My sisters and I grew up in Arvada and every weekend we would go to either Lakeside or Elitches. Elitch gardens was more upscale than Lakeside, but they were both so much fun. Thanks for bringing back the teenage memories 🦋🦋🦋
Well, I have now binge watched the "Colorado Experience" as posted on Rocky Mountain PBS. Absolutely wonderful. I went to Colorado for the first time when I was 11. I returned as an adult. I lived and worked there until September 30, 2001. There's something so special and unique about Colorado. As is mentioned many times in this series. This series manages to capture and define not only what's unique about Colorado, but also shows what makes PBS great. I've been trying to move back to Denver for nearly 10 years. This made me feel like I was there again in so many ways. Thank you for your efforts and this great series. Thanks to all the historians and participants for their contributions. Marvelous job!
I grew up in old Wheat Ridge, 35th Avenue and Pierce. We were bike riding distance to both Elitches and Lakeside. Summer nights on the weekends, we could hear the short track racers and stock cars at Lakeside Speedway. Our church youth group would reserve picnic tables for an afternoon at Elitches...fun times. One of my favorite memories was going to the Trocadero Ballroom with my parents to hear concerts by the "Nine Greats of Jazz." Folks like Ralph Sutton, Clancy Hays, Bud Freeman, Bob Haggart, Peanuts Hucko, Yank Lawson, Morey Feld, Cutty Cutshall & Lou McGarity. In the late '50's to the mid '60's, the Gurtler family made it a point to open the park to graduating high school seniors one night in early June....I wonder how many relationships were strengthened, or broken that night! I know my girl and I had a grand time.
Lakeside was my first job at age 15. I lied and said I was 16. First ride I operated was the kiddieland coaster, then it was off to the big rides, the tumbler, the funhouse rotating barrels, the wild chipmunk and eventually the big roller coaster. For a kid, that was a awesome first job to have. What's funny is when you are the operator of the merry go round that music is literally Stuck in your brain and can't be removed but I didn't mind. That was so much fun. After work friends and I would go thru the glass maze in the dark after the lights were off. Plus, my older brother worked at Elitch Gardens. I was a roller coaster fanatic. I hope to move back to Colorado soon. Great presentations from the Colorado experience series.I worked at Lakeside in 1971,1972. Plus, from my grandfathers house we could watch the 4th of July fireworks display. Great memories. Also, my grandfather worked at Lakeside.
I myself got to work at Lakeside back in the 1990's and loved every bit of it!! Got to work with the owners too!! What a blast that was; great memories to share with everyone
I now live about 10 miles from Santa's Workshop. My favorite ride there as a kid, the go carts on a single monorail. They looked like old Ford model A's or T's.
I remember working at Elitch's in 1973. It was a fun summer job. I was paid $1.25 per hour, worked 12 to 14 hour days. Didn't get rich, but enjoyed the atmosphere. I remember one day when the Hells Angels arrived. All gates were immediately shut ! Quite funny.
Reminded me of William's Grove (no longer operating) outside of Mechanicsburg, PA and Knoeble's Grove (still in operation) outside of Elysburg, PA. This was fun to watch. "History that deserves to be remembered".
I need to catch up with the happenings in my home state and city. . .we grew up spending our summers going to Eliches and Lakeside. Because my Dad worked for the government, he was given free tickets during the summer and we always made sure to take the cousins. My parents would go sit in the gardens and let we kids go ride the rides. My cousin, sister and I would ride the rollercoasters and make a bet on who would throw up first. . .I can proudly say, I won most all of those bets !! Ah memories !!
I miss the Original and Elitch Gardens. The new Elitch Gardens Amusement Park is awesome as well. Santa's Workshop is like walking into what one would imagine the North Pole would be. So much fun for everyone from 1 to 100. Lakeside Amusement Park needs a MAJOR restoration. I stopped taking my Children they're in the early 1990's, today I wouldn't take my family or Grandchildren there if someone paid me to, I don't trust the safety of the rides, as well it's structures are very old and dilapidated not to mention trashy. Although it's cheaper than Elitche's there is no comparison between the two. I'll be surprised if it's still operating in 5 years.
What about heritage square? I almost drowned at Santa's workshop place when I was a little boy. I don't remember it but that's what my family tells me.
Krasner family, please, PLEASE, put some money into Lakeside. We can do it as a community, Friends of Lakeside or something. Or a historic designation. It's looking ROUGH. We dont want to see it crumble into nothing.

Yeap, so many good memories from there. Thank you very much.
I love going to lake side
I spent my childhood at these places I remember how fun it was. I miss Colorado now that I live in South Carolina. Born and raised in Colorado.
Thoroughly enjoyed the ride down memory lane. I've been to all of them many times and always had a great time!

Makes me sad they didn’t talk about Heritage Square.
Yes, that was a very neat place. My kids went on pony rides there

Elitch's should have never moved from their original location!

What source do you have for the recreation of the Monitor and Merrimack battle? I'm looking all over and can't find any articles or sources on that.

Elitch is going to be moving again
Yeah, more condos. Yay...
North Pole is better than Disneyland for little children and grandparents. All the amusements little ones enjoy for much less $$, and no crazy lines!
