Just love these guys! Unique vocals and a sweet jazzy groove, I still spin their tunes regularly, it's happy music, and Dan is a riot. Their "Where's the Money" live album is one of the tightest live performances I've ever heard. One great song after another.
I have been a fan of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks since my older brother turned me on to them in the early 70's. My brother's girlfriemd, who he stupid;y dumped, took me to a concert that she had paid for. I have been a devoted fan ever since.
Wow, nobody ever reacts to Dan Hicks! Like your pal there, my older sister had an album (Where's the Money?) so I've been hooked since about the age of 13. He virtually disappeared for nearly 20 years and then, in 1994, I opened the newspaper and saw that he was playing at a hotel in San Francisco with a new band he called the Acoustic Warriors. On my own I headed out and was so glad I did. I saw him perform with the AW several times at bars in SF the next three years, and another three times or so at larger venues in Seattle after that. He made a few albums with the AW including one with several guest vocalists (Bette Midler, Ricki Lee Jones, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Brian Setzer). He passed away a few years ago.
Dan was in the Charlatans too. most folk only know the Charlatans, if at all, from old psychedelic SF poster art, but one of Dan's Charlatans' band mates sits in here @ a Golden Gate revival party starting @55:45 ruclips.net/video/O_SmNXA4rP0/видео.html the rest of this band, pardon my tongue in cheek, is pretty good too thanks for the Acoustic Warriors tip ... I'm off to look for some of that
Same story with me. At thirteen, my sister had WHERE'S THE MONEY. I loved it and got STRIKIN' IT RICH when it was released. Over 50 years later I still listen to their entire catalog. I recommend I SCARE MYSELF for violin, the awesome "Symphony" Sid Page.
John Girton is the guitar player on this, one of my all time favourite songs/tunes,he sings it along with Maryann Price.I think they were a couple at that time and wrote this together.
Thanks for listening to Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks! They were incredibly talented and very creative. Always put on a great show. Try their song, I Scare Myself, for a great example of Sid Page’s violin work.
Dan Hicks never disappoints. As mentioned already, a favorite is 'I Scare Myself, the trio of violin solos are haunting. Live at San Francisco's Warfield Theater.
The album "Where's The Money?" is a live album from 1971 with great music and Dan Hicks' humor really comes through in the between-the-songs banter. Give it a listen (with or without reaction). I think you'll like it.
I forgot to add, I was 14 or 15 when I saw them with my brother's ex. They came out on stage at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium (lousy acoustics) with a tropical sunset backdrop and a few potted palm trees placed at the periphery, and then amazed the audience. They played mostly the songs from Last Train to Hicksville. I was a Beatles/Beach Boys/Kinks/Yardbyrds/Buffalo Springfield/Jimi Hendricks/Woodstock/Led Zeppelin, etc. baby, but I had a weekend jazz pianist mother who taught me to appreciate jazz in the back of my mind at the time. I instantly gravitated to Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. It was different but familiar as well.
Dan Hicks is more than what the industry has ever been prepared for. There's no box for him. And just listen! We don't get people who can play anymore.
Alway loved dan’s music hot licks acoustic warriors, licks again. Last time I got to see him at black rock casino, ask him why he didn’t have any a w songs in the set. Like hell I’d go? Well he checked out a few years later rip brother.
And talking about fun: Dan made a whole album "It happened one bite" for a movie that never happened. It's a great album, full of fun, and close touch of life..albeit through cartoon characters that never existed.
The Hot Licks were exactly that. Nothing comical about their stellar musicianship. The violinist should listen to Symphony Sid Page on “I Scare Myself.”
@4:00 I'm noticing this video would not have worked if not for the fortunate fact that 1 of these guys is a vertical head bobber & the other is a horizontal head bobber a shame they chose one of this band's least interesting #s the band had a lot of humor in their song catalog, in the lyrics, the stage presence & even in the music while voices are silent
check out the live videos of the original band on you tube ruclips.net/video/hBGeQ0zSifc/видео.html a Dan Hicks story that is characteristically ambiguous ... The band was getting very popular around SF in early mid-'70s. Bill Graham scheduled them to open for The Kinks doing an album tour the show filled Winterland, & a lot of locals were there to see the Hot Licks. They had a lot of material by then, played a great long set the crowd loved, & as the set got longer Dan started, whether he meant it or just his idea of humor, going on to the audience along the lines of wouldn't you rather we kept playing the rest of the night instead of The Kinks coming out He was really riding it as if he meant it ... trying to get the crowd to let Bill Graham know the crowd wanted the Hot Licks to keep playing. He had to know there was no way it would happen; but he put on a convincing act of "selling it". again, as I said, that was his idea of humor, an old USA tradition too subtle for the raised-by-a-TV generations ... walking the line as if it could be a put on or maybe he means it and can you tell?

Dan Hickks and his hot licks..very talented group of musicians
their stage presence was magic

Dan Hicks and Maryann Price blending vocals is pure magic.
best band ever
funniest band ever anyway ... especially live

Dan is an all time favorite
1969 Rolling Stone mag said. Dan Hicks was a cool wash rag over the face of rock and roll.
The friend who introduced me to Dan Hicks said they’re like The Andrew’s Sisters on acid.
The Hot Licks were exactly that. Nothing comical about their stellar musicianship.
The violinist should listen to Symphony Sid Page on “I Scare Myself.”
Guys will you start a trend. Dan Hicks "I Scare Myself" become addicted to Dan.
How many bands were there like this you asked? One
A great, but maybe uncharacteristic Hicks track from their last album (the only one where the lineup included a drummer).

a Dan Hicks story that is characteristically ambiguous ...
The band was getting very popular around SF in early mid-'70s.
Bill Graham scheduled them to open for The Kinks doing an album tour
the show filled Winterland, & a lot of locals were there to see the Hot Licks.
They had a lot of material by then, played a great long set the crowd loved, & as
the set got longer Dan started, whether he meant it or just his idea of humor,
going on to the audience along the lines of wouldn't you rather we
kept playing the rest of the night instead of The Kinks coming out
He was really riding it as if he meant it ... trying to get the crowd to let Bill
Graham know the crowd wanted the Hot Licks to keep playing. He had to know
there was no way it would happen; but he put on a convincing act of "selling it".
again, as I said, that was his idea of humor, an old USA tradition too subtle for
the raised-by-a-TV generations ... walking the line as if it could be a put on or
maybe he means it and can you tell?
