Jazz @ The Center: What's Going On Up There? with Pete Malinverni / Episode 1 Melody

PAC-TV presents "What's Going On Up There?" - a new series of sessions that gives you an insider's look behind the curtain of a Jazz performance. Featuring Pete Malinverni, Chair of Jazz Studies at Purchase College, SUNY, and co-curator of Jazz at The Center.
Many Jazz fans have enjoyed the spirit, rhythms, and free-flowing nature of the music, but not all know as much about the understanding and language by which the musicians communicate with each other. After all, Jazz musicians are called to be performers and composers at the same time, so there have to be some organizing principles at work.
How do the players/singers know what to do, and when? What parts of a Jazz performance are set in stone, and what is a surprise in each performance? How does everyone know when someone's solo is over? How does everyone end a piece together?
These and other questions will be explored in this series, which will look at Jazz performance practice through the lens of the five musical elements: Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Texture, and Form. Music, like all art, is at its best when it's used to express and evoke human emotion, and each musical element offers its own techniques by which to get to the flesh, blood and soul of the listener.
Today we bring you the first session, Melody. Melody is the musical element most related to the heart. No one ever got misty-eyed with nostalgia when hearing a familiar chord progression or rhythm; it's the melody, its patterns, leaps, stops and starts, that tells the emotional tale.
