    I just watched this video. I'm left with only one simple question: What's a FLOP?

    • @LordElfa
      @LordElfa 8 лет назад +9

      A floating point unit. A floating point is an equation like 5x5 and a floating point unit is the equation plus solution or 5x5=25. So if your computer can do 10 Teraflops then it can do 10 trillion basic math equations per second.

      Roy Green Floating-point is just a way of writing numbers in binary scientific notation. So, a Floating-point Operation Per Second is indeed one computer calculation per second.

    Both FLOP and FLOPS are perfectly acceptable. THe term arose from 'floating point operation per second' but isn't direclty tied to it anymore.

  • @dannyhengel7645
    @dannyhengel7645 8 лет назад +2

    so the sum number of flops do not equate how good a machine will operate? that means that if the xbox or the playstation video game console tries to claim certain number of flops, that doesn't mean it will operate better? confirm? deny?

    • @tonybologna6484
      @tonybologna6484 8 лет назад +1

      Having more flops does not necessarily mean better performance, as flops are more advantageous calculating hundreds of equations a second. Sure let's say we have 6 Tflops on a machine or more but very unlikely that it'll be used for applications.

    • @LordElfa
      @LordElfa 8 лет назад +1

      Think FLOPS as equivalent to Horsepower in cars. It's a great measure of theoretical power but so many factors decide how that power is usable and to what degree. A 1000 HP vehicle geared for speed can go fast but the same geared for power would be slow but capable of hauling more. Take into consideration the weight of the vehicle, roads you're using and so on you start to see the limitations where software and application are concerned.

    I tried a couple of web pages including wiki to find out what a FLOP is and it's not until 3:05 in this video when they talk about EXOFLOP's that it's actually explained what a FLOP is in plain english.

    What they are not saying is that our current model for supercomputing is only good for large scale parallel small repetitive calculations. For complex serial calculations we need a different model. We also need a way of intuitive thinking, or AI.
    We are still in the stone age of computing.

      lol ungrateful people... you are using science to ask why you need it. There are so many reasons you need science for. One of the primary is International Relations and World Peace. After that is Globalization. And there are a lot more reasons you need Science for. You cannot just rest it all on god and be like "OK".

    • @nirvanaurantian6834
      @nirvanaurantian6834 6 лет назад

      We do not need science. The term science comes from the Latin word scientia, meaning “knowledge”. It can be defined as a systematic attempt to discover, by means of observation and reasoning, particular facts about the world, and to establish laws connecting facts with one another and, in some cases, to make it possible to predict future occurrences. Me I like to discover the mystery. What is this number one of things, I cannot understand one as reality. .
