    Windows are a defining feature of a Mid-Century modern house. Kevin travels to a glass factory in Wisconsin to see how plate glass is manufactured and to Minnesota to see our windows come together. Back at the house, a massive window goes in above the sliding balcony doors. Our project has taken us into the cold New England winter. But there’s still much work to be done including exterior painting. Kevin finds Mauro deciding what to do on a 30-degree day. The driveway runs downhill into the garage. A drain at the bottom handles rain but what about snow? Richard helps Kevin Bilo install a radiant heating system that will make short work of removing snow. The patio installation is an integral part of our project’s drainage system. Kevin finds Jenn and Roger installing permeable pavers.

Trucking/railing raw materials in for the amount of glass that’s produced would be hard to compete with glass produced around the world. Also there recycling system could be updated as it’s not usually disposed of by hand at the end anymore. 👍🏻😊

    • @robgeach8105
      @robgeach8105 4 года назад +13

      they're all fixed windows. they can guarantee 100% seal on all sides even if you try to pressure wash the weakest joint you can find. leaving the bottom open without a reason to leave it open just breaks your air gap for no benefit. assuming water will be stuck between sill pan and flange forever and you'll have to deal with a callback is motivated thinking, but not universally true.

    • @EvanEdstrom
      @EvanEdstrom 4 года назад +11

      Indeed! Current best practice would be to leave the bottom without counter-flashing to allow any moisture that gets in to not dam up in the sill. With these huge overhangs likely won't ever see water.
      Biggest issue to me was not showing the rolling of the zip tape. That's critical for it to work properly.

      Also, I have attended install clinics and seminars at Pella, Anderson, Jeld-Wen, Marvin, and other window mfgs. where they demonstrated the difference of flashing a operating and non-operating window. Both were flashed very differently.
      Fixed windows have no moving parts where moisture can penetrate nor movement - other than with the house’s natural settling and moving, so there is less than 1% chance of water infiltration behind a non-operating window.
