6:43 I love how she savagely called out the blatant mysogony of the studio system here without sugar coating it. she even repeating the word 'own' with emphasis. i wonder what she would have thought about the last couple years and the downfall of Harvey Weinstein. I would have LOVED to hear her commentary on that event.
This was an amazing documentary on such an amazing person. I will never know why so many more have not been made Louise. Where ever you are Louise, you are missed!!! 🌹💝🙏😥
A wonderful chance to see and HEAR the charming, beautiful Louise. So modest, so intelligent, so outspoken..once seen -never forgotten. Thanks for posting ...
What a fascinating lady. I try to imagine all that she had seen & the people that she interacted with & I'm filled with wonder - all of that history - the 1920's was when things changed for so many people. Thanks for posting this. There's a new movie being made about Ms. Brooks, I hope it's done well.
magnificent. this documentary should be considered a national treasure. The insight alone in to an era of film making we'll never see again is reason enough. Combine this with the stunningly beautiful woman Louise Brooks was and you get a double whammy. It is my opinion that in her prime, there wasn't another woman alive as beautiful as Louise Brooks. Not even close. Well, maybe Olivia De Havilland
Yes! My question is how the lady ,who supposedly ,an alcoholic ,could looks so good?!!a And how she talks, she doesn't sound like 78 years old. Amazingly sharp and intelligent. Beautiful women inside and out!
If you like Louise I recommend Louise Brooks by Barry Paris and of course Lulu in Hollywood by the lady herself. Barry's book was incredible, he left no stone unturned when it came to her. Her films are not so easy to find. I recommend Grapevine Video, TCM and Warner. She was a very intelligent woman who only played by her own rules- she cared for no opinion, but her own which led her to unfortunate circumstances later on.
***** Thank you. Louise was a complicated women on many levels. Due to her small body of work she is mostly forgotten. She didn't have the storied career of say Clara Bow, but, Louise made her mark however small. I have four of her movies on DVD and have seen six, read two books on her, so I am still learning about her.
Louise Brooks and Ava Gardner. Louise actually saw Ava as one of her cinematic heroes when she received a television from Roddy McDowell in the 60's. Why those two women aren't bigger icons than Monroe and Hepburn is beyond me.
Yet she had a rather satisfying ending since I believe Kenneth Tynan, the British theatre critic sought her whereabouts much later in her life and they married. Its serendipitous.
I must say that she looks amazingly well for her 78 without the special makeup and all....wearing just a casual housecoat and not even bothering herself to go to the hairdressers ;) and it's striking how well she looks without all that - I wonder if she ever had a plastic surgery - I do not think so....
Pressgangers, there is a Web interview with the elder Betty Page. But as at that age she forbade being photographed full on frontally (to preserve her past image), one just hears her older voice, and from the side sees her older arms.
the ending really won me over, louise says "they didn't want to pay too much because actors would get their artistic freedom". paraphrasing... and here we are 100 years later with the same problem, greedy capitalists cornering markets and bending people to their will, stripping talent of their social mobility. it's even worse now, 50% of this generation will not do better than their parents. two generations ago it was 90% of americans who could expect to live better than their parents. our standard of living is declining as the super wealthy literally tripled their income in the last 10 years.
@cynthiacher You think Louise Brooks was plump? In fact, it was all muscle. She was a professional dancer. (I think she looked like a FEMALE...not a 12-year-old, anorexic boy, like the women in movies these days.)
wilburbonzo . The Building looks Familiar , Ricky might be right ? Last summer at Holy Sepulchre I found 6 of 8 people that I was Looking for . I am not certain it is Her One of the dates were off . Louise Brooks 1906 T 1985 is what my Photo shows . The T is a Cross between the Dates . I also had the Name Mary Louise Brooks written on a scrap of paper from Searches that Month . I am not certain that it is The right Grave yet ?
"I don't meet any brilliant people anymore..." That's because there aren't anymore brilliant people in this world...not truly brilliant. They're all phonies with big mouths and very little to say and quite boring because all they talk about is themselves and how much money they have or who they know who is powerful. They play at intellectualism but it's all a joke and they take advantage of ignorant people who buy into their shallow words. Louise Brooks did not suffer fools lightly. She was a sponge and if there wasn't anything to "absorb"...she left. I can see this woman being very alone now since most people would bore her to death if she were alive today.
+J kK I am the same way. I am reclusive myself. Most people today are VERY uninteresting, and ignorant, crude with little interest outside of themselves. they have little to add to my inner world. all I can 'absorb' from most is ego and negativity. leaving me feeling low and anxious. if by chance I meet people that are interesting. I feel uplifted. most leave me flat and drained.
I do agree with cynthiacher. When the nude pics of her were taken she was in awesome shape but she spent a lot of time on the piss in Germany and it showed in Diary of a Lost Girl. She slimmed in her later US films.
Examples of the cameras Leni Riefenstahl had for 'Triumph of the Will': 4:34 - Remote control camera going down between the Nazi banners. 4:47 - View from the remote control camera. The beginning of modern propaganda.
What a fantastically gorgeous, charismatic lady she was. She also had a sweet voice that seemed to burble with joyful memory.

I just said that very thing. Honest Lulu was certainly telling us exactly how things stood as she was want to do.
I saw this documentary years ago and that's when I fell in love with Louise Brooks. No one compares to her!

Missed this interview when it was originally shown. Louise was a wonderful, Beautiful, actress Rip. Thanks for posting.......
I love the line: "I don't meet any brilliant people anymore...." How sad and what a testimony to our dumbed-down culture.
I think it has less to do with the “dumbed down” culture and more to do with Louise partially withdrawing herself from society.

wow.....what a treasure to have an interview of the great lulu

Thanks for posting this quality rare interview with the inimitable Louise Brooks.

There was a fantastic piece about her, including interviews, in The New Yorker magazine many years ago. Worth reading!
Thank you for the interview. It was fascinating. Must buy her autobiography.
Fearlessly honest. What a beautiful woman.
Wonderful wonderful wonderful!! This is fine lady!! I love Miss Brooks!!
A very intelligent, fascinating lady.
Brooksie, I loved you then and I love you now, flaws & all I do not care. Come back
We all have flaws. A woman knows a woman. But if you are claiming to be an authority on that what can I say?
Thank you very much! It's a marvelous thing, the internet. And Louise Brooks, of course.
Louise Brooks and Ava Gardner. Louise actually saw Ava as one of her cinematic heroes when she received a television from Roddy McDowell in the 60's. Why those two women aren't bigger icons than Monroe and Hepburn is beyond me.

How can she still be so beautiful at that age?
Her beauty came from within. She never lost it.
She's certainly still very easy on the eye!
So Louise Brooks can sing too! Will wonders never cease.
that was dubbed

Unquestionablly still a beautiful woman.
Louise what a shame I never had the opportunity to meet you..
Incredible lady ..captivating..

No trickle down of profits since 1980- thanks to President Reagan
@@daniellinehan63 "profits over people", "party over country"... reganomics amiright?

So Hollywood is founded on the idea of wealthy men owning beautiful actresses. What a great documentary. RIP Lulu
What a woman, what a life!
Incomparable. No one matches her beauty yet.
I hope Louise was paid well for this documentary
Brilliant women , at any age
Does anyone know Brook's exact address in Rochester, I know she had a small flat on Goodman Street but I'd like to see the building
+wilburbonzo she lived at 7 North Goodman Street. google map it and you can see it via street view.
+Ricky Butler thanks, I used to go down to Rochester for the Toronto Film Society's annual august screening of silents and early talkies

hepburn is nothing, monroe is nothing compared to dear louise
hahahaha at 2:33
Louise Brooks is SAG-AFTRA actress Liv Alexander's grandmother. And I am the son of Nimrod Alexander who financed ALL THAT JAZZ -- Vic Alexander
