I really love your channel. I work from home and i have anxiety about work often, and your videos really help calm me down to be productive. Thank you for not adding sound effects, music, or loud intros. It's rare to have interesting, well-presented content like this on RUclips in 2024.

Thank you so much for that comment! I too suffer from anxiety so I know what it’s like to have something there to help calm things down. I’m glad that my videos are there to help. Cheers!

They're neat, simple and direct. No fancy steelbooks, slipcovers, etc. It's very charming.

I think there is a difference between "slow" and "boring": A movie can be slow, but there can be a lot of information being presented, whereas a boring film doesn't move along with any new info to impart.

    • @vlogsbyalejandro
      @vlogsbyalejandro 4 месяца назад +1

This correct. There's also the idea that if it does move slow without presenting any new information, then there should definitely be a good reason as to why you do that. If you don't have a good reason to move it slowly, then don't do it.
There's a few scenes in Manchester By The Sea where it can seem to move slow, but it's with purpose. Same with There Will Be Blood and Moonlight.

The Warner Archive Collection is my favorite Blu-Ray 'label'/collection/series. Reliably releasing no-frills quality releases of classics. It's nice to see you giving them some well deserved attention.

Warner Archive is the unsung hero of blu ray transfers/restorations. They put a lot of time into them.

Warner Archive Collection proves that the quality of the scan, mastering, and encoding is more important than format. I have WAC discs in my collection that rival UHD and some that even surpass UHD, particularly in the golden age of cinema. I have some WAC discs that look more faithfully cinematic than Warner Home Video UHDs that tend to be a bit aggressive on HDR grades and have inferior encoding.

Friendly Persuasion is one of Gary Cooper's greatest performances and a fantastic Wyler film! Thanks for highlighting it. I agree, it deserves reappraisal nowadays.

You are so right. The Nun's Story is one of the great character studies in movies with arguably Audrey's best performance. I have it near the top of my list for 1959 and 1959 was full of masterpieces. Great overview of Warner Archive. This gives me a new appreciation for it.

Absolutely love what you said about The Nun's Story, I completely agree with you about the way a film is so much stronger when the filmmakers don't force an agenda on their characters and just offer it as matter of fact - part of why I think Poor Things was so strong, atleast for me I never felt like I was being preached to, it just was what it was and I could make my own judgements of it.

Their transfer of Hey There, It's Yogi Bear! is stunning. Maybe because that was a feature over TV, but it just seemed to really pop more than some of the other animated releases.

I already bought The Nun's Story Blu-ray and love the film. I read the book, and when the movie was first released, I saw it in Radio City Music Hall, along with a performance of the Rockettes (all for $5, if I recall correctly).

The Mask of Fu Manchu (yeah, I know it’s extremely inappropriate as far as racial stereotypes go, but they’re clearly having so much fun, and Karloff is just chewing the scenery from the moment you see him) is one of my absolute favorites. I already have it as part of the Hollywood Legends of Horror collection, and it looks pretty good, but as soon as you mentioned that they’ve released this new version, I instantly ordered it. It should arrive today. I’m usually buried deep in RUclips playlists in the evening lately, but tonight I might just make an exception to watch it. Thanks…

Picked up the newly released Ivanhoe - of its time but still a much better film than it's generally credited with. The colours brought to life by the restoration are astounding - I recommend it to everyone on that basis alone. The jousting scenes are like watching a gallery of oil paintings, it's magnificent.

Great releases from Warner Archive for the summer. I'd mention that YOU"RE A BIG BOY NOW has the advantage of a great score by John Sebastian and The Lovin' Spoonful. The same thing applies to THE NUN'S STORY, which contains one of Franz Waxman's best, and highly sought-after scores. It's based on an excellent book by Kathryn Hume, based on a real nun, which Zinnemann and scenarist Robert Anderson adapted with great skill. I've always liked FRIENDLY PERSUASION since I was a kid as well, but now I'm getting a laugh from its tagline today: "It will pleasure you in a hundred ways!". Oh those Quakers! I'm looking forward to seeing Le Carre's THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL again after many years. I've always given it and Keaton more credit than most so I'm anxious to revisit it.

I too adore Warner Archive very underrated and my humble collection has a bit of everything the blu-rays are great the only WA DVDs I have unfortunately are manufacture on demand discs and that’s always off putting to a point I understand just not a fan. Audrey Hepburn is my favorite The Nun’s Story never appealed to me when I was younger but a Warner Archive is almost a must buy. Not against a scooby doo film I just can’t get passed the double feature again I see the reason for it just not for me. Great video more people need Warner Archive.

I remember trying to buy from them direct from Warner Archive in the U.S about 4 years ago and they said they wouldn't ship to England because of rights' issues -even though they have the rights, especially true with no region coding. There were also quite arsey when I tried to explain how odd this was. They have great titles but, again, (yawn) rights issues of your own films restricting them to U.K buyers is just so narrow-minded. At least they recently released 'Some Come Running' (1958) on their Archive collection for U.K buyers. A great film.

I received The Nun's Story and The Rain People today. Unfortunately, I found the video encoding on both discs to be uncharacteristically awful. It's so bad and full of macroblocking and encoding artifacts that I don't think I can watch these movies without being distracted by it. What has happened to WAC and their usual high standards?

I have friendly persuasion and nuns story on blu ray and am not seeing all the macrobocking you are reporting. Of course i live in an over hundred year house with very small rooms. I have 3 77" lg oled tvs and will never be able to go any bigger or go projection. Im not sure what the movies would look like on a 120 inch projection but they look wonderful on my tvs in 20 foot by 15 foot rooms.

You have excellent taste. I have on order coming tomorrow all six of the "Thin Man" movies on Blu ray from Warner Archive. I prefer pressed discs and I believe these are all MOD (burned) ones. But I am so happy to get these six movies on Blu Ray. Was going to buy the DVD box set years back. But now look forward to them on Blu ray. Keep up the good work on your channel. Very much appreciated.

Love Warner's Archive, I've got a fair few in the collection also (including much animation). I certainly would like to pick up Devils Doorway and Mask of Fu Manchu. Maybe tur Hepburn Nun film as I do like Audrey and am curious about that film. Colt 45 could be interesting so might wish list that one. Don't know about that Scooby stuff as it's later Scooby but I'm a bit older and prefer the original Scooby stuff than the later stuff but it's great they are putting it out for those who grew up with it to enjoy. Wasn't there some talk WA was shutting down some years back? I guess that didn't end up eventuating thankfully.
