    Fun fact - when I was 10, me and my dad were at this race, and we stayed through to the very end. We had no idea what was going on until we got back to the hotel afterwards and found out online. Younger me was a Ferrari fangirl, so she didn't mind it too much :P Also holy crap there was so many beer cans thrown on track. If you watch carefully, one of the Ferraris actually hit one halfway into the race.

      IMS had started their own box lunch program (Sandwich, chicken, chips and cookie) for $8 more you could get 2 oil cans(32 oz. ea.) of Foster's Lager. So there were hundreds of thousands of these weighty beers, and dozens and dozens were thrown at the Ferraris from outside the catch fence. We were in turn 1 (Stand H) and it was as close to a riot as I've ever been near. We left after 10 laps. Haven't been to an F1 race since, but the first 5 were great fun!

      It didn’t rain a lot, but it drizzled constantly and the cars throwing up spray meant visibility was still be zero and would be unsafe. They should have brought out the services vehicles to clear the water much sooner than when they did, but 2005:looked like even more of a farce when there was anticipation of a proper race. When all the spectators and teams rooked up on race day at Spa and the race start postponed several times in the first hour, it should have been in the back of some people’s minds that the race wouldn’t happen properly.

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 4 года назад +199

      Agreed. Ferrari was punished for being too successful the previous year...then, when they're having a bad year, they are supposed to agree to be effectively punished again? I don't think so. The fault lies entirely with Michelin. Regardless of their lack of data, it's up to the company to supply a product that is fit for purpose - and if they aren't sure of the parameters, they should over-engineer them so they at least hold together.

      Indeed. There were new tire rules specifically designed to penalize Ferrari and Bridgestone, and when it turned out they still had the better tires at one race, they should give up the advantage in that race too? Maybe Michelin should have let their teams use Bridgestone tires for the race - that would have been an advertising coup for Bridgestone!

      @peter pan so fair that it was repealed the following year. So fair that it was announced when the cars for 2005 were almost ready so it was impossible to make up for this change. And besides, everyone knew for quite a long time that the Michelins were harder than the Bridgestones and would have had no problem to go the full distance. The FIA saw it and said “guess what, enough with ferrari winning, let’s also give the others a chance”.

    2005 one tyre set rule is ridiculous, and dangerous, as well as do more harm than good. I just hoped for a close title battle, like 2003, with McLaren having the fastest cars, even if it means Ferrari gonna win it anyway. Just gimme another '2003' season for 2005, and that's it.

Early that morning we got the indication that all was not right in Bernie's world. We then started hearing discussions about doing the formation lap. Take the grid, start the race then before completing the 1st lap, pull off into the pit lanes. We waited until it actually happened. We already had our gear packed up ready to go. What is also bizarre is that after San Marino 1994, FIA still doesn't have a protocol of imeddiately canceling a race if accidents are showing that might be something wrong with the racetrack or equipment. In San Marino they also put into vote many options to increase security on the corner where a pilot had already died, and Senna would die in the next day, and nothing was really done.

    One thing that's often overlooked these days is the power struggle that was going on between the FIA and the non-Ferrari manufacturers, who were always going on about forming a breakaway series. I wouldn't be surprised if that had an impact on the FIA being so against the idea of running a non-championship race or letting the teams run a race themselves. If they pulled it off, what was to stop them organising an entire championship on their own?
