Thanks! Just got back from pulling an EZ30 to throw in my impreza. Watched these two videos three times beforehand and it really helped. That lower bellhousing nut by the left axle was such a pain. Took over an hour. Axle pin was seized so I had to break it loose with a crescent wrench and then managed to fit a small ratchet on it. Could barely move it one click.
i just removed the axles and removed the bell housing bolts the service manual recommends it was super easy. I also removed the intake manifold which made the torque converter bolts a breeze to remove.
This guide is VERY VERY useful. Started tearing apart my 06 Tribeca today. Picking up a JDM longblock next week. 🤘🏾 Coming from a Honda background this is my first engine replacement in a Subaru.
I have never seen 0 dislike on you tube. You do not want to talk but you are a good person. ( found out when you start to gave some comments). I have done a lot 2.5 and never did 3.0l nothing new, for me however I would like your opinion.
Very helpful video! I wish I would have watched it before I attempted to pull an EZ30R engine from the PnP. I spent nearly 3 hours trying to get those lower bolts off the bellhousing. However I am prepared for next time! Thank you.
I’m getting a JDM delivered in a couple weeks and this video is extremely helpful for the swap! What parts of the engine did you attach the hoist to? It looks like you’ve got it bolted on at several points but it’s hard to tell. Forever grateful!
I'm in the middle of pulling my h6 motor right now to replace the transmission front seal at the torque converter, these 2 videos are so helpful for doing this job. A couple notes: remove the radiator/fans/coolant overflow as a single assembly, easier for removal and install. Also, I see everyone using the engine leveler and then struggling with the extra chain length. You want to get the hook on the end of the hoist as close to the top of the motor as you can. Look at the slack in the chain on either side of the hook as the hoist takes the weight of the motor, and adjust where you grab it from. Use a prybar to tilt the angle of the motor as you work it off the tranny. I watched another video where the dummy removed his hood to make clearance for the unnecessary leveler, and then had to lift it over the radiator. There's only so much lift for the hoist ram, make sure to take it into account.
I want to run some of the aftermarket parts for the EZ30R but don’t want to buy another motor, do you happen to know if the R series cylinder heads are compatible with the EZ30D motors?
Would you be kind enough to show the mounting point for the hoist you used on the front? I am assuming the AC compressor bolts are what you used? Did you use the same stock bolts that are used to hold the compressor or something different?
Hi, great help like all you videos. Would you happen to know why your oil filter and the bottom line of the filter are all cover it this residue. I have the same thing on mine and I’m not so sure what is causing it.
I've had that. That's actually due to a leaky sensor above on mine. Surprised my Subaru mechanic that it wasn't gushing like when the same one on ej25's go bad. It was leaking slowly but enough to do the same thing as you see on the video. A replacement sensor fixed the leak.

Hi, is it easier to pull the engine with the transmission attached? Or, just pull the engine as you are showing in the video? Need to repair/replace a leaking timing cover that is pouring out oil. Thanks in advance
@@MrSubaru1387 Me neither. I thought maybe you disconnect the front axles and rear drive sht and pull it out as one unit. Then you are not messing with the converter bolts. Have you ever seen repaired the timing covers on the H6? this 2006 H6 is leaking bad. From parts diagrams, it looks like it's actually a double cover/inner and outer cover. I have already stripped 2 of the outer timing cover bolts. No way I can R/R this in the car. Welcome any thoughts/advise oyu ahve on this. THanks, Jon
Hi, When you removed the two lower bell housing bolts in this video, were the axles removed? For the 2006 LL Bean Wagon I am pulling the engine on, the axles on both side are in the way of getting at the two 14mm nuts. Any suggestions? Thanks
Oops I messed up. Torque converter follow the motor out. Trying to put it back. Wondering if I messed up the seal. Can’t find any video about replacing the seal. Can you please help?
Hi Mr Subaru1387, I have a question that you might be able to help me with. I removed an H6 engine 2005 model from a Subaru Outback and replaced it with another H6 engine from a 2006 model Subaru Outback. The engine turned over but did not start yet it ran fine when I took it out of the donor car as did the original engine but it had a blown head gasket so needed to be repaired or replaced, I thought an engine swap would be simpler?.. I have tried changing the inlet manifold, I have tried installing the ECU and the BCU and the key chip from the donor car but went backwards because then it wouldn't even turn over and brought up an Error Code 43, I then reinstalled the original ECU and BCU and the Error Code 43 is still there and it won't even turn over. I am at a loss now as what else it can be. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Also please provide PayPal details so I can make a contribution to your work. Thanks
@@MrSubaru1387 Not since I changed the ECU. It did when I first installed the engine but didn't start it did not have spark. The engine that I removed still ran but had a blown head gasket maybe worse as air bubbles and coolant would bubble out of the radiator.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks I will see what I can find out about that. There is a crank position sensor do you think that would be worth changing? Might be easier to just do a head gasket, your video on that looks very good. From your experience do you think the cylinder heads will be ok on the engine with the blown head gasket? I do appreciate you taking the time to think about and answer my questions and I did make a contribution to you via PayPal
Changing the head gaskets on the H6 are much different than the HG on the H4. I'm not talking about the crank sensor, I'm talking about the reluctor wheel. The reluctor wheel is on the rear of the crank, under the flexplate. Sometimes Subaru changes the amount of "teeth" on the reluctor and this will cause a no start without spark.
What was your purpose of removal? What I mean is, is there a list of things one would do with an engine removed to extend the life of a 200k engine vs getting a "new" JDM with 50k ? ( I realize this is an older vid, and the question I ask is likely a subjective answer, sorry. :) )

You either have to force the engine to spin, or remove the engine with the flexplate and torque converter in place. You'll have to buy a new flexplate and torque converter though, still won't have room to unbolt it while attached to the back of the engine.

Usually to the a/c compressor bracket or to the 14mm bolts that secure the compressor or compressor bracket.
