Democrats would only require a handful of republicans to pass the debt ceiling. If they get McCarthy to agree they will have enough votes. The only issue is that the mega republicans can always threaten to remove McCarthy from his position as speaker. So he listens to them.

To present this as a both sides issue is nonsense. There’s a clear right and wrong here. It’s wrong not to raise the debt limit and pay what’s due. The budget should be an entirely separate debate. For Baker and Buck to argue who looks better politically is off the rails..

Why is it a misnomer? Kinda makes a lotta sense to me.
In your car example, you have a bill for a car that is going unpaid (a debt) and you can only legally incur a certain amount (a limit or ceiling) of such unpaid bills. You then have a debt limit/ceiling - if you incur any more debt in excess of this limit, you get punished.

That means 10 years of NOT bailing out banks and failed corporations, and holding their multi-million CEO's accountable for their conduct. All of these individuals must work, go to college or get a trade. It worked for us and our children and will work for them. Instead of food stamps , churches can own their own restaurants and child care facilities. They also can have their own elderly care businesses, therefore, keeping the elderly in their homes, with hand up investment incentives. It is time to stop allowing this idleness in America, by establishing mom and pops, along with home based businesses.

I'm honestly shocked that all three men are even still alive.

Imagine having an irresponsible teenager with their first Credit card - and they overspend their limit, but instead of making them be accountable by making them keep within their budget and paying off their debts - you just raise their spending limit time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time after time ...until the entire nation is spent into the ground.

Far too simplistic Peter, it's more like two roomates agree to a budget. Then, after 6 months, they've spent the budget plus 10%, because both roomates wanted a dishwasher ... so now they have to re-decide, do we pay off that increased debt that we both agreed on, or do we default. That's it in a nutshell.
If you want to take it a bit further, and make it American, the Dems had a good budget, which included gets N dollars from the wealthy, and it is balanced. Then the Rump, with maga Reps, cut the yearly income by awarding mega-cuts to the wealthy classes who didn't need it. Oh oh, there goes the balanced budget. So Kevin comes along, and says, why take those tax dollars back off of the ultra wealthy, when we can cut social programs and old age programs to the poor and working classes ... there, I balanced the buget again. (I hope you're paying attention Peter.)

How many Americans buy a new house for cash? How many go into hock for 30-35 years and pay much higher interest rates than the US gov't has been paying, on the hopes, no guarantee, mind you, that they will have a job that allows them to keep paying off the house for those 30-35 years? Is that not irresponsible? And then, horrors! They buy a new car on credit too. And then! More horrors! A medical emergency comes up and they have to pay that medical bill off in bits and pieces or sell the house. What would happen to the economy if American families didn't do exactly what the government does?
You apparently think the credit card limit is something that comes from God. Why should a company that doesn't actually know the credit card applicant be allowed to let its computer determine anyone's credit limit, a limit set to ensure the company will prosper? But if you give the lender the right to do that, then for the decades that the right wing has claimed to be deficit hawks (only while Dems are in the White House or control Congress), you must give the lenders the right to determine the government's debt limit, not the Congress. At the point at which the rest of the world ceases to rush to buy US debt but is reluctant without continued increases in the interest rate (which still implies that they trust the US gov't to live up to the contract it agreed to with the lender) to acquire it, you will have an argument.
If Republicans do not allow the debt ceiling to increase, we will see interest rates on gov't debt skyrocket and Republicans will blame Biden and Democrats (as they always do) for a problem the Republicans created, in large part with the $8,000,000,000,000 in national debt they agreed to while Trump was president and the trillions Dubya ran up for his unnecessary war and tax cuts, neither of which produced the desired outcome. Anyone see trillions coming into the US Treasury from Iraqi oil, as we were promised?
Your comment starts with the loaded word _irresponsible_ , which you do not define in terms of the US gov't because that would require you to list the "irresponsible" expenditures that benefit the American people and "irresponsible" tax cuts that benefit the few, who already have so much money that they waste it on yachts and yet another penthouse. Exactly what are those "irresponsible" purchases the US government has made? A $3,000,000,000 aircraft carrier? Well, list that, and see how far you get with a Republican House to cut that.
Your premise is that money is the most important thing in the world, the most important possession a person or a nation can have. Why do you accept that premise?

    • @peterlongprong7521

@@gnirolnamlerf593 no - money means nothing without responsible character - and a Government is nothing if it doesn't put the well-being of its own citizens first. this nation is broken beyond repair.
