Ask a guitar fanatic what the number 9 2208 refers to, and they know right away, it’s Greeny. No other guitar has earned legendary status like this magical 1959 Les Paul Standard. The Gibson Custom Shop is proud to honor this legacy and bring this magic to more players with the global launch of the Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul Standard Made 2 Order featuring Indian rosewood and Murphy Lab aging.
A 1959 Les Paul Standard is one of the most coveted and valuable guitars ever, but one particular example, “Greeny,” is famous for both its incredible story and its iconic sound. Originally owned by Peter Green, Greeny was used throughout his time with Fleetwood Mac and started as a bright cherry red sunburst, but after countless shows, it faded to a pale-yellow color. Greeny’s distinctive sound is partially from the out-of-phase middle switch position due to the neck pickup’s reversed magnetic polarity. In the 1970s, Peter sold Greeny to Gary Moore, who used it for three decades with Thin Lizzy and as a solo artist, even recording an album titled “Blues for Greeny.” After years together, Greeny was sold and temporarily retired, left waiting for a chance to return to the stage.
Now owned by Kirk Hammett, Greeny has officially passed through the hands of three legendary guitarists. Now you can add your own chapter to the legend of Greeny.

They world is full of haters. I for one am glad a guitarist bought it and it’s being played on stage. Regardless how you feel about Kirk, his playing, or his style. He has been successful and the guitar continues to be played for the masses and not sitting in a safe somewhere being rubbed down by a diaper.
Standby for forum hating players negative comment 🍿
How many of these Greeny tributes will be made?
Yeah, more Kirk!!
@@sintya611 yeah me2
Gibson is so out of touch from real musicians, I hope the company folds in the next ten years.
Lawyers, dentists and investment bankers across the globe can now have a "Greeny" of their own.
Not the regular folk unfortunately 😢
It if makes you feel any better, none of those doctors or investment bankers will be lefties
that's who buys a Gibson, basically they are like the Harley Davidson of the guitar world, eventually those people stop playing, or die off, and Gibson will be left wondering who are they going to sell guitars too.
@@peejay6930 hahaha!
for $20K - I think you are right.
Kirk is one of my favorite musicians....but not because of his music alone. he has such a beautiful soul. he doesnt try to play the role of the hard ass; being his own true self is why i really admire him. what a giving, wonderful person he is!
yes, I can’t understand why he gets so much hate
Oh wow another 50's/60's Les Paul holy shit the innovation is unstoppable.
don't forget the aged case
@@yaniv-nos-tubes yea i Nearly did !! Mw
Gibson tried to innovate and bring some new things to the market, and people lost their f-ing minds. So now they can only do colors and runs, and stick to what sells.
@@georgeh.5480 exactly. Op thought he was being clever, dude has no clue.
The last time Gibson tried to appease the "modern player", they went bankrupt. 🤣
Gary Moores Blues Alive performance was the reason I wanted a trans amber 95 classic. Still have it 28 years later. If you haven’t seen that performance, it’s one of the greatest musical performances EVER!
i agree 100%, gary is the 1 guitarist were ive listened to his live and album stuff and just gone blank and went wow. he is the most outstanding musician ive ever heard. he makes that guitar sing like no other person can, i could watch his live versions for hours on end and still enjoying it like a kid in a candy shop.
One of the best live albums of all time.
This guitar will always be Peter Green's Greeny. That's why it's Greeny!
I can understand why Kirk loves that guitar but why anyone would spend $20k for a replica is beyond me
Agreed.
$20? CME is selling for $85k
Remember kids,,,,,today's deals ......are tomorrows bargain,,,....better than in any bank....limited edition,,,so..5-8 years from now it will bring more than interest..............notsorry😯
@@ranyericarvalhosantos2137 some folks just have a lot more money than sense.
That is a tall drink of water, but with original 59' Les Pauls fetching $500k or more, a very limited replica is probably a good deal. It's all based on what the market will bear. I have an original Collectors Choice Peter Green 59' Ser #6 and It's worth that much. It's a fantastic guitar.
"If people wanna play it, even complete strangers, sure, play it all you want"
Ok Kirk I want to play it. Forever please. For the rest of my days will do. Drop it off tonight, ok? Thanks.
🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅🤣
Gibson TV should do a The Collection with either James Hetfield or Kirk Hammett. Who agrees?
Not at all, they're fine with ESP. Gibson has way too many QC issues. It would be cool to have a James Hetfield explorer, but even back then he primarily used ESP.
Sure. US$50.000 guitars. Nice!
Gibson TV did a hour long show with Kirk, Kirk and James are ESP artists, lets not forget that ESP allows them to play whatever they want, and they still choose to play ESP over anything else. Kirk and James have been so loyal to ESP because ESP has been loyal to them.
Y’all are a bunch of a social weirdos thinking you know people lol. Get a life
@@georgeh.5480 Kirk is an ESP AND a Gibson Artist.
Honestly, Kirk can't hold a candle to Gary playing wise but it's awesome that this instrument didn't go to a collector who'd just lock it up. I saw this guitar live(with Kirk), amazing.
Gary is among the all time great players. He could hold his own with anyone. Watch him at the Fender 60th anniversary party playing Red House by Jimi.
I must see for "n" time the performance of "Fade To Black" in 2009, i'm pretty sure that Kirk plays "Fade" and "Nothing..." with this guitar.
Me, too, in 2019 not too long after he acquired it. Couldn't have gone to a better player.
@josemojicaperez4436 when I saw them last year, when he was playing the intro solo to Fade, he was right in front of me on stage!
Pretty sure he used it on a few other songs as well.
Nothing like a Gibson! Beautiful
Absolutely love this guitar, can't thank my wife enough for buying it for my 50th

Wonderful Birthday present. Enjoy it. 👍
Must be nice. That amount of money would buy $100 worth of groceries for someone for almost 4 years.
To me this Guitar is called " the Greeny " for a reason nobody produced sutch beautifull solos on it than Peter Green
Learn to spell.
Peter Green didn't like it.
So, you're saying Gary Moore never played a beautiful solo on it? I agree the new owner isn't in the same class but that's one sweeping generalisation in your comment.
It's called Greeny as PG was the original owner, nothing more.
@@sted123456789 Moore definitely did. But he still never had the tone Green did.
@@dubster82 The only reason he sold it was Gary moore wouldnt stop bugging him about it.
That's so awesome Kirk let's people play that guitar.
Gibson, y'all did such an immaculate job on my 2018 Standard that I no longer covet any other guitar on the face of this planet. Not Greeny, Pearly Gates, Pagey's #1 & #2... no other guitar could match or replace the instrument y'all made for me.
It's been a 30 year dream for me since first seeing Slash wield it on MTV or seeing mom's Frampton Comes Alive record up to now when I can reach in the case and pull out the guitar I had manifested over so many years. I can't thank y'all enough. ❤

I’ve got a 2022 Standard and it’s my forever guitar. Only thing I did was replace the pickups with Dimarzio Super Distortions, and now it’s perfect!
The great thing about Kirk is he is genuinely a custodian of everything that guitar means to people.
The only bad thing is that he has not evolved in 30 years regardless of how much he cares about guitars.
Yet he carved his fucking initials into the back of it. He's a tool.
HARVESTER OF SORROW!!!! 🤘🎸🤘🎸😎😎 what a sexy looking guitar!! 🤘🎸🤘🎸

Rory Gallagher is underrated as hell 👀🤌🏼
You're joking right?
@@PaulMcCaffreyfmac no lol, Rory Gallagher is one of the most underrated players of all time.
I hope I run into Kirk one day because I just have to play that guitar man. Wow.
Personally i dont really like greeny getting called kirks guitar ( no hate against kirk) since if you look at its legacy , with gary moore (imo the best guitarist of all time). gary made that guitar sing like no other instrument or guitarist can, gary had the most outstanding solos, the greatest melodies and songs ive heard. John norum once said "when you listen to gary it makes you feel someting, someting like no other guitarist can" and i think that summs up how great gary was. and before gary there were peter green in the early stages of fleetwood mac.
Absolutely agree mate
I was going to buy one but I don't like Green, Moore, Hammett stencilled on the case 😂
At least it is being played. I find it sickening that David Gilmour's black strat is sitting on Jim Irsay's mantle, so, again, at least Greenie is being played...
Perfeito amigão disse tudo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@NigelTufnel612 100% i agree but i dont think that its being represented in the best way possible, i think that it should have gone to either jack moore, or if you look at billy Merziotis he is i think the best at playing like gary. but i agree 100% that its better beeing played than standing in a room some where.
I think the Staff at Gibson that day when he showed up to shoot this Ad, shared some cocktails with Kurt..
I've heard Kirk talk about this guitar at length in previous interviews. I never heard him mention that he'd noticed the guitar as a kid and thought about wanting it. That's gotta be awesome to finally own something like that. Be like me owning one of Hetfield's Ken Lawrence explorers. The one he used in the late 90s early 2000s specifically is my dream guitar.
It was Gary Moore and the sound of that guitar to make me want to learn to play guitar
Kirk is such a nice guy. Greenie remains in good hands... This guitar sounded great playing blues (Gary Moore and BB playing "thrill..."). Now in Metallica it sounds MASSIVE.
its the absolutely worst guy to play this legendary guitar, but it is what it is.
it was cool with GM &BB I've watched it a shit load of times 👍

Man that song (and album) is incredible
I had a honey burst traditional , I absolutely loved it . Can’t wait to get a Les Paul again . Heavy body 50s neck .
The best sample does not have a heavy body.
I had a 2018 60s standard unburst it sounded and played great but it weighed too much. Would love to get another 60s but this time under 9.5 lbs.
Harvester of sorrow wasn't recorded with that guitar !!! :-)
Vintage Guitar makes a real good greeny les Paul replica with Wilkinson out of phase pickups at a fraction of the Gibson custom shop cost.
They should do a epiphone version of this guitar so we all can get in on the great sound Greeny" 1959 Les Paul has
I’m sure they will as they did with the Adam Jones silverbursts. Will prob be $1300 if I had to guess.
They will never do that. They don't want poor people to have access to a "Greenie."
and better build quality lol
Epiphone version only $8,999
The Epiphone of tomorrow will have a premium line and a special artist editions line.
While Gibson USA continues to price simple guitars into the stratosphere, becoming the icon brand.
Awesome it's in the right hands.. that's one of those individual things that belong to an artist of the trade.. it has truly found where it blongs....
I am happy that he will be the only one guy able to buy it lol with this crazy price so happy for him and maybe the future 10 buyers
Confused with your comment. The greeny he has was bought from Gary was almost 2 million. However, yes 20k for this shit nah. I can make one myself cheaper.
the legacy of this guitar will last forever. Gibson killed it with this and beyond. this is why Gibson will forever be my favorite.
Such an awesome guitar
The most epic Les Paul ever imo.
That would be Page’s #1 in my opinion
Limited run - they will cost a small fortune. I met Peter back in '69 and i held and strummed 'greeny' , it wasn't the faded lemon colour it has morphed into but a nice sunburst red colour. 🎸😎
Awesome!
Badass! Kirk 🫵😉👊😁❤️
This guitar has just transitioned to another level. lets be real if some dude that was looking to stick it in a museum we'd all be gutted. Great to see it go to another guitar player...
20k.. great, I thought it might be expensive! Let's all get the greeny sound now
Man Kirk LOVES that guitar. There's def some magick going on in that thing.
Of all the guitar players to be next to have Greeny ...he's not on my list. Bonamassa would do this guitar justice or another Top Blues/Rock guitarist
@@michaelcantinieri7890 I actually like that he has it as opposed to a rock/blues great. Being in the world's biggest metal band gives the guitar better exposure to people who otherwise wouldn't even know about it's existence.
At 20k! I love Gibson and own many... but these prices are crazy.
I wanna Play Greenie a little Kirk when your in the Detroit area.
Gibson could come with a regular USA Greeny model and and Epiphone one afterwards, where the pickups and neck shape are modeled after the original, but no relic and no 20K price tag, so that normal people can actuallt acquire one.
There's an "of the rack" version coming. Based on some inside knowledge I'm guessing retail will be USD 5-6K.
The guys with the 50k versions gonna be real upset now.
What great philosophy and appreciation still after so many years. One of the living legends he is...
It's a pity you don't get the Green, More, Hammett case with it😕

I'm just about the pickups. I have Les Pauls that I'm in love with body-wise, but I definitely would love to upgrade with a set of those!
You can flip the magnet in the neck pickup yourself if your confident enough to disassemble the pickup and turn the magnet round. I did it on my Les Paul and it sounds just like 'greeny's' tone. You can watch me playing my 'Good bye Greeny - Tribute To Peter Green @ utube Alfie Henshall. 🎸😎
Get some Bare Knuckle hand wound ones, I did for my standard and transformed it
I’m digging that Gibson is going full throttle into their heritage and lore and doing their best to give enthusiasts what they want while being unfettered by the naysayers. The expensive reissues aren’t the only ones they’ll make. Imagine Ford etc putting out an actual 68 fastback or Hoonicorn for that matter. Dodge has that wheels-up drag pack from the factory too. That’s essentially what Gibson are doing here. A great time to be alive I say 👏👏
Saw Peter Green play that guitar with Fleetwood Mac on Black Friday 1969 at the Boston Tea Party., Boston Mass.

Shortest straw has been pulled for you.....🎵🎵
I hope that guitar goes to another great musician once Kirk passes on
When KH passes on in another 25 years or so, Bonamassa will snag it, adding it to his horde of ‘bursts that will by that time amount to 92% of all of them ever made.
