Even with ALL the ridiculous jokes, this is one of the MOST accurate to the original lore adaptation in the modern era. Like, every time they reference something in the lore I'd point at the screen and smile like I RECOGNIZE THAT! Thank the animators and writers for making this movie. It's really good, for someone who grew up on the lore, this is very very good.
Although there is one (1) nitpick that bother me. Monkey is supposed to be the FIRST follower of the monk. So technically there shouldn't be Piggy and the water demon there. It should be the monk alone. However, I understand that is supposed to help the westerners draw the dots. So it's good.

I grew up not really caring for monkey king or journey to the west but ever since this movie came out ive invested into the lore and story for this long so far (i bought the book and a stick (more on that later) and chinese myths & legends collections 😭
at first i felt this was kinda cringe with the occasional jokes but every dumb five there's one that completely floors me (dang dynasty & jade emperor's roof most notably, but i love the fact JE troubles from monkey is a running gag), i did roll my eyes at the typical cocky character + betrayal plot and felt the family thing wasnt really earned, but the end did make me tear up so they did that right! i love that this adaptation completely isolates monkey, and the only consistent love he has in his life is stick of all things! stick is the best character for doing whatever he wants (so long monkey permits) and enabling monkey. it was really fast paced which really threw me on my first watch but after 100 times meh it actually slows down cause of the scenes i feel weren't the best they could've been. and i absolutely agree dragon king would've been so cool if he was portrayed and taken more seriously! its just downplayed by monkey regardless
none of that matters too much overall imo cause the 2D sequence erases every sin for this movie. the fact that stick's voice actor Nan Li from the band Voodoo Kung Fu made the theme song AND have one of theirs in there idk that's just awesome what more is to it?
anyways stick is such an especially unique take for a weapon and that he's an actual character. he has PRONOUNS and wants to do something non-violent (which is where he's most enthusiastic & hard-at-work. he carries monkey, monkey is nothing without him) he wants to play the guitar!!! he sings!!! he laughs at monkey's jokes and antics and its the sweetest thing!!! he hates dragon but grew to like lin!!! I love that
while i didn't know much, there was a Feeling I had about the demons being right out of the book and the way monkey is defeated. I JUST DIDN'T REALISE UNTIL I LOOKED IT UP THAT HE PISSES ON BUDDHA'S MIDDLE FINGER that was hilarious. so many parts caught me off guard while some did put me off too, and like you guys said overall its just really enjoyable!
the ending as well, i got excited even though i didn't Get their significance too much at the time, but it was so hype it really felt like they were setting up for a sequel or a series, which i would love as based on this adaptation considering how monkey basically killed half of the demons that were from the book in the montage!! also shout out to them making red boy into red girl, i called the twist instantly but that was still sick

Hi James and Nobu, I have watch you guys' show for a bit, but I just feel like I need to make some comment here.
In the original novel, the monkey king might be wild and unrestrained, but he is definitely not selfish: the initial reason why he kept fighting demons is because he is willing to protect his land and his monkey citizens. Also, the reason monkey king is trying to rebel the gods is because the gods consider his as a outlier and constantly trying to oppress him. But here they just altered his personality and changed him to a straight villain..

Journey to the West is one of the great Chinese traditional novels. It goes from Wukong as a rock to him being imprisoned to him as the monk's disciple. If you want a really good adaptation, the old CCTV show is amazing. You can see it free on the youtube channel (with subtitles). A couple of my favourite film re-imaginings of the story are Monkey King: Hero is Back (the one with subtitles, not the one that's been dubbed) and Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. The latter is by Stephen Chow.

The Monkey King isn't really sinister in the book, the other gods just do things that would set him off. He's also smart and resourceful, but he's way too straight forward that he's constantly misunderstood in the journey later.
It's like almost every single time the monk sends him home, it counts as one misfortune of their journey.

Journey to the West is one of my favorite novels, I've been reading that since I was 11.
I don't know if they provide full English translation of the original book though, as most of the translations only go through less than 40% of the original book because it's a very long book, so long that my mom was surprised that I could finish it.
The original motives for the Monkey King was that he felt that he wasn't respected by the gods, the gods first refer to him as an immortal with a "demon" attached to it, and further mocked him by making him work in the stables, the second time, he realized that he's in too much trouble after eating all the food and drinking all the wine and just decided to leave. He's not really "sinister", as the gods constantly put him into situations that would set him off, but he's willing to accept defeat and he even gained new alliance through the defeat with the Jade Emperor's nephew. The reason why he crashed the party the second time was because the gods gave him the title but no salaries, this shouldn't be a problem at first, but without the salaries, the Monkey King is basically banned from large social gatherings like birthday parties and other things, when he knew that he wasn't invited, he was furious and just decided to go and crash the party.
The Monkey King is the first follower of the monk, as stated in the original novel that he's the heart of the journey, and every single time that he's being removed from it, the group ends up in all kinds of trouble that made them realize they couldn't do it without him. The original novel have a lot more funny moments and it's really worth a read.

      @clairelin0216 9 месяцев назад

I also watched an exact adaptation of the original Journey to the West novel, sadly, there was no English subtitles that goes along with it.
Some parts of the novel are really funny, like how the Monkey king isn't able to hide his tail when he transformed into large objects and people, or the time when he decided that dragon pee is suitable to go into medicine and he's like "It's okay, he's not just a horse, this would work.", and there is also one time when he tricked Piggy into giving him the silver he hid in his ear.
I always preferred the series version that was exactly like the novel for this one.

The first demon in this actually could defeat Monkey King, his element is fire while the Monkey King is metal.
The important characters will later be different elements that either could defeat each other or have no effect on each other.
And the trick the Monkey King pulled on that demon is q quite classic trick he pulled throughout the book, as the metal weapon is almost 22kg and no one could just pick it up and wield it like he did, that's a reference to the book, although not exactly with the same demon as presented in this movie, and for what it was worth, he's the uncle of that demon since he made a brother pact with the demon's father.
The Monkey King's charms is in his pride though lol

I feel like this movie would have been better if it was a series.

They might be busy reacting to other animated movies from DreamWorks, Netflix, Sony, WB, etc. especially the former so it’s going to be a while till James and Nobu will react to some Disney and especially Pixar movies again on the channel, not to mention they rely on the Patreon to vote for the next movie.
Come to think of it it’s been a year a 4 months since their last reacted to a Pixar movie through _Wall•E_ and 11 months since they reacted to a Disney animated movie through _101 Dalmatians_
