Anyone know why in a considerable number of Latino countries this was preserved but not in US and maybe Canada?

I can’t speak for Canada but in the US we were forced to assimilate. Once brought over, Europeans made us change our names, religion, straighten our hair, etc. Many Black people were killed for practicing traditional African culture. We had to be what Europeans wanted

@@thelovewitch6552 Many of those things you mentioned if not all also happened in Latin America. The traditional names you hear are European, the religion European, the language European, people were killed and tortured if not converted. This is why I was curious what the difference was.

David R Yeah, I should’ve clarified more. In the US we didn’t get that many waves of Africans. The US actually got the least amount of slaves in comparison to Latin countries, such as Brazil and the Dominican Republic. Here, they erased who you were and stopped bringing in people from Africa and eventually ,only, Black people born and raised here were left. Also, we ,heavily, blended our culture with theirs ,for whatever reason, and formed a new one which is why our English is different than theirs. So if you observe us, many of our traditions are similar to African traditions but very Americanized. We were also promised freedom if we converted to their way of life so many of us moved and never looked back. It is interesting though because it seems everyone who comes to the US lose their culture. I think the US push patriotism too much. Sorry for this long message, this is an interesting conversation that I never thought about . I’m only pushing theories here❤️

@@thelovewitch6552 I can see how a higher concentration would keep more of the original traditions. True about those who come to the US losing their culture especially the further away you get from the first generation Americans. I have seen that happen in other European countries also, maybe anywhere. Yea brother good conversation, in no way do I mean bad by it, just curiosity. I just had a conversation with a real good friend who reads a lot about history and it was interesting, always nice to have good conversation.

The tyrants were different. Although both tyrants were European, English and Spanish are culturally very different. African traditions were preserved almost intact because when slaves escaped the Spanish tyrant let them be as they could not defeat them when they tried to destroy the slaves settlements. The Spanish also allowed the slaves for a few days during a year to express their cultural traditions hence carnival. You should have a look to Barranquilla's carnival, one of the biggest in the world and full with African dances and cultural heritage. It is actually part of human heritage declared by UNESCO. Also check out the history of San Basilio de palenque one of the first towns of free slaves in the American continent.
