We (Geelong) were incredible that year. But you can start to see the wheels falling off a bit in this game. Still hurts to think we didn't win the cup. The best season by a team that didn't end up winning the flag

The doggies had a dam good side. Cats were so powerful back in that era.

A credit to the dogs for putting up a fight when lacking so many skills. It was an AFL team playing with the throttle halfway to the floor against a VFL-standard team giving it all they had. The better coach won.

@@GeneralSunsprite When the ball is coming in from a looooong kick, seasoned AFL-level players judge the flight of the ball better than VFL-level players; thus, the more skilled players outmaneuvre less a skilled. I merely opined that the dogs made up for their deficit through sheer effort during that period.
Currently, McCrae, Libba, Treloar, Bont and Daniel read the game with great accurately and move to positions where they are most likely to get a possession. West, Vandermeer, Garcia, McNeill, Scott and several others log few disposals in AFL but do well at VFL. Schache was a good example. He would shine in the VFL but was lost in AFL. Melbourne fancied itself able to help the poor fellow realize his potential, but found that assertiveness is not easily taught.
