Hey Jesse, thanks for reacting to my request. Keep in mind that this song was written for the Barbie Movie, so its meaning can also have something to do with Barbie's self reflection on what was she made for? Knowing that she isn't real. Actually, it's kind of deep if you think about it.

Its a song with a deep meaning that mori would never be able to write herself ,BE is a songwriter herself, and you call that boring? All mori does here is cover a beautifully written song by BE.

Mori can relate to the song ,cuz she experienced the same thing as the songwriter, She sometime think about quitting her singing career, and sometimes she doesn't have the passion to sing with, and just sing "for the hack of it" as she said in her vid,
And thats why the song is important for her as well ,does that mean Mori is self obsessed? Turning away from her father to get a husband? Wouldn't you call that self obsessed? No cuz you're idolizing her too much you feel the need to bash othe artists that mori highly respected.
So don't try to put down other artist when you praise Our mori ,She ain't a "Trophy" that you can raise above others,She don't need that.

She just doesn’t capture the soft soul that comes through in Billie’s version. Billie and her brother wrote this while watching the movie, so she had a little advantage in her understanding of what the song was all about.

For sure it’s a beautiful cover, but when I hear this version I feel more like the artist says to me “look how cool I am, I can do this and that stuff with my voice”, as if it’s some sort of an entrance exam for some vocal academy lol. But Billie, while performing this song, doesn’t try to prove us something, she says “FEEL me”, so it feels much more deeper than just technically perfect performing. Btw, there’s video on RUclips where Billie explains why she’s chosen THAT way of performing
Or..The song really resonated with her? Maybe the fact that you felt like it was a show off moment tells a lot, It was just her feeling the Lyrics of a beautifully written piece, (Billie is a Master at that). Maybe it was a real "moment" for her? She is and has been struggling with some deep issues for years now, and maybe, just maybe it was totally authentic.
To discount ones emotion during a performance like that means only ignorance, Im only saying this because you are clearly a Billie fan, and know very little about Morissette ( I presume).
Not to say you are an ignorant person by any means, Just maybe about things that
most would not know about how life has been for her for years.
Billie wrote this about a cartoon character, Morissette sang it as a Anthem and so did Billie, its much deeper than the surface we scratch here, for sure.
If it was some sort of an entrance Exam for a Vocal Academy and I didn't know what
it was about, I would have passed her with flying colors.
She wasn't trying to "prove anything" to anybody here, that I can assure you, If she was it would have been MUCH different.
This was a beautifully written piece that was delivered from a vulnerable heart.

@@yoojin3877 Thanks, to me it wasn't so much about the "technicality" of the comment of vocals, but more about the passive aggressive nature and backhanded diminishing of the performance that set me off.
@@OOCFM I’m not Billies fan, I’m just okay with her songs (I listen metal and rock, actually 😎🤘), and since there were so much discussions about this song particularly, when Barbie movie came out, I got interested in the story of creation of this song, where Billie said (and showed) that she could sing it in many different ways with strong voice and so on, but it wouldn’t match the context. So I never said that Morissete performance is bad, it’s cool and technically it’s much stronger, than Billies. Have I enjoyed this performance? - totally yes. Has she touched my soul? - No. But it’s super subjective issue, and there’s no one right opinion, because everyone will be right here

The cover was a good attempt. I'm sure it could be improved with a few more performances under the belt. But I'm surprised your reaction did not mention the audio aspects. Billie's original feels like you're in someone's head hearing their existential thoughts. Whereas this cover in places feels like someone's screeching in your face.
Totally disagree, I feel Mori's version has more anguish and passion in her voice...absolutely beautiful....Billie Eilish wishes she could sing like this!

There's a reason why the original has billions of streams and this cover is barely audible: the aesthetics are completely mismatched.
The original is a quiet contemplation of a deeply felt crisis while the cover is an over the top rendition in a school production.
If it's not clear by now, all I'm saying is the techniques don't match the aesthetics of the song. I'm not faulting the skill or accent, which shows through in places.
Liked the song but hated the movie! The worst movie ever with the worst message full of division and hate and anti-family! The fact that is was lauded only goes to show how low values have been degraded!
