilain, as he had a lot of "screen presence"
It would have been cool to have seen Richard Moll as a Cardassian
Joining Brent Spiner's Data and John Larroquette's Maltz
Dukat is my favorite villain in fiction. Full stop. He is SO evil and yet so human (so to speak). Someone like Voldemort, that's not scary. Pure evil for the sake of evil doesn't exist. But a villain as nuanced as Dukat is truly terrifying. That is a person who really could exist. That is a person who has existed, just read a history book. That's what real evil looks like. Someone who, if you had no prior knowledge, would love to have a drink with. Someone who could slaughter millions and rationalize it to the point where he thinks he deserves a statue.
Just masterfully done, all around.
One of the best Star Trek villains, no question.
I completely agree
No one else could have played Gul Dukat. Brilliant performance.
I am extremely intrigued by the idea of Richard Moll as Dukat
Me too.🤔
You say that theatre actors, such as him, fitted the character better. I agree, but I'd add that the best actors in all of the various series (at least the first four - I got a bit lost after Voyager and I am trying to catch up) are the particularly theatrical ones. It's what makes ST work particularly well. They can sell the technobabble like no "straight to film/tv" actors can, their abilities to be near chameleon-like regarding their characterisations when necessary... I just think they pull it off better. It's only my opinion, of course, and it's not 100% across the board, but imagining for instance (and by far and away not a complete list!) Spock, Picard, Sisko, Dukat, Garek, even Bashir going through extreme changes comes more naturally to me than, say, some of the film star "one offs".
Kind of wondering more about how precisely his skull ended up in General Picard's house.
I was wondering how and why Picard had the skulls of so many sentient species displayed on a desk too. It’s the kind of thing that a ‘Super Villain’ would do…and I know that Picard isn’t, he’s the epitome of honour, morality and respect for others🤷🏻♀️.
Dukat is by far my favorite villain in Trek, and when matched Winn Adami made for a wonderful narrative arc. Such a great, timeless, forever character that we love (to hate!).
Gul Dukat is easily the greatest villain in all of Star Trek, Yes even better than Khan.
I agree. Marc Alaimo was the best.
That episode Waltz is a personal favorite of mine, really shows how good an actor he is and suggests that Dukat suffers from schizophrenia which would explain a lot.
This is why the Star Trek and the Next Generation actors are so good is because of their theater actors.
My all time favorite Star Trek villain by far!
The big issue with not giving Dukat a first name is that we kept on wanting to refer to him as "Gul" even when he advanced in rank. Conversely, it does make a whole whack of sense given the backstory since he'd probably shoot any Bajoran that ever used his first name.
It's also interesting that in TNG the closest characters that came to recurring villains that weren't omnipotent tricksters or faceless cybernetic hiveminds (Lore, Sela, Duras and his sisters) were pretty flat and cartoonish. In fact, I'd argue that the best-developed recurring "villain" (more anti-villain really) was probably... Admiral Nechayev?
Not really about Dukat, but Alaimo...
Marc Alaimo was one of the notable/semi-notable Star Trek actors to have a part in the 1990 movie _Total Recall._
Along with Alaimo, Lycia Naff (Sonya Gomez), Ronny Cox (Captain Jellico), Roy Brocksmith (most memorably the Zakdorn strategama master), and the voice of Robert Picardo (The Doctor), and I wouldn't be surprised there are others I missed...all were in _Total Recall._
DS9 was the best for character development overall. The stationary setting meant all extraneous plot had to come to them. Everything else was day to day life and the relationships of the people who lived there.
The greatest Villanova in the Star Trek universe. He had the power and the incredible ego!!
Can't see bailiff Bull as a Gul🤷🏼♂️🤓😎✌🏻
Dukat is handsdown the most complex and best written character in all of Trek.
You even find yourself being manipulated by his lies and start to believe him for a second. Incredible writing
His legate rank was referenced is Ds9 "Gul, I'm suprised you haven't promoted yourself back to legate"
Here is an odd question... how is the Cardassian Empire an empire if it isn't ruled over by an emperor?
Not all Empires were.
The British Empire existed long before Victoria was given the title of "Empress". The Dutch had an empire, even when they were a republic. There were references to the "American Empire" in the wake of the Spanish-American War. An empire is a system of governance over often subjugated peoples, not simply because the ruling government has someone with the tile of emperor.
Don't think they were ever called the Cardassian Empire, i think they were referred to as the Cardassian Union
@@nathancassidy6377
Oooh, Nerd Moment!
They became the Cardassian Union after the Civilian Government overthrew the Military.
There you go, Jason. Umpteen people jumped in here to "um, actually" you and they all suck.
Except me, because I did it first.
Dukat is probably my favorite antagonist in all of Star Trek.
I will admit the whole “going bonkers and becoming a mustache twirling evil Bajoran emissary” was not my favorite arc.
Despite that, Dukat is still top notch.
An amazing and absolutely beautiful video. Very well done and presentation was engrossing informative and awesome
The best (and even funniest!) Star Trek villian of all, yes, including Khan! I wish the writers had not changed his character so negatively at the end and had left him as he’d ever been. It’s too sad that they felt they had to ruin him.
I kind of think that Dukat could have been redeemed for his role in the occupation of Bajor. The writing could have easily covered that he was essentially following orders. It's also obvious he loved his daughter, and while I think it's easy to assume he was always telling her what he thought she wanted to hear, I do sometimes think he regrets his past. But what we got was even better. I get why they went the way they did.
One fact Trekkies might not know about Gul Dukat--his name was stolen from the Babylon 5 series Bible, specifically from Dukhat, the leader of the Minbari whose death caused the Earth-Minbari War
Next thing you'll be telling me Nagus was a term used for the emperor of Ethiopia.
DS9 was released before Babylon 5.
@@claudecolclasure2239 LOL, and JMS gave the B5 series Bible to Paramount years before DS9 came out, not to mention that both shows were in pre production at the same time.
Solid video.
DS9 is super underrated.
I think the fact that Dukat was so well liked despite his actions just proves how good he was written
I always felt SG stood for Supreme Gul or something similar. Fitted in with his ego and his liking for the rank Gul over other cardassian ranks
Dukat is a perfect example of the "horrible person, great writing" type of villain character
For me, personally, Dukat is the best Star Trek villain. I find the Borg Queen too singular, and while I love Q he isn't straight up evil. Gul Dukat mixes evil and justifying that evil with suave charm and social charisma. His grand ego and lofty ambitions as well as his utilitarianism simply enables him to be ruthless when he needs to be. His care for his family, his apparently genuine wish to preserve peace in the colonies when the Maquis rising breaks out is balanced by his lack of regret for the occupation of Bajor and the millions of deaths it lead to. He always tries to justify it. Gul Dukat never really take responsibility for his own actions, there is always somebody else to blame. He likes to claim the occupation would be worse without him. You do not find Gul Dukat's depth in the Borg Queen or Q or Khaan or any other Star Trek villain. Probably because Gul Dukat was the primary villain for an entire seven seasons.
"You do not find Gul Dukat's depth in the Borg Queen or Q or Khaan or any other Star Trek villain. Probably because Gul Dukat was the primary villain for an entire seven seasons."
I suggest that's because his character was brilliantly written and acted. Alaimo nailed the role --- I wanted to see him as a regular on the series because Dukat was such a DELICIOUS bad guy with incredible sex appeal! (somebody's gotta say it)
I think his name is mentioned in "a stitch in time" as well
Gul Dukat.... the villan I love to hate, and hate to love...
There's something so distrurbingly attractive to this character, ofc due to the credit of M. Ailmo excellent portraial. .
Love the work! But I'd love to see a video on all the times conventional weapons such as Chemical based Firearms are said to he obsolete, followed by all the times Phasers are neutralized by a damping feild like the attack on the Gate with the Jemihidare in DS9, or being boarderd by our distant dinosaur cousins in Voyager.
He was a great villain, wouldn't want to share a table with him though... :P
The character on paper was a risk IMO, not for concept, but his dialogue. His speaks with a theatricality, wearing a mask, and a lesser performer could've easily fallen into pantomime, but Alaimo made that character integral to DS9 as any of the regular cast with masterful turns in many episodes.
Speaking of Dukat: y'all should make a list of top ten characters we wouldn't want to piss off...
Garak? 😊
I always thought Casey Biggs never got enough credit for his role as Damar.
Makes sense to keep the title of Gul. Just look at a real life example, President Gaddafi of Libya still maintained the rank of Colonel, I guess in a way to keep in touch with the people.
I subscribe to the notion that Dukat's first name is Skrain, Beta-Canon or not. The same goes for Emporer Palpatine's first name from Star Wars being Sheev. Sheev Palpatine.
One of the best hated yet loved characters
Dukat is the perfect villain . Egotistical , no remores , believes him self right and gift of fab
Dukat was a wonderful villain and the writers never needed to ask him to come back to guest star because the character was so vital to the overall plot. There was no one else that could do it but Mark Alaimo... but Mark kept complaining that "wah wah, no one ever thanks me and tells me good job." And the writers just groan and roll their eyes.
Alaimo was a novice to television and had no clue how good he was. With one episode he took over and owned the role of Dukat -- I would have killed to see him in a starring role on a Trek series about the Cardassians! (those Milwaukee guys are HOT!)
Our favourite intergalactic enligtened space despot .
Fascinating
Supposedly Elim is Garak's first name...but is it really Doctor?
It must be kind of ironic that two of Bashir's best friends are both named Mile
Mile > Elim
@@Renegade2786 Mila - Elim. Pretty similar too.
The only singular Star Trek villain that ever topped Khan Noonien Singh, IMHO.
Dukat is such an amazing character and topic of discussion due to his complexity. In regards to his crimes as Prefect of Bajor I would argue that his detractors unfairly place the sins of the Cardassian government on Dukat's shoulders. Dukat was an ambitious, arrogant prick to be sure, but he also makes it clear several times over that he did not relish the more unsavory aspects of his job, and even went out of his way to accommodate his wards wherever he could. But of course such accommodation was perceived as weakness by the Resistance, so really he was in an impossible situation. I don't think he was evil so much as he was egotistical, and under similar circumstances a lot of people are not far off.
Dukat lost a poker game to Worf's poker antagonist Data.
Always thought that Dukat was one of the BEST villains in ALL of Star Trek. Just a pity that the whole "pah-wraith story line" felt like the writers just needed something "patched" to the story to bring a few too many arcs to a close due to the show being scheduled for cancellation and not something WELL thought out like the Dominion war which would have had several moments where Dukat's ending could have taken place.
Agreed. Was never a fan of "crazy" Dukat. They should have had Dukat in the Dumar role turning to a revolution against the dominion.
When Damar took over from Dukat as the leader of the cardassian union, he took the legate title.
What do you call a cardasian that runs around in circles?
Cal Dusac.
He was such a good villian.
Little known fact - Dukat disguised himself as a human from Louisiana and used the Orb of Time to go back to 19th century earth to try and have sex with as many of Sisko's ancestors as he could. Unfortunately, he ended up in San Francisco where he was cleaned out by Data in a poker game and unable to make it to Louisiana before the orb brought him back
He's Trek's greatest villain, and it's not even close.
Gul Dukat is up there with Q...GOAT
I didn’t know any of these things. Any of these things!!!!!!

He's #1 in my book.
Behr is a POS for changing Dukat's character starting in season 5.
I honestly love and hate Dukat in equal measure. He is fascinating, well developed and not just evil.fpr evils sake.
I could imagine Charles Dance playing him.....or his father
I'm pretty sure he was called Leget Dukat at one point in the show.
Nope sorry
Marc Alaimo was the ZandoZan(? spelling) in The Last Starfighter...
Except, that the Dominion did a crappy job studying the BoP, since the Breen Weapons were ineffective....
Did you hear Marc Alaimo's voice lately? He sounds like a mob boss.😆

I think back in the day Dukat was also considered a sex symbol as well (due to his popularity), wasn't he?
He was a legend in his own mind.
